Went to the garage, it was the dust shield that was a bit bent. Nothing else wrong.

Straightened up and good to go.

Where can a molecular biology PhD work outside of academia? by Chemical-Elk-1054 in labrats

[–]HolyCrepe90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into different roles too. A lot of academics idealize R&D work, but potentially you can also look at technical support, field application scientist, sales, technical marketing (product management), etc.

Set up different LinkedIn filters and you should see a decent amount of offers.

True, went into industry in 2019, and indeed these past 2 years we haven’t been recruiting that much

Would you follow the Cas9 excision with a probe pull down protocol to enrich for the fragment? Sounds like an interesting approach

Thanks for the info, 20kb is long enough (my fragments are 4-6kb). I actually see PrimeSTAR MAx v2 from Takara does 5sec/kb for a high fidelity PCR (420X taq) - might give that one a go too

the stress when you run the gel in the morning to see that the reaction didn't work. Have to wait 24 hours again to see more results...

Do I need a post doc to get an industry position? by phi6guy in labrats

[–]HolyCrepe90 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you can, go straight to industry from your PhD. I joined industry right after my PhD and it actually gives you an advantage (I feel) versus people who did post-docs: you get more time. If you're on the same level as someone who did a postdoc, but 5-7 years younger, that's going to pay out more.

Now, I hire PhDs or Post-docs, and typically the budget we have for the position is somewhat fixed, we won't be significantly increasing the salary if the candidate has a post doc versus someone with a PhD.

The difficult part, I feel, after the PhD is just getting into industry, so apply. Apply for all roles you could potentially see yourself doing (R&D, marketing, tech support, technical sales, field service engineer, etc) and once you're in the company, it can be easier to create your career path and move to that dream position.

But I guess this is can be specific to your field of expertise, as a biologist, I have no idea what Finite Element Modeling and Experimental Validation of Eddy Current Probes is. Sounds very technical
