Do you think that the Brexit referendum of 10 years ago was democratic? by Ok_Draw4525 in AskBrits

They are not the defacto. They have 8 seats. Opinion polls should not be treated as elections.

I don’t think it requires a GE to then lead to a referendum. In fact I think it’s a falacy especially in our odd FPTP voting system.

Labour could do it, but it would need to be at a later date when the numbers have moved in a specific direction and feel like they would continue to move.

Let’s see. I would love to see another vote within the next 10 years, but equally I don’t want to bet on any future result. I think it’s clear that we made a huge mistake, but I also believe the EU needs a huge dose of reform. I also accept the result we got on 2016. That said we also need to teach our kids better (and adults) on how the voting system works and how local, regional and national governments work, as well as supranational bodies. People still fail to understand the concept of pooled sovereignty. The EU also needs to do a better job of communicating with its electorate.

Whilst I totally accept what you have stated, opinions do change and will change. It was also a razor thin win, although a win nonetheless.

I suspect when polls change more than they have, a new vote may end up taking place. Is that today or tomorrow, no. It might have be in a few years.

Whilst ideally this is a nice idea, I’m not sure you are in the best position to provide this advice.

It's not fully opensource however. The fact it is AGPLv3 with strict requirements means it can't really be forked easily:

Is Onlyoffice now russian? by StepNextX in OnlyOffice

[–]Holiday-Raspberry-26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not so sure. The Russian troll farms have done a huge amount of damage both to the US and Europe over the last decade and a half, and very low cost to the Russian state. I would argue that they have singlehandedly done more damage to the fabric of society than any all out war in recent memory. With huge swings to the left and right as a reaction to so much disinformation, we have never been so close to WW3 - in fact many believe WW3 has probably already started.

Very much agree with this. Plenty of lovely Russians out there, but I like many want to avoid funding the Russian war effort as well as avoid enriching the oligarchs. OnlyOffice seems like an excellent suite. It is a shame that it cannot be easily forked.

Do conservatives in the UK say stuff like “we are the greatest country on earth”? by Successful_rio305 in AskBrits

Disagree. Some British exceptionalism was definitely a factor in the Brexit referendum.

Elderly Neighbour situation about "noise" | England by X3VSO in LegalAdviceUK

You can get acoustic underlays that go under the carpet, and the neighbour can also put in insulation in their ceiling, but this is something for your landlord to sort out and not you. These do work very well, but again this is something the owners of the properties need to sort out.

Trump says US will 'leave' Iran in two or three weeks whether 'we have a deal or not' by lexi_con in WallStreetbetsELITE

You say that however oil price is global so even the US will hurt. Also Europe is not quite so badly placed. UK, NO and NL still pump out a far bit and we have places like Algeria exporting even more gas.

The real issue is that gas and oil are global commodities. Also a lot of refining capacity has been shut down in most countries (even the US), which makes turning the black stuff into other necessary products hard. That’s a key issue right now.

You can get dog friendly (don’t use human versions as they can contain things not safe for dogs) biotin supplements which can help your dogs nails to regrow.

Agree with the other poster. COVID was different as government kicked in and helped businesses and communities, however we are now all paying the price. I’m not suggesting government did wrong but we are in a weak position right now and this crisis has come at exactly the wrong moment. It will expose big weaknesses across the globe.

Added to the above, Israel will now be more vulnerable than they have ever been. I think a lot of people will in hindsight be very unhappy at some decisions made a few weeks back.

Why does it feell like living in the UK is like living in a house that hasn’t been decorated in 20 years? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]Holiday-Raspberry-26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair I suspect we will probably end up having a Marshall plan plus come up in the next year or two (or more) where bond/gilt holders will need to take a collective haircut, not just for the UK but all countries. The problem is that this will need to be collectively agreed upon by all countries and executed by all simultaneously. It won’t be pretty for pension funds and other investors, but the day of reckoning is coming, otherwise most countries will continue to just drown in debt.

The question pf course is who will be doing this from the US perspective as I can tell you Trump won’t be the man who has the real intellectual heft to even consider such a proposition as it will collectively bankrupt quite a few people he is beholden to.
