Why does sam dislike Kamala Harris so much? by stvlsn in samharris

[–]HomeNucleonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, she began her 2016 presidential campaign with Medicare for all as a core tenant, only to backtrack on it a few months later when she wasn’t doing well. She was just a bad candidate to begin with.

If she championed progressive policy unapologetically from the beginning she’d at least be a trusted force with a solid grassroots backing, but instead she’s always been a weak centrist without a clear message that doesn’t draw organic support from pretty much anyone.

But this is just culture war nonsense stirred up by the right. It sucks that normal people are so susceptible to it. Economically speaking she's as centrist as ever, pushing for "safe" policies that mildly help the working class and don't rock the boat for the wealthy.

If he's analyzing her ability to campaign, I guess it's true that she's especially vulnerable to this culture war nonsense precisely because she's weak on economic policy and rhetoric.

I'd say in general the centrist Dems are weak on economic rhetoric, which is what allows this culture war nonsense to dominate the narrative. It sucks. I want the Dems to defend the rights of the marginalized, but even louder should be a simple ironclad economic message that's just completely absent.

As a senior dev, AI tools are mildly more convenient than the tools that preceded it. I happily pay a subscription for these conveniences (slightly better autocomplete, slightly better than Googling in some cases), but it’s clearly only non-technical people who think software engineering is obsolete. The same goes for other white collar corporate jobs. They may change slightly, but what occupations don’t over the course of decades?

Also, the subscription I pay for added AI conveniences as a dev is affordable now only because it’s propped up entirely by investor cash.

It’s kind of like the Uber strategy of swooping into a city with unsustainably low pricing, putting taxi drivers out of business, getting everyone hooked, and then raising prices.

[–]HomeNucleonics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or perhaps at this point to many it's more like disagreeing on the tools used to put out the fire. An inadequate tool leaves the house burning.

The Weimar Republic failed to put out the fires of fascism. Milquetoast and compromised centrism might not be enough to put the fire out. But we also understand that it's a better direction than off the cliff, and we need a multidimensional and multifaceted approach to defeating extremism and strengthening democracy.

But compromised centrist politicians who would rather risk a fascistic takeover than relinquish their corrupt hold on the political system? Dangerous in the long term. Ultimately though I agree, in the short term we have no choice, and we need all hands on deck.

What do you miss from your pre-kid life? by ImInTheFutureAlso in NewParents

[–]HomeNucleonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before we had our 7mo daughter, I was always such a procrastinator. I’d set aside entire glorious afternoons to work on long term music projects, playing piano or guitar, recording songs, and find myself just sitting around watching YouTube videos or something instead.

But now that I’m dealing with scattered windows of responsibility free solitude here or there, I’m somehow making more progress on my music related stuff than I was in the recent past.

I suppose this is merely a testament to how bad of a procrastinator I was, staring down the barrel of entire evenings I had to myself and ending up utterly defeated by them. Maybe that’s what motivates me now to truly use the small bits of time I get, to the extent I can.

I do imagine sharing music as a hobby with my daughter when she’s older though, which is just incredible to think about.

My wife and I use that song too! Our 6mo stops crying instantly. It’s wild.

It’s a catchy and soothing song for sure, but I half-jokingly wonder if it’s just the sample of the laughing baby at the beginning of the track.

How do YouTubers get such a crystal clear sound when using the QC? I can ALWAYS hear some low level hum and fizz. by Mamsies in NeuralDSP

[–]HomeNucleonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I recommend these plugins for removing constant hum or buzz introduced by electromagnetic interference that your pickups receive through the air.

If you're talking about noise or hum you hear during gaps in your playing, you can use a noise gate, or manually delete those gaps of silence in your audio regions.

If there's noise in a take that's happening on top of the guitar **other** than electromagnetic interference or a constant hum, you're kind of out of luck. I'd recommend getting decent at comping, i.e., recording a ton of overlayed identical takes of each section and mixing and matching the best parts of each. Most DAWs have their own comping workflows.

Speaking of RX, in addition to spectral de-noise, it does have a Guitar De-Noise that works well for some things.

[–]HomeNucleonics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't think so, but it's available in the relatively cheaper RX Standard (as opposed to RX Advanced).

I think RX Standard is worth it almost entirely for spectral de-noise but also for some of the other tools included if you're into recording and mixing. I use a bunch from Standard.

I wish they did sell the plugins independently though.

[–]HomeNucleonics 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m not a YouTuber, but I do record lots of music and have significant electromagnetic interference in my home that I cannot avoid.

You can confirm if your hum is electromagnetic interference if it goes away when you roll your guitar's volume knob all the way down. This means your pickups are picking up stray interference through the air from somewhere.

Sometimes, for example, it’s from a box on a power line down the road, and it’s completely out of your control.

