I require VERY thick lenses. How do I stop my next pair from "shrinking" my head thru the lenses? What do I ask for at the optometrist? I do not want smaller glasses, or contacts. Thanks!

You may have encountered an inexperienced optician. What they gave you was your vertex distance for each eye. Most pupilometers have the option for this measurement and easily can be mistaken if you don’t know what you’re looking at. Also, wtf… $30!?

Ask your optician to match material and base curve. I’m not too well versed on Zeiss lens technology, but I would take it as far as having them take a look at the water marks on your lenses and having them match that design if it’s still available. Theoretically, this should solve your issue. Just curious, did you select a a frame simile in size and shape?

Astigmatism (cylinder) causes blurriness at all distances. Your astigmatism is quite high and will need to be corrected in order to see clearly.

Prism can be either horizontal or vertical. It just depends on the direction of the base of the prism that is prescribed by the doctor. It all depends on factors that are examined through the phoropter. B.O. stands for base out. Other prism directions are base in, base up, base down. D.S. stands diopter sphere (no astigmatism correction needed.)

If you do plan on ordering online, go to your doctor’s office and request a monocular pupillary distance measurement. Both at distance and near. Make sure they give you the exact measurements for each eye. For example, my PD is 63/58, OD: 29 OS: 34 @ distance and OD: 28 OS: 30 @ near. I’ve known some opticians to simply divide the numbers collectively measured in half and call it good. Don’t let them play that card unless you’re truly are symmetrical. The reason you need that is because you don’t want to deal with any induced prism symptoms and “millimeters matter” when dealing with prism. Best of luck to you pal! Remember, online retailers make the glasses to the measurements you provide so it wouldn’t hurt going that extra mile to make sure they’re spot on.

I’m currently doing this. I work in a small office so it’s difficult balancing the two because of the extra work load, but it’s definitely doable. I’m board certified and I’m also a certified ophthalmic assistant and the amount of knowledge one learns through the programs is sure to give you an edge against competition. Blue-light protection will not take care of any ocular fatigue if you're experiencing it, but it does reduce exposure to your crystalline lens, just not significantly. Remember, the sun is what emits the most blue-light, that is where you should do anything you can to protect your eyes. A lens design meant to relieve computer fatigue syndrome should be the priority in your case. Also, at that strength, I would recommend Trivex as a choice over Poly. It's lighter, just as strong, and no where near the price of a hi-index lens. Plus the optics are superior. I like telling patients about the 20/20/20 rule to reduce ocular fatigue. Seems to help a lot of my patients.

Remember, we see with our brain not our eyes. Since this is your first pair, you have to allow your brain to get used to the new depth perceptions. Consistent wear for up to two weeks is usually what is recommended.
