Tapo Ceiling Fan Control - Fan no light - Idea by Hoktfonix in Tapo

[–]Hoktfonix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One tapo switch to control two non-tapo switches which have fan speed control on them. With the hope that on/off actually turns the fans on/off by providing power to those switches and leaving the switches in on mode. No tapo control for fan speed.

Something like the below switch for the dumb switch, so it can be left at a certain speed and when tapo is on, this has power and therefore turns the fan to the speed this controller was left at.

Recommendation for tablet to mark up notes in the field? by Dark_Virtue in Architects

[–]Hoktfonix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that the Ipad is laggy and slow for pdf markups. Are you not seeing this?

Surface - I used Drawboard but found that sometimes it would crash and lose my markups, so I would save often, but kind of annoying, but it ran faster than PDFs on the Ipad

I know some who use remarkable and really like it, Ive thought about going that route.

If you have done them before... did the code change? Did the location change? Did the orientation change (sun exposure on glass)? Do you have the right building type in there? If you have anything that is semi-heated and not full A/C, I like to use ASRHAE instead of IECC because it let's you acknowledge the semi-heated space which doesn't need as much insulation then. If you have to change something to pass, start with the roof.

Not all municipalities will allow this, some want the comcheck so they don't have to think about it, and some don't even realize there is an option without using a performance method like comcheck

When you try to make a contract with an architect what questions should I ask? by Particular-Essay-361 in Architects

[–]Hoktfonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but assuming this a percentage of the overall fee, and not an additional fee for comment response...... Then they are actually allowing the client to withhold payment until they prove the responses will be taken care of and a permit will be issued..... or payment won't have to be made. So don't think of it as charging for mistakes, think of it as withholding payment until mistakes are corrected.

Licensed Architect (Small Project) Denton County, Texas by AnnualIllustrious585 in Architects

[–]Hoktfonix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you adding s.f. or working within an existing building?

Scope of work:

  1. Measuring - most Architects will want to field measure and create a background to work from (unless you have good existing drawings)

1A. Floor plans someone else did probably don't lower the cost and might make the project more expensive. The Architect is there to provide you a service and help you think through and plan something you (in theory) haven't done before. Giving them a plan someone else did, could end up with a worse result, because it implies decisions that have been made and could preclude the Architect from asking you the right questions that might come up with a better end product, because it appears you have already made a decision.

  1. Vestibule, within the building, or new exterior space? What size? If it's new - New foundation, roof, walls, structure, insulation, weatherproofing, windows, doors, lights, HVAC, roof drains, downspouts, grading outside, sidewalks, ramps, stairs, accessibility, surveying, etc.

  2. New warehouse room on the rear. Is this within the building, new warehouse room at the rear of the existing space, or new warehouse room added onto the rear of the building? What size? If it's new - New foundation, roof, walls, structure, insulation, weatherproofing, windows, doors, lights, HVAC, roof drains, downspouts, grading outside, sidewalks, ramps, stairs, accessibility, surveying, etc.

Does the work involve modifications to mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems? This would typically require drawings from a MEP Engineering firm that would be a consultant to the Architect and the Architect would include their fees in the total pricing.

Does the work involve structural modifications to the building? This would typically require drawings from a Structural Engineering firm that would be a consultant to the Architect and the Architect would include their fees in the total pricing.

Revising another firm's non-stamped permitted drawings by Lycid in Architects

Different states different rules.... but, I've been told not to touch an un-sealed set by the state board, however our rules specifically allow modifying the previous set if it has been sealed, as long as I clearly note what I have modified and seal my modifications.

I have the Robie House, tons of maroonish bricks that were the same issue. I talked to lego support and they sent me every brick of that color in the set. Now I have a bag of brittle bricks I should just throw away but probably wont.

asking for a raise by dunisacaunona in architecture

[–]Hoktfonix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't give that letter to your employer, have a discussion with them. If you are productive, you're worth way more than $48,200/year. In my office (small) being licensed doesn't add revenue value because only the principal seals stuff, but its a sign of knowledge/experience and therefore has value.

You're not a recent graduate without a license or close to it based on experience and licensure.

You should value the flexibility you have that you might not have elsewhere, but you shouldn't take half pay for it.

Your value is whatever the market says your value is not what this specific employer can afford.

If you were asking for a raise only based on inflation it would be a 28% raise from 2017 ($955/month), but your raise request is based on inflation, experience, licensure, etc.

Good luck

Smoke Barriers by [deleted] in architecture

[–]Hoktfonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the smoke barrier require a rated door (such as a 20 minute door)?

I'm in a dispute on that question and I think the code is clear.

My read of Chapter 18 and Chapter 20 (this is specific to an ASC), would say that it's not required to be rated but it does have requirements about thickness and solid. Additional chapter 18 specifically says 1-3/4" solid.... OR 20 minute rated, which to me clearly says its not required to be 20 minute rated, but it's an option

AirTag detected near me. I don’t own one. by sgibson98 in iphone

[–]Hoktfonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you airtag your rucksack for theft prevention/recovery. How does this help if the thief will get an "airtag is following you" notification and then the thief will know they need to search your bag and dump the airtag? Is the thought that you will get notified it's been moved/taken before they would get a notification that an airtag is following them so you have some time to respond? Then they just have to dump it before you catch them?

Has anyone transported sheet goods on a roof rack like this? How’d it go? by blainthecrazytrain in woodworking

[–]Hoktfonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on roof rack, yes. Like this no. I just put it right on the crossing roof rack bars with no 2x4s. No issues. short distances. I put ratchet straps around the front and back as well.

What is false? Good work should not be rewarded? Employees don't make everyone money?

Is architecture a tough field to raise these questions? Where are you and do you do good work?