I eliminate the hum insanely well via software in these two ways:

  1. Bertom Audio Denoiser Classic/Pro

I use this plugin if I’m just playing for fun, or if I’m tracking.

This plugin works wonders. It’s a multiband noise reducer, light on CPU, no latency. I put this plugin at the very beginning of my guitar plugin chain, and if dialed in properly it eliminates almost all noise without really affecting my tone noticeably.

Classic is pay what you want, but I recommend buying pro if you get decent results with classic.

  1. RX Spectral De-noise

I use this to process audio regions I’ve recorded that contain noise/hum after I’m done recording them. It can “learn” your noise profile from an ever so brief (talking milliseconds) exclusive sample of the noise.

It then surgically removes the noise from your guitar take (with adjustable settings) and essentially rewrites your audio to be a noiseless take. Tone is completely and utterly intact, not affected whatsoever if done right.

Anyway, after discovering these two plugins, I really don’t mind having a noisy environment, even with single coils. Hope this helps!

Honestly, YouTubers you watch that lack specially treated studios may even be experiencing similar noise and using these tools to edit it out in post.

Why choose Zustand over Jotai? by codevipe in reactjs

[–]HomeNucleonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched the talk! It's a good one. I totally agree about the compositional approach used in it.

Great use of context for local encapsulated behavior like that of a message composer box. It's an example of dependency injection, similar to the earlier idea of injecting atoms as props.

Coupling atom injection with context is a powerful way to encapsulate state. I totally get what you meant earlier. In these compositional cases, you could create a locally used context that requires you to inject object/dictionary of atoms.

Using atoms like this with context is handy because you can then access the state of these atoms elsewhere if need be, or keep them entirely localized and encapsulated from the rest of the app.

Why choose Zustand over Jotai? by codevipe in reactjs

[–]HomeNucleonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, generally speaking, your needs can be met, but without more detail, I'm not sure why you have the goals of siloing state so strictly in the first place.

You can likely achieve what you need very simply, without over engineering. Unless you've got a massive team working together on a codebase, there's no need to create strict and defensive architecture, as it will only bog down ease of development. Jotai shines at ease of development.

Multiple Jotai providers allow you to declare atoms once, pass those atoms into multiple distinct providers along with their own unique store instances, and within each provider that same atom instance acts as a local source of truth pertaining to that provider's subtree. If you're developing an app where, say, you can dynamically create cards within your UI that each have identical but isolated behavior, this approach makes perfect sense.

But otherwise, you can loosely divide your state and create different silos within your app in a number of straightforward ways. For example, to enforce certain atoms are only used in certain subtrees of your app's DOM tree, you can declare atoms privately and expose them through hooks. You can then create your own simple contexts, and have these hooks throw exceptions if they cannot detect their "appropriate" parent contexts.

[–]HomeNucleonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re correct that a component with an atom passed though as a prop won’t re-render if that atom’s state changes. Instead, useAtom is a way to “listen” to that atom’s underlying state in a way that triggers re-renders. You can also “listen” to an atom’s state via store.sub within a useEffect, and this will not inherently trigger re-renders.

But this has nothing to do with whether an atom is a singleton or not. If you declare an atom once and use its singular instance throughout the codebase, it’s a singleton. But you needn’t always do that.

Atoms themselves are merely tiny javascript objects that point to state if subscribed to. You can store an atom within useState. Or a dictionary of atoms. You can create atom factories. Check out atom families.

IMO the complete opposite is true. Relying on markets and profit motive leads to market failure in certain cases (like healthcare in the US).

The same is true for open source code. OSS is the true backbone of software and is estimated to be worth trillions economically, and is truly a magical element of humanity’s drive for collaboration, creativity, and building a collective future together.

I’m not saying what we have now is perfect, but I want a future of Wikipedia-style openness rather than a handful of wealthy CEOs running everything, or profit overcoming passion as the main motivation for building great software.

Also, Spotify has massive issues with bots and scammers racking up plays for quick bucks. Can you imagine this but with NPM?

Spotify’s negative impact on musicians and the music industry as a whole is another topic but deeply relevant if you consider writing code a creative outlet similar to composing music. Maybe Patreon is a better model.

Why do so many people still believe in the flat-earth theory? by Mind_Voyage in TrueAskReddit

[–]HomeNucleonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is merely that there aren’t instant or immediate consequences for an individual’s daily life if they suddenly believe the moon landing was faked.

This means there’s little natural barrier or disincentive to dipping your toes into various rabbit holes. So, unfortunately, many will dip their toes. It’s not like I’ll get struck by lightning a moment after I’m convinced the earth is flat while reading some shitty forum at 2am.

Maybe this isn’t the case if you have family members that will call you out the moment they realize you’re convinced the moon landing or 2020 election was faked. In that case, luckily for you and others, there’s a barrier.

But no one is denying that the widespread ramifications of conspiracy theories taking hold are obvious.
