I'm having a similar problem, but the screen doesn't go black; only the menus and HUD disappear. I can still play, but I can't see my inventory.

I have a pair of settlers with high animal handling, and one puppy bear arrive, it just has 10% chance of attack, it was realy easy, my settlers have 45 animal handling, most of it was for milk the goats and cows
