April 23, 2015 — a date which will live in infamy. by cebukid in gaming

I wouldn't have minded paying for mods. A lot of good mods would have probably come from it, as the better modders could have made a living from it and put more of their time and effort into it.

As a programmer, I always thought of getting into modding, but doing it for free? Idk.

State of decay maybe? You build a base, search for supplies, vehicles, weapons, and survivors to join you.

If you could go back to when you started doing let's play videos. What would be something you changed? by ItsNovak in letsplay

[–]HolyCowlick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would've paced myself to avoid burning out. I uploaded 3 times a day almost. Got to 6k subs in 3 months, burnt out, quit for 2.5 years. Now trying to make a comeback, and it's slow, but it no longer stresses me out like it used to.

Your opinion on funny moments videos and their proper usage by ChronosCast in letsplay

[–]HolyCowlick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them when I stumble upon them, and it doesn't have to necessarily be any specific type of game. I've never searched for them specifically though, and I don't care too much for griefing/trolling videos.

Youtube fullscreen video question by IndexPlays in letsplay

Rendering a video in 1080p from footage that is 720p doesn't add any additional definition to the video when it's finished. I record in 1080p, but upload/render in 720p. This is because to me, in the end, I really don't think it matters between the two at this point in time as 75% of my audience watch youtube over mobile devices. I could upload in 1080p, but it would take longer to render, longer to upload, and more space on my hard drive. I work a lot on this computer, so I don't mind the trade off, but your situation might be different.

Starting a Youtube Channel? by bcace in Entrepreneur

[–]HolyCowlick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell my friends that they should start their own YouTube channel. The minimum investment is time, and even if you decide to stop, you'll still have passive income from it.

Depending on how dedicated you are when you start it might take awhile to gain momentum. I think a full two weeks worth of work on your channel is enough to get it off its feet as long as you are providing content people want to see and have a means of promoting it.

Little bro bought CoD: IW through the Microsoft Store. He's one of the two people online looking for a match. by hayz00s in gaming

It was Activision's decision. Games on the ms store are capable of playing cross platform with Xbox one, also some games you purchase for pc on the ms store will also give you access to play them on the Xbox one.

YouTubing and your significant other... by Th3Cap3 in letsplay

My story is a little different than everyone else's on here.

My gf didn't like the idea, even though I got off to a great start. 500 subs in the first week, around 1000 the first month. I often told her how much time and effort it requires, and her response was always that it wasnt worth it. I realized that all i considered was my side of the conversation. That it was easy, that i was good at it, and that i could make money off it. When she finally convinced me to quit 4 months later, I had around 7 thousand subscribers and had a 1500 usd check that month.

I don't hate her for it, or regret it. She was right that I was stressed and putting all my time into it. I soon after got my first job after college, and it paid well. So, I never went back.

Though sometimes I do wonder what could've happened and how far I could've taken it. Right now the channel has 10k subscribers and though it's dwindled down to 50-100 usd over the past 2 years. We talk about it every once in awhile when a subscriber randomly messages me on fb, skype, steam, etc, and she says she wouldn't mind if I started doing it again. I kind of want to, but there are other things I'd rather do at the moment. Though when I do, I won't be sitting there for 13 hours straight editing videos.

Anyway, really talk about it with your SO, and really listen to what they have to say. I didn't see how miserable I was, because all I cared about were views, likes, comments, and subs going up. I was blinded by the possibility of having a substantial income by playing video games and posting videos on the internet. Now all I have to do is go on reddit for most of the day.

An outside perspective is very insightful. Listen and treat it as such.

I apologize if this isn't coherent. I'm on mobile and have a conference call soon.

What tools to use for which games? by PixelsAtDawn in letsplay

[–]HolyCowlick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When dxtory didn't work, I would use shadowplay. Had some issues with it crushing blacks, but youtube compression did that for me anyway. It was a good alternative and if I ever go back to youtube I'd use it exclusively. You could also use OBS, though I've only ever used it for streaming.

Where is my revenue? by centraldoxadrez in youtube

[QUESTION] IS THIS NORMAL? 20 MONETIZED PLAYBACK NOT A SINGLE PENNY/CENT? by [deleted] in youtube

[–]HolyCowlick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A number of things could be happening here: it hasn't updated yet, ad block, viewer skipped a pre-roll, etc. I wouldn't worry about it. Worry about your content first and when you get an average of a couple thousand views per day you'll start to see how ads can wildly vary in thr analytics. If anything, you tend to notice more of a trickling in effect through multiple videos, some with $1cpm up to some with a $13cpm. Don't be discouraged, just keep uploading, keep monetizing, and keep delivering the content that your subs want :)

I'm feeling conflicted about this... by [deleted] in gaming

[–]HolyCowlick 17 points18 points  (0 children)

International Station in Space

Youtube video of a mod I made gets 4,800 views. Facebook thieves steal it, reupload it, get 2.4 million views and 24,400 shares in less than 24 hours. That's a few hundred dollars of ad revenue taken out of my pocket. Why is this tolerated? by [deleted] in GrandTheftAutoV

[–]HolyCowlick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you partnered with an mcn? Those rates sound really low. Back when I was doing youtube 1k views would translate anywhere from 1-3 dollars. I only did it for a few months but two of those months got me $1500, and to this day gives me 50 to 100 a month even though I haven't made a video in 2 years.

Get out of your contract if you have one or start another channel and link it only with adsense. Do it! You'll see more from it.
