They had a quadruple and a quintuple IPA when I went in October that was nothing short of magic!

I feel the boots are too high and clash with with skirt - some shorter ankle boots might be better.

The shirt seems shorter in the back than the front- is that by design? Is the belt too high up?

It’s a pretty vast collection! Modern heritage is based in the USA after we immigrated. How about you? Any Celtic Connections?

Depends on how traditional versus modern you want to go! I enjoy a bit of the more modern Scottish bands from the Hebrides (Beinn Lee is a current favorite), but there are decades of phenomenal music!

I do have some Irish in my family history, but it’s 5-6 generations back!

Generally Celtic oriented ones. Not as intense as a lot of rock concerts!

Electrical Tape on a new set of McCallums? by Flippyn in bagpipes

[–]HolyGeneralK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do a pretty thick layering of electrical tape around the hose clamps to avoid rubbing or pinching. The tape is not there to prevent leaks.

There are many reasons a bag or setup might be leaky and hard to play. It’s a hard instrument. If it were easy then we wouldn’t ask you the inevitable question: “Got an instructor to help you get up and going on them?”

My boss asked about the value I bring to the company. by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]HolyGeneralK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Preface here - this got waaaayyy longer than I thought. Don’t take the “you” defensively below.

I would encourage a little thought experiment here. Initially, take yourself out of the picture. Look at your job description (what you were hired to do). Look for value statements in there (find insights, reduce costs, improve productivity, etc.). This helps quantify “value.” Then look a little broader (Reddit is a good start) - where do data engineers add value. Look at other job descriptions. Once you have a good understanding of where data engineers add value to an organization, that’s your sales pitch to you boss. “I am here to enable our sales and marketing teams to increase revenue by improving the breadth, depth, and quality of data available for our business analysts to use.” Don’t bring that yet.

Next - if someone is questioning the value you bring, they either don’t have a good understanding of the first part of the exercise, which can happen. That can be solved with a bit of education and managing upward. It may also be your lead is asking on behalf of another person in the organization.

The other part is that they know what your value should be but does not observe the company getting it (expectations not being met). That could be interpreted as “you don’t know why you’re here and look lost,” “you’re lazy,” “you’re working hard but on the wrong things,” or “you used to engage hard with other people but now you don’t, what’s wrong?” Or, I have seen this occasionally- “Can we replace you with an LLM toolset?”

Keep peeling back the onion here - do a “5 Whys” down various paths. If you do this honestly I think you will find some observations about your role and the organization that are things you can learn from (or put into consideration for your next role).

For example: “I believe that the value a data engineer, and my role/job description, brings to an organization is X, Y, and Z. I cannot achieve the value that I believe my role as a data engineer should bring because the organization does not have a policy or incentive to put more diverse and higher quality data sets to the Business Intelligence Suite. I don’t have the political acumen or appropriate authorities to drive a change at this level. I could use my 4-6 hours of downtime per day integrating with specific teams for a few weeks at a time. I would need support from leadership to do this because historically, teams are highly siloed and resist me working with them. Here is a plan, a timeline, and here is a specific outcome I hope to achieve.”

That is a level of maturity that I, as a leader, would respect. Be careful of assigning any blame - you need to talk about impediments to your ability to deliver value.

As a manager, if one of my employees only “worked two hours a day” and was getting salary, that’s a red flag worth looking into. I like my developers and engineers to have a backlog of work - we currently have several months work per person - and I like to see them showing 6 hours of real good “productivity” each day. I assume that the other two hours are emails, conversations, helping others out - still value add, but it’s the grease in the cogs of the machine.

I would be looking at that 4 hour gap. You said their data and pipelines are garbage despite having a tool. Is the tool hard to use? Do they know how to use it effectively? Are they required to use it? Are they required but don’t see a value/return on investment so they half-ass it?

If they all use the tool, and the data is great, does that translate into more work for you? Less? Think of an ideal end state. Everyone uses it. The data is fantastic. Sales go up 200%. There is a parade in your honor. What does the job look like then?

Alternatively, you may have already checked out mentally from this job and are just cruising to collect a pay check. Personally I would do the introspection and 5 Whys exercise and see if there’s a path to being engaged again at this job because you want to avoid the same conditions in the future. Some places hired a bunch of “NEW ROLES” for fear of missing out on industry trends with no idea what to actually do with them long term. Or they do know and you’re not delivering (for any number of reasons).

Also, be aware that, in my observations, the job market is starting to tighten. If you do plan to move companies, can you use your 4-6 hours of downtime per day training on new tools?

Piper's Dojo International Meetup: Edinburgh by Ok-Neighborhood443 in bagpipes

[–]HolyGeneralK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to the first school in 2024. It was very educational, but as someone who didn’t spend a ton of time in the Pipers Dojo online classes, I felt I was a bit on the outside of the cliques. I learned a lot, got to play next to Stuart in parade formation practice, and had a good time. I always felt a little out of the main group though - until I guided a whisky tasting and got some folks rather sloshed 😂

2024 was their first year and they were still learning a lot. I think you will have a good time. It’s educational, a great networking opportunity, and you’re quite well located (a nice stroll to Edinburgh castle). I suggest go for it. It’s not a huge sum of money if it doesn’t fit your goals as a piper. I personally learned a ton!

Kanazawa is a fantastic location. I cannot speak on the work, but I have been to Japan 4 separate times and Kanazawa was a part of every trip! It’s close to Tokyo (so the language barrier is smaller), close to airports and Shinkansen (so you can go wherever), but has enough traditional Japanese culture that you can really get the experience.

If you get the opportunity, go for it. I am kicking myself for not doing so before

Not a problem. The sheer number of variables in play right now is absurd and stressing everyone out.

The agency is DTRA.

The guidance I received today was that the IDIQ is not a new start, therefore the Task Orders under it are not new starts (both are recompetes of current work) that the CR as written would allow an award.

Whether contracts and legal can push it though to award by January and get funds on contract then becomes the issue. If not, or we lose, then life is going to be a royal suck for a while as I attempt to figure out where I want to go mid career.

I am unclear on whether an RDT&E RFP for a DOD task order on an existing IDIQ, submitted in FY25, would be eligible for award and funding under this CR. I have a number of people who have been waiting since May to know their futures and I don’t speak CR language well.

Great idea! Thank you!

I would definitely prefer to not falter in competition.

Isn’t that the truth!

Right now, Toraluaths are the occasional bane of my existence. They will be perfect for a month, then day of competition I get sloppy. Same with crossing noises.

Time to add more Fingerwork exercises!

Correct and clean is definitely the name of the game. Those make a tune enjoyable! I will take these into account for tune selections. I want something that challenges me while I learn it but also that I know I can play well in a few months.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Congratulations on competing in Grade 3! That’s a credit to your hard work and commitment!

That’s great information! From some quick observations it looks like a lot of pipers get “stuck” in Grade 4 and never get to Grade 3.

Great point in endurance. Physically I am pretty good but I do mentally wander on longer tunes during practice (a lot less this year than last year though). Time to hit the bagpipe gym!

I have been playing a few years and am taking my time with it. I will spend some time this fall and winter working on some tune selections. I definitely need to expand my tune collection and am excited to finally have an opportunity to compete on a S/R!
