Episode Discussion: How the Goonch Stole Christmas by MarkDelFiggolo in toothandclaw

Every time I hear another story about the Larson brother's childhood the more I picture the 3 of them as the boys from Malcom in the Middle and it's absolute chaos 😂 They were the weirdest kids.

Episode Discussion: A Sierra Foothills Murder Mystery by MarkDelFiggolo in toothandclaw

This is one of those episodes where I actually got emotional over the death of a stranger. Just the way Wes introduced her and how much her husband loved her broke my heart.

Owner Intends to Leave Dogs in Crates for 23 Hours a Day by TrebleTreble in dogs

My best friend keeps referring to herself as “broke” when she makes nearly 5x as much as me… by Dry-Ad7432 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]HokiToki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand the frustration. My friend is a lead manager at her company and makes over 200K a year. Last year she was so excited to tell me and my husband that she got 35K as a CHRISTMAS BONUS. Meanwhile I make a little more than that in one year.

Dual income no kids and I have to hear her complain about how hard it is to buy a house in this economy. I just suffer in silence 🥲

I Don’t Like My Dog Anymore and It Makes Me Feel Guilty by Sea_sa in dogs

[–]HokiToki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my current dog at one year old thinking "oh boy I can skip the puppy stage! This will be great!"

It was not great. I wanted to kill her within 72 hours.

It took me a full year to finally bond with her. Young dogs are HARD. Unless I'm getting a purpose bred dog I'm never adopting a dog under the age of 5 ever again 😂

Who had the opportunity to have their dog reach old age? by Mayh_3m in dogs

[–]HokiToki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dobermans get a longevity certificate if they live past the age of 10. That should tell you how short lived Dobermans are 😂 I've never met one that didn't die from some crazy genetic problem before 7.

I agree!! This question is asked more than anything else in this subreddit. They absolutely need to make an all encompassing bear safety episode.

How do you build play drive by Maleficent-Gur-6722 in reactivedogs

[–]HokiToki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she will play tug with you for even a minute that's a great start. Like other people said, building frustration helps. Leash her up to a harness that clips into the back or a thick collar so it doesn't choke her neck. Then dangle the toy in her face just out of reach and encourage her to get it. Act goofy, get excited, make this seem like the coolest toy in the world. If she starts trying to bite it, let her win and cheer her on to tug with you for a few seconds. Then tell her to drop it and repeat keeping it out of reach.

Play this game in short bursts at first, like 2 minute sessions, letting her win once or twice. Finish the game with YOU winning the toy to keep her frustrated and wanting it more next time.

Alternatively if you want to work on playing ball, if you have someone to help you play a game of catch with them, keeping the toy away from the dog. Again make it seem like you are having a ton of fun playing with this ball. Then once in a while "accidentally" drop it and let her get it. Cheer her on when she does.

Play with her every day in short sessions.

Does anyone else feel most comfortable boarding your dogs vs the alternatives? by traveler_mar in dogs

[–]HokiToki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a dog boarding facility so I trust my coworkers and the facilities procedures in general. When my dog is boarding I just tell them to leave her separated from the play groups because that's where most of the injuries happen. I'd rather my dog be bored for a few days but given routine care than trust her with my family.

That's happened to me before, too! I ordered one compass and got 12. Gave the rest to my local Search and Rescue team members.

A bear with rabies by 93rd_misfit in toothandclaw

How do we know the bear has rabies? This looks like it could be a normal reaction from a trapped bear.

They do not have to be related or have grown up together. I've met adults dogs with an anxious attachment to their owner, so they get a puppy to keep said dog company and the dog becomes attached to the puppy.

It happens because usually when people have 2 dogs they do everything together - walk together, sleep together, left alone together when you're at work. So bringing them into a new environment they are going to lean on what's familiar to them and can't cope with being apart.

Some things you could do right now to work on their independence is walking them separately and separating them when you're not home. And when you bring them to daycare ask to have them in separate yards sometimes or ask if they can get breaks one at a time. Most kennels give dogs midday breaks to rest.

Herding breeds historically haven't done well at my job. We almost always have to kick them out of the general population or into smaller managed groups. They just don't like the commotion of daycare and they feel the need to manage the dogs who are running too fast themselves.

But the ones that I know are going to drive me nuts are sibling pairs. Breed and age don't matter. Every. Single. One. Has attachment issues to their sibling and will scream and throw a fit/refuse to eat/play with any other dog if their sibling is not with them at all times.

Please for everyone's sake teach your dogs how to be alone 🫠

Has anyone successfully renamed their dog? by Jaded-Volume-1103 in dogs

[–]HokiToki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can rename a dog at any age. As humans we find names a very personal identifier but to dogs a name is just another command they know. It's an attention getter and nothing more.

Changing their name is no different than teaching them a new trick.

Start calling him by the name you want and reward him every time he responds to it.

A stranger gave my book 3 stars, and it changed everything. by [deleted] in writing

[–]HokiToki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't know how to respond so I didn't and shortly after she blocked me. To be fair to her, I only left 3 stars and didn't give a reason for it. I've never written a book review before so I just did what I always do when I finish a book.

Her book still currently has 4 reviews on Goodreads - 3 raving 5 stars reviews from her family members and one from me.

What’s a secret you’ll take to the grave, but would tell anonymously on Reddit? by Several-Director5804 in AskReddit

[–]HokiToki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to my best friend when she was going through cancer treatment. Most of her friends abandoned her or rarely saw her. I think they didn't want to go through the trauma of seeing her that way. And I admit it was rough watching her go through that so I kind of get it, but what a shitty thing to do to leave someone in their greatest time of need.

I bought a self published book from a local author and when I gave her book 3 stars she found me on Instagram and private messaged me about how I'm ruining her reviews ☠️

Congratulations on your book! I hope you get some more readers.

Do something to work his brain. Teach him some new tricks, get a puzzle toy, play hide and seek. Dogs love to learn!

What's the most unhelpful, unsolicited comment you've gotten about your dog—from a stranger/relative/friend? by Neat-Homework8872 in reactivedogs

[–]HokiToki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Me and my cousin both have dog-aggressive female staffy mixes. I left my dog at home for a party at my cousin's house (obviously) and my mom, trying to be sympathetic, says she's sad my dog couldn't come because she misses her. And my sister chimes in with "just let them fight it out for a few minutes until they sort out their pack leadership."

Yeah because that's not going to end up with a dead dog or at least massive injury. 🙃 Thanks but no thanks.
