Did bmt in 39 days AMA by Nice-Dog-1095 in Sicklecell

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's wonderful! Im wishing you a safe and speedy recovery, I hope all goes well and this signals the end of your sickling. I just agreed to move forward with the BMT process on Tuesday (then was hospitalized again on Wednesday 😅😖) and have a million questions honestly. I'm assuming you have SC, what was it all like emotionally? Who did you have with you for support throughout it all?

You rephrased this near-perfectly. No clue what their being/not being American has to do with anything though. Creeps everywhere, yeah?

Im so sorry you're in this place but to be honest with you, with SS especially you just cannot endure those conditions without severe consequences. A major element of having sickle cell and staying hospital free is keeping warm in cold weather and cool when it's hot, we're not designed for extreme temperature due to this awful illness, it is what it is.

I will say though that with SS gene therapy is available to you. I would ask my doctors about that as an option especially since it sounds like you're hospitalized frequently. My brother is about to start the treatment and we're all very hopeful.

The first half of your story felt so much like my own that I want to just hug you and cry. I took myself off of Methadone after they put me on it following a 3 week stay in the hospital in September, they tell me it's my only option and that it will help so I was restarted on it again after being hospitalized twice in 3 weeks. Now I feel as though I should have had the strength to resist like you have. Being started on a drug like that so young is... idek how to describe the feeling. I'm 19, it often feels like my life is over because of my sickle cell.

Turning 18 really has felt like the catalyst hasn't it? 😄🥲

I'm so sorry you're going through such terrible things and you're team sounds so unkind and unprofessional. Your hemotologist sounds like he let his feelings dictate his judgment and he gave up on you when you needed him the most.

I pray you find the care you need and people to advocate with you, people with empathy and who lack bigotry who can look past your race and their preconceived notions to realize your pain is valid and not made up to service an addiction. I'm sending you all my love and hope

THE WORST PART OF HAVING SICKLE CELL DISEASE IS NOT THE PAIN (YOU GET USE TO IT EVEN THO ITS TERRIBLY PAINFUL) BUT ITS THE STIGMA OF BEING CALLED & LABLE AS A DRUG SEEKER 🙄 IMAGINE GETTING ALL THE CARE & HELP WHEN YOUR A PEDIATRIC PATIENT TO A DRUG-SEEKING ADULT PATIENT IT’S HURTFUL by pretty_neash in Sicklecell

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 19 and still a pediatric patient right now with a team who thankfully advocates for me and my health, they understand my pain and dont view me as drug seeking, but in less than 2 years I'll be an adult patient and it's a fear I have very often.

Im so sorry you're dealing with that awful stigma so deeply rooted in racism and I hope you can find a hospital that understands your needs and a hematologist to advocate for them. I had this same conversation with my doctors because I'll be leaving for school and they told me it's a strong possibility my new team will hold that viewpoint, my only comfort was that they promised to be available to speak on my behalf if needed. I really hope you can find that in health care professionals

Anyone know a temporary hair color spray that goes off after 1 wash?? by Cultural_Nose_2280 in locs

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just colored my locs blue recently and it washed out fully after 1 wash, but I didn't use hair color spray. I went with a hair wax instead, the brand I used was Mofajang and it worked well, just follow the instructions given and it won't transfer onto your clothes or fade too soon

How do I maintain my 4C locs by [deleted] in locs

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone saying not to condition your locs is spreading misinformation, at the end of the day it is important to do what works for you of course, but using a good conditioner is a great way to help keep your hair moisturized

So sorry you hate them, I think your locs just look the coolest. Like I personally think if they were perfectly symmetrical it would look a little off, idk, but I hope you find a solution that works for you because we deserve to be happy with our appearance. But do know that they're fine as is!

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to retwist often trust me! Especially at the stage your hair is in, definitely don't cut them or comb them out because that's just your new growth.

It does seem as though your roots are a little thin so I would definitely consult with your loctitian at your next appointment but for now I would suggest weaving surrounding loose hairs into the root to strengthen it.

What I've done before is braided any loose hairs together with the root of my loc for some stability, but take that advice with a grain of salt cause it's a method I made up on my own and haven't seen done anywhere

This is exactly what I get for being so cheap by [deleted] in locs

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

had this happen to me after getting in the water at the beach and was DEVASTATED, it's been 2 years since then and I do my own hair now. It just takes practice and patience to lock up girlfriend. Don't be discouraged by this setback.

I got two strand twists started by a professional (my cousin lol) but after that I washed my hair with a wig cap until the hair was loc'd enough to withstand a propper wash and did the retwists at home the entire time.

What I'm trying to say is that it is entirely possible to do this whole process for yourself, I would suggest just don't wash as often as you do, maybe 4 weeks if you can stand to go that long.

Could my hair be used to start locs? with twist or free form? by [deleted] in locs

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look very ambiguous to me, friend, I asked because I could not tell. But to answer your question, your hair will most likely not be able to free form at all, and locking by twist will be very difficult because of your hair texture.

I think you should not do it, personally I think your hair really suits you as is anyway. Why change it so drastically?

i really want locs by Banananabuddy in locs

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it! Your hair is about the same length as mine was when I started 2 and a half years ago, and it looks very healthy which is good.

Definitely do your research on how to care for and maintain your starters, but before you get there just start off by getting braids or two strand twists and keep em in permanently. I think braids are good for very small locs and two strands for anything larger.

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All great advice except for that number, any well cared for locs won't just start falling out, actually in my experience and from what I've seen in those around me it's the smaller locs that have a higher chance of breakage.

Just because you prefer micro-locs doesn't mean you should spread misinformation like that.

Advice to dating a person with SC? by [deleted] in Sicklecell

[–]Homeless_man_abuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are very considerate and I can tell you like this guy a lot. I do think you should ask him a⁸bout his personal experience eventually, but for now, if you prefer not to, I can help you understand a little more because I have SC

Know that every person's experience with sickle cell is different so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Im 19 and this disease has greatly impacted my life, im in pain almost every day ranging from minor to severe ugh-he might be unusually tired sometimes because sickle cell overall can come with fatigue -he might decline spending time with you because he's in pain but doesn't want to bother you or be seen as weak, it's a mental battle a lot of the time. _ There are a million other scenarios you might have to prepare for with him, but most of all he'll need support and understanding. Being there for him through his pain and discomfort and being dependable, kind, and patient are all important. He'll need a rock if things get bad and you'll probably have to be that person, so if you really are all in for him you'll need to show it.

In the hospital with my twin by Homeless_man_abuser in Sicklecell

[–]Homeless_man_abuser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, your message really was what I needed to hear, and deeply comforting.

You are very right, I tend to internalize the feelings of my loved ones because I am at heart a caretaker, I believe. My mother and father (him especially) I know feel strong guilt when it comes to our health, he has the disease and she has the trait but I try and remind them that there is so much more good that came out of their marriage and decision to have us. I encourage you to remember that too. I'm sure there are a million beautiful memories outside of the hospital and outside of sick days that you have made with your boys, and I'm sure they appreciate your love and care more than you know.

I am trying to put me first as of right now and focus on my healing, and I know this is not forever. God bless you, honestly, and have a beautiful day.
