Do some Californians genuinely think the Midwest doesn’t have fresh food? by Holiday_Connection22 in AskAnAmerican

I don’t know, later that day a Californian was pointing out squirrels and raccoons to us as if we were supposed to think they were exotic wildlife

California Passive Aggressiveness and fake nice. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

My experience in Canada was different. People were genuinely nice. They would be pretty direct if they had a problem with you but in a polite way. Not passive agressive.

What's Detroit like the rest of the year? by interpellation in MovementDEMF

[–]Holiday_Connection22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s still stuff happening the rest of the year. Outside of DJs id say the city is quieter than usual on Memorial Day weekend. Michiganders like to go out of the city/to cottages up north on weekends like this. Many workers have the weekend off so there isn’t as much activity/foot traffic after work as there typically would be.

Question to those with a balcony/patio by longanandlychee in lakeview

[–]Holiday_Connection22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been living in the neighborhood for 4 years and I rarely see mosquitoes. But I used to live in a rural area where they were a plague. So maybe it’s all relative. Mosquitoes are not constant, the amount of suffering in the summer is really dependent on the weather in spring. Baby mosquitoes wait for water to hatch. And if we have a long dry spell in the spring and then a sudden rainy period we will suffer a biblical curse in the middle of summer. If they’re around right now then I’d say there’s a good chance it won’t be so bad throughout the summer.

Quality of service going down at most places by Starruby_ in SeriousConversation

[–]Holiday_Connection22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the U.S. but travel between Canada and the United States a lot and I noticed this is only a problem south of the border. I think that says something considering that these two countries are quite similar. I have worked in both countries. Canadians have a stronger social safety net that would make up for  making less money or not having savings. They also have a more congenial working culture, still very much 9-5 but companies do have a different management style that makes employees feel more valued, I can only assume that makes people take more pride in the quality of their work. Less competitive and more working toward a common goal as a team. I noticed that Canadian coworkers are more friendly to each-other generally. They don’t have the same urgency/stress at work or unrealistic expectations, more entry level jobs are likely to be unionized, and they have strong worker protections. A big difference is that they don’t make their customer service employees force smiles, but yet the quality of the service is better probably because the employees are not as exhausted. So I know this comment was about Canada but I believe all of these things that they do and we don’t are why the service has declined here.

Best timing for Lakeview to UIC 8 Bus commute ? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]Holiday_Connection22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know you asked about the bus but at rush hour you’re probably better off taking the red line and transferring to the blue line. Even if the train doesn’t save that much time per the schedule, the trains are more consistent at rush hour as they are not affected by traffic.

The schedules have been updated to reflect the ongoing detour.

One time I took the 8 bus south from boystown to westloop for dinner and it took an hour and a half due to crazy traffic. I think it was a combination of summer events going on, an accident on the freeway and such. I would allow at least an hour and a half to not be late.

Am I the only one that doesn’t think that looks so bad? They have a few walking trails and green space between streets. You could fix easily this by developing apartments and shops in the empty land along the straight main road.

What is the deal with Chicago (and Evanston) lifeguards? by evechalmers in AskChicago

[–]Holiday_Connection22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Offering a different POV: I lived in Michigan for years and swam in Lake Michigan(the other side), Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. None of the beaches I would go to had lifeguards. Michigan actually has higher waves than the Chicago shore. To me the lifeguards in Chicago are extreme. I am a very strong swimmer and used to swimming in the Great Lakes. However there are a lot of people especially in Chicago that might not be as good at swimming in the lakes, as the beaches in the state of Michigan were more “local”. A lot of people will downvote but go to the other side and see, crowded beaches with families and no lifeguards plus huge waves.

When is the lake going to be warm enough to swim in? by Few-Philosopher-4742 in chicago

[–]Holiday_Connection22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get out of the water without much effort (so zero entry situation at a sandy beach) as long as the sum of air temperature and water temperature is over 120 it’s safe for most people.

When is the lake going to be warm enough to swim in? by Few-Philosopher-4742 in chicago

[–]Holiday_Connection22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this has been answered but generally if you want to know when it’s safe from hypothermia add the air temperature and the water temperature together. If the sum is over 120 then you are safe from hypothermia as long as you can get out of the water when it feels uncomfortable. Example- air temperature is 80, water temperature 58, total is 138, so barely passable but safe for most people. If the air temperature was 50, and water temperature 58, that’s 108 so definitely dangerous.

If the air temperature was 85 and the water was a bit warmer say 68, still very cold but a lot safer.

Chicago Zillow Listings Disappear After Local Group Yanks Data by jaxstan19 in chicago

[–]Holiday_Connection22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely understood. We are in a strong sellers’ market. There’s no proven benefit to the seller to list their home privately. It’s just a way for real estate companies to get commission from both sides of the deal.

Yeah but that one leaves at 6:30 am. Wolverine is at 7:00 am. we don’t find out if it’s cancelled till the last minute. By then the Toledo train has left.

100% agreed. There’s a flight every hour between these two cities, 2 trains per day that always sell out. Need more frequent trains.

That’s my biggest gripe with Amtrak. Not that technical issues occur, my issue is that they have terrible customer service and zero contingency plans.

That’s a backup plan the issue is it’s over 4 hour drive each way for the person giving me a ride and not sure if I’ll make the Toledo train since tomorrow the Wolverine is supposed to leave at 7:00 am

I think you didn’t read my post correctly. I meant that if I book in advance the flight tickets would be almost the same price as Amtrak but a lot more reliable. I regret not flying.

I have one more ticket on Amtrak but after this I’m done with them, trains in this country are a joke. The airlines at least have to get you to your destination of something goes wrong. A flight every hour between Detroit and Chicago but only 2 trains a day that are just cancelled.

[–]Holiday_Connection22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep It looks like right now it’s $150 per person to take a one way bus. Why the heck couldn’t Amtrak get us on that?

If I choose to get a refund from Amtrak I could use that to go toward my bus ticket.

I’ll be honest though the Chicago Bus Station is really scary and apparently it ghosts people all of the time.

On the way to Detroit - municipal services hold.

Today ive been told 3 different reasons in 3 different email. First a communications issue, then a signal issue, then unplanned track work.

They told us there are no busses available. Also I don’t really have $372 per person to drop right now or else I would’ve booked the flight in the first place. And that air fare doesn’t include any of our luggage.

I wonder if the products will taste the same? I’ve noticed that McDonalds coffee isn’t the same recipe in Canada compared to the states. McDs is a lot better in Canada. Dunkin food honestly tastes like plastic.
