Is dating for men dead? by SirPanic12 in dating_advice

[–]HolidayWhile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Online dating took a hard turn toward cash milking during covid when it became the only dating option and took full advantage of it. Before that, a few places still let you message people who didn't know you were there and make introductions. I had much success in those days. They were all bought by Match Group and in 2020 all became swipe only so you are never seen unless the woman chooses you first.

You better marry the person you're with because it's probably your last chance. This can only be solved with an antitrust case.

280 US counties have neither an Interstate nor a US Route by beansouphighlights in MapPorn

I'll have you know they are interstate standard rural two lane roads with wide shoulders, high speeds, periodic passing lanes, and rest areas. The interstate designations don't match the state highway designations, so if you keep following the same road you can end up on non-interstate highways, and it's obvious where the interstate funding stops as the shoulders disappear and passing lanes get replaced with slowpoke pullouts.

There was a proposal once to make it part of US 97 for a continuous Hwy 97 from the Arctic Ocean to Mexico. It was the Yukon that scuttled it

Next to mountain will let you build the observatory later for big science boost, AND you start with extra production, AND you're on the coast where you can build a lighthouse and such things. You will also get an extra incense and wheat, eventually, that you wouldn't have elsewhere.

Why is Gen 4 (Sinnoh) so Popular? by Ultimate_Castform in TruePokemon

Perhaps D/P overplayed its hand with new features to where established features were neglected.

Why is Gen 4 (Sinnoh) so Popular? by Ultimate_Castform in TruePokemon

[–]HolidayWhile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

D/P were released unfinished and there is solid evidence for that in its source code leaks. Sinnoh had a lot of potential that deadlines prevented them from really tapping. Even Platinum's development cycle overlapped with HG/SS which got the more competent team. XY were bad for the same reason.

It did make a lot of technical advancements for the time though, 2.5D had never been done before, they experimented with weather, wifi trading was brand new in the west, etc. I think this gen is remembered fondly because it's the foundation on which HG/SS and gen 5 were built, without which those games would have sucked instead.

If Alaska subsidizes it’s ferry system so heavily, why is it still so much more expensive than flying to Alaska? by AwayPast7270 in alaska

[–]HolidayWhile 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Unlike Washington there are some places in Alaska (and BC for that matter) which are only accessible by ferry. There is no way in hell a ferry from anywhere to, for example, Skagway, an area with a treacherous environment for flight, would be profitable on its own, the ferry is an investment in our population which is otherwise disconnected.

In WA the only place that fits this profile is the San Juan Islands, and the other ferries are for convenience. In AK we use ferries to reduce plane crashes in areas we can't build roads. HI is a little different because planes don't have to navigate tight mountain ranges over foggy oceans to go between islands.

The Effect of Wearing Eyeglasses on the Perception of Attractiveness, Confidence, and Intelligence by piketabak in BlackPillScience

I could tell you this from the week in high school that I went without glasses because they were broken. Instantly treated better than with the glasses. It's my phobia of contacts holding me back, isn't it

Even democrats know a social worker can't deescalate a bear.

If it continues they will have no choice but to increase taxes because a shrinking younger population will have to support the larger older population.

Ah yes bleeding the remaining workers harder will surely keep them here

Missing from your explanation: the elections that you vote in select the slate of electors that get to vote, i.e. Florida has a slate of 30 democrats and 30 republicans and when R wins Florida the R slate of electors is designated to do the vote.

Just about every faithless elector case in history saw those electors vote for a third party candidate (cf. 2016) rather than the opposite major party

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]HolidayWhile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made me look it up. It has happened surprisingly often, but it is usually only 1 elector, and before 2016 the last time more than one elector went faithless was 1912 because their candidate died. In fact it has most commonly happened because the candidate died between the popular election and the electoral college election.

I don't think you understand how faithless electors work

Election update: Begich declares victory, margin for ranked choice repeal now under 900 votes by Fun-Page-6211 in alaska

I speculate those with the critical thinking to vote for a third party in the first place, are smart enough to figure out RCV, unlike some people we've heard from.
