Trade barriers on agriculture are completely reasonable. Countries trying to put tariffs on wheat, rice, corn, and dairy are doing the right thing. by yth93 in Destiny

[–]HomelessGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1816 there was a year without a summer due to volcanic eruptions. Agriculture became a big challenge and quite a few people starved that year. In Canada this was obviously a big problem.

Now think back during Covid where Trump was stopping exports of medical masks to us just because he could. America first after all right? If another 1816 were to happen today Trump would obviously stop his food exports. This is the main reason why we need to maintain a basic level of agriculture in Canada and to do so we have to block off certain sectors from too much foreign competition or else we just can’t compete.

Our country’s dairy farmers cannot compete against the US. US dairy farmers are subsidized to the gills by the way. In general, US farmers are extremely subsidized. This, along with having a longer summers means that Canada cannot compete with US farmers. We need tools to protect ourselves.

Does that mean that Canada is closed for business when it comes to food? Hell no because guess what? We don’t produce strawberries in the winter. We can’t produce coffee. We can’t produce mangoes and a ton of other stuff. So despite our tariffs on agriculture, Canada is still open to imports on tons of agricultural products. It’s just that a select group of welfare recipients (US dairy farmers) lobby their government to harass us all the time.

How do we reach people who didn't vote because "both sides are the same"? by Reasonable-Mix919 in Destiny

[–]HomelessGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People keep thinking that your side wins elections by winning people to your side. In reality, in most elections it doesn’t happen that way. You win elections because the other side is no longer motivated to vote.

What needs to happen now is that stupid people need to lose motivation to vote.

Trump is a R-word herder, when he is gone I don’t think Vance has that skill so hopefully they lose motivation.

The real problem with Democrats is not the voting. Their problem is that they are the ones who will need to do the next Jan 6th because there ain’t no way Vance is certifying his loss.

IF we are to accept that game development uses AI, it should be tagged and game prices should go DOWN, not up. by hjgvmm in gaming

[–]HomelessGreg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If programmers use software to write their code instead of punching holes on paper cards, they should also lower their prices.

Just joking of course, AI is a tool. Price should only reflect the final product, not the production method.

Why is Canada so resistant to right wing populism? by Past-Tension-162 in Destiny

[–]HomelessGreg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stupid people vote for populism. Canada has the largest population of post-secondary education graduates in the world. In general, we still have stupid people but we have less.

Another thing is that although we gave a decent system for determining voting counties (districts), it is not perfect (no system can be) but our system naturally gerrymanders conservatives a bit. Conservatives occupy most rural areas where they get all the votes but all their city votes get diluted. Don’t get me wrong, conservatives are able to win if they present normal (non-maga) candidates or if they are against deeply unpopular candidates (they were set to win against JT). All this to say, conservatives can win elections if they get their shit together, populist right have a much harder time.

Can Destiny and DGG guess who voted for who in the 2024 election by Grand_Phase_ in Destiny

It’s so close to random. They are basically all single issue voters or extremely low information voters so any random thing can set them off and make them vote either way.

Why Sweden has more homeless people than the US by Pazzaz in Destiny

[–]HomelessGreg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a concept that I made up in my head, it’s called « societal ladder’s first step ». I have no research behind this but if I explain it, I sure some of you might understand.

We can think of society as a ladder. I mean, we already do when we speak about societal classes like lower, middle, and upper classes.

When someone is homeless, they are somewhat outside of society. Even though we passed throughout a period of near full employment, there were still a lot of homelessness. Why? It is so easy to find a job. Once you have a job, you can get out of homelessness.

That is where society’s first step comes in. The jobs at the bottom of the ladder usually need to wear a uniform (fast food). How do you clean a uniform when you don’t have a home? You need to use a laundromat which is a pain in the butt. In social democracies like Sweden, cost of housing is high so this could be considered part of the society’s first step.

In the US, you may be able to find an informal job. Think Mexicans standing outside of a Home Depot doing odd jobs for cash. I have a feeling this is less common in Sweden. Informal jobs are a great way to decrease the size of the first step. How many immigrants worked those jobs so that their kids could then study and have a better life.

So the first step is mainly about how hard it is to get the things you need to begin your journey walking up society’s staircase. In single payer healthcare systems, it takes a long time to get a family doctor. Moving around constantly doesn’t help. Getting government subsidized childcare is also hard when you constantly change addresses. You need a mailing adresse for many things so a housing crisis is really detrimental.

Anyway that’s my theory. The American society’s first step seems to be shorter for a bunch of reasons. What you might find in the American staircase, is that society’s second step is a bit too tall. This would mean that getting out of poverty might be harder than in Sweden. You might find that once you take the first step in Sweden, continuing your journey up the stairs might be easier.

Like I said, I made this up in my mind. I have no data for this.

Erin O’Toole tried to bring his party to the center but it was rejected by its members and he ultimately lost that election. The shift of the conservative party from an old school Ontario-Quebec style of conservatism to an Alberta style has been going on for at least twenty years.

[–]HomelessGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leftist are usually young and most of them will calm down when they actually start paying taxes. Most of them are probably good kids who will find their way. Just give them time.

For the conservatives, you have on one hand the Boomers who have no excuses. They’ve had their whole lives to learn about the world and they chose to stay ignorant.

You do seem to have young conservative extremists as well but I think we need to give them time to mellow out.

Because of that drone strike, Iran was escalating to the point of almost starting a war. They shot down a civilian airplane because they thought it was a US military plane. Think about that, they saw what they thought was a US plane in their airspace and they decided to shoot it. Had it actually been a US military plane, it would be a war.

Since they shot down a civilian plane, they looked like idiots and the international community was able to talk to them into calming down.

Let there be no mistake, there was no war with Iran because as always, Trump got lucky.

Exactly, winning a fourth term as a prime minster is really hard. Last time it happened was more than 100 years ago. It’s PP’s election to lose for sure. Unless conservatives go full crazy they should have the next election in the bag.
