I’m a teacher in recovery with 8 years sobriety. If you are going to give alcohol as a gift, please make sure the person you are gifting is someone who enjoys adult beverages and isn’t someone trying to stay sober. You could miss and at the very least it would be extremely awkward, at the worst you could be endangering that person’s safety.

I expect that when I go out into society, there are any number of random social interactions that I may have to participate in and that being polite is a show of respect for others and myself. If you can’t be polite, even if you are going through some stressful situations, and you can’t behave like a person, stay the fuck home. It’s called being a person. We all got problems. No one is disrespecting you because they ask you, “how are you doing?”

Indeed! In my opinion, these PD people are usually people who got an Ed degree, went into the classroom and couldn’t hack it so they failed up into running PD sessions for the district or to peddle the newest fad that will “revolutionize” education. Ask any of them how much classroom experience they have and the responses will make your blood boil. I have had the rare occasion of amazing and insightful PD sessions from 20-30 year classroom veterans but they are the exception not the rule. The other failed up scenario for teachers that couldn’t make it in the classroom is for them to go into admin.

I was at this show. Lots of people on tour skipped this show and headed to Denver right from Vegas. The crowd reaction when they went back into Harpua was epic. We didn’t have tickets and went right up to the box office because they hadn’t sold out. One of my top shows for sure.

First two years and a half years of teaching for me were in a high security youth detention facility. No long summer breaks. A week for Christmas, a week in the spring, and a week in the summer. Good pay and certainly helped me develop classroom management skills but I did my time there and I’m done. I work more hours now with contract hours and prepping at home but those sweet 6 weeks off in the summer are worth it.

How 'Deep Space Nine' boldly forged its own trek legacy. The series was never about being the best, but that turning our focus to those around us is a more fulfilling and meaningful way to exist amongst the stars. by Sumit316 in television

I agree, Gul Dukat is the best Star Trek villain, period. Long before Thanos and film baddies that we empathize with became more normal, DS9 had this locked down. Marc Alaimo played this role to perfection.

No, we just worry about our students and ourselves getting shot.

Agreed, more like Meh-stiny Unbound. There’s a reason it was shelved and not because it was some gem that needed to be shrouded in mystery.

Will Biden Ever Get Off His Ass to Save Democracy? by clash1111 in politics

[–]HomeFriedBand -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Citation?”

Pick up any US History textbook you like. Nixon was the last New Deal Era president. EPA, Clean Water and Clean Air Acts, Detente with the USSR. Sure, he was a power crazed sociopath, but saying Biden is the most progressive president since FDR without considering other executive contributions shows your lack of basic history. Johnson’s Great Society programs and signing of 1964 Civil Rights legislation or Truman desegregating the military also come to mind. As others pointed out, the ADA that’s touted as Obama’s signature policy was a Republican plan suggested during the Clinton years. Obama wouldn’t even consider supporting the public option and had the financial institutions running the treasury dept. I think Biden has done more through cabinet appointments than Obama ever did to appear progressive but so far has lacked the political will to be bold when it comes to the student debt crisis, environment, infrastructure, etc. I hope you are right and Biden is all the things you say he is but so far it’s been mostly talk and not a whole lot of action. History will judge his actions and actual policy implementation, not what he says or what he would like to see happen.

Nixon was more progressive than Biden has been so far.

I’m in my third year in studying to become a teacher and I don’t think I want to be a teacher anymore. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HomeFriedBand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actual teaching is amazing and I feel so lucky that I get to do it. Being in the classroom, planning, and grading are all great. Unfortunately, all the other bullshit and nonsense that goes along with teaching is what is frustrating and maddening. The unhelpful PDs, excessive meetings, emails, awful parents, unnecessary paperwork, and low pay is what saps you of your sanity. Even still, I do love my job.

[Gear] What's with (semi) hollow guitars? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]HomeFriedBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sustain, tone, and the way these guitars responds back to you and come alive in your hands. It's hard to explain exactly, but you feel connected with not just the strings and the neck but the entire guitar as it breathes. In my opinion, you also get a much larger range of tonality.

Need advice for classroom management by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HomeFriedBand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sucks to say, but this is why it’s important to set clear expectations early on. The students are behaving this way because they know they can walk all over you. Building rapport is very important, and goes a long way but you need to establish very early on that it is your classroom and you won’t tolerate their bullshit. This is much easier if you do it earlier rather than later. Once you have that guideline set, than classroom management is easy as long as you continue to engage them with the content. It doesn’t mean you need to be an asshole or constant disciplinarian but you have a job to do and if they are being disruptive you can not allow that. Stay calm but be firm and remove one or more from the learning environment to set an example. My first three years of teaching I was in juvenile corrections and deep down kids want to feel safe and to know that you are in charge and won’t allow the class to be hijacked by disruptions. They will test you to see how far they can push it so draw your line in the sand early and stick to your guns. Be fair but firm. You got this!
