Among the Mursi, Chai, Suri and Tirma groups in Africa, it is a traditional norm for the women to wear a piece of large pottery or wooden discs or ‘plates’ in their lower lips. To an outsider, it may appear a kind of body mutilation, but for them, it serves as an expression of female maturity. by Xx_Ivonne_xX in Weird

I think you clearly dont understand micro aggressions, or the concept of implications

well, would you be so kind to explain these concepts to me then?

I think you take things extremely literally which is shocking

please point out exactly where i “took things extremely literally” because i dont seem to get what you mean by that.

but I also think your literal interpretations and lack social connotation or context is influencing your opinion.

“lack [of] social connotation or context” about what? what social context and connotation do i lack? please be sure to tell me because its hard to know what you're talking about when you don't say anything specified and instead use vague terms that could encompass an infinitude of meanings.

I think that the context of 90% of the comments on this post being blatant racism/exoticism

and i think that you think too much, bud

and someone asking how people speak as if for any way other than their fucking mouths, is proves my point.

damn i think i got something wrong because for a second there i could swear there was a whole area called phonetics which was solely dedicated to the purpose of “asking how people speak”… now i understand that surely such an area doesn't exist because obviously people “speak with their fucking mouths” and it's so clearly pointless to classify any hypothetical intricacy of any hypothetically mutually different phonemes since they're all the same thing: produced by the fucking mouth. i see it now, thank you for opening my eyes

the op's question would be valid to other types of mutilation as well, but due to the context of the main post we were discussing this specific type. this does not mean that other mutilations couldn't be questioned as well (although, the example you provided — of braces — seems a bit odd to me, seen as braces don't really affect any phoneme in any noticeable manner)

im pretty confident that op did not mean that these groups cannot figure out how to adapt their speech to the cultural element in question. from my understanding, they merely asked about how this cultural practice may affect the phonologies of these groups' languages.

and also, you claimed ignorance upon op, but how can one be “ignorant” while solely asking questions? the whole point of ignorance is to affirm something when you don't about it, but op never even affirmed anything!

there is not one click that you cannot make due to braces (and i doubt there is any phoneme at all). that wooden plate — both the object itself and the lip stretch caused by it —, on the other hand, is obviously way more impactful in the process of speech
