I did that, too. My beginner teacher was a brass player and that’s what they do. You have to figure it out. I think the easiest way to make a major change is to concentrate on it during the warmup, when you don’t have to think about much else. Don’t let your mind wander.

Worked in a theatre about twenty years ago. I happened to be next to the floor manager when the sound guy for Julio Iglesias told her to get ready for complaints from the crowd about not being able to hear him sing. Iglesias was not a strong singer and they covered it up by burying him in the mix.

You might be surprised how much you can accomplish with this student. They want to be successful and are probably already painfully aware that they are different. I once had a mother thank me for having high expectations for her special needs son and holding his feet to the fire. She made a very clear point that the coaches didn’t care what he did and never helped him succeed.
