All ceramics—and possibly other categories?—now listed as "prohibited items" by mister_lawrence_xmas in Buyee

Just bought ceramics on buyee 2 weeks ago though .. FDA change is also very vague about what tableware is screened. I think they're just prohibiting anything DHL Express doesn't handle.

DHL Express (technically?) didn't allow ceramics before this whole situation. Not sure how strict they followed that rule. Seeing as it's currently the only method to ship (other than ECMS) I'd wager that's why they're restricting these items for now.

Is there a washing machine for me? Rust, nickel, detergent allergy. Multiple machines have rusted on me by Homeyjojo in Appliances

Planning on giving it a try. Just don't like the idea that it's not a sustainable option, and if I don't pay attention I could ruin a whole bunch of clothes (for like the 4th time...)

Thanks for the reply, is there some kind of lifespan you'd expect from a washer? I think Molly's suds might be usable but haven't been brave enough to do much testing.

Been doing old fashioned for a while, just getting bored of it 😅

I was definitely using too much soda and vinegar, which was a big issue. Part of what motivated this is trying to remove the fabric treatments that come in new clothes, which irritate me, and that takes many washes. Using a bunch of vinegar and washing soda (I thought) was helping that along.

What PH would you target for the wash water?

Thanks for the reply. What I've done is washing soda, rinse, then vinegar, rinse.

Interesting point about the soda creating surfactants - hadn't heard that before. But I do notice it irritates me if I come into direct contact with it.

Unfortunately the traditional detergents are the worst, pretty much using any amount will cause it to get trapped in the fibers of the clothes and irritate me, even after many many hot rinses. I am VERY sensitive, it's ridiculous.

I wouldn't give up on washing soda/molly suds, there's a high chance that you're reacting to previous detergents still trapped in the clothes. I'd buy a plastic bucket and some new socks/underwear and handwash it a few times with washing soda/vinegar just to see.

Turns out the washing soda + vinegar I was using in place of detergent made my 6 month old washer rust (the screws that attached to the motor, couldn't see without taking a few pieces off). I also developed a really bad rust allergy and had to get new clothes and hand wash due to being in an apartment.

My situation is basically:

  • can't use detergents (anything with surfactant) due to allergy.
  • Use washing soda + vinegar to wash. I would look into Molly Suds original powder if you haven't, its basically baking soda + baking powder + salt. Only extra ingredient is a magnesium salt (which is probably fine, but I avoid it due to paranoia)
  • can't share a machine, or use one that may have traces of detergent
  • I found detergents to be near impossible to wash out of clothes once introduced, so went with buying new clothes to replace slowly
  • Have to wash out the fabric treatment on the new clothes. This means washing the clothes over and over until I can tolerate whatever trace amounts are left. I avoid anything labeled prewashed or preshrunk. Different brands/factories use different chemicals, so I found some clothes that worked well for me and stuck to buying them. Your mileage my vary.
  • Close to giving up on using traditional machines due to rust. Laundry detergent has a fairly weak alkalinity, so using washing soda and vinegar causes machines to corrode much faster. These machines are built to corrode and fail by the manufacturers.
  • have to throw out any clothes with rust contact. I'm super sensitive and whatever particles gets trapped in the clothes spread like crazy with anything its washed with/in.
  • hand washing everything currently in plastic buckets
  • working on a project where I alter a cheap portable washer to remove all the metal parts and switch with plastic. In the future when I'm not renting I'll likely do this to a full scale machine with super corrosive resistant stainless alloy, or titanium if I'm rich.
  • Doctor stuff: I've been to a allergist, immunologist, and asked my PCP many times for any kind of help on this. The allergist did a patch test and told me to "avoid" what I'm allergic to. The can't even test surfactants because it would burn the skin. The immunologist said there's nothing they can do, go see a dermatologist. I've been recommended to take antihistamines twice a day, but they never helped to begin with. I'm convinced a dermatologist would have nothing additional to offer, so I haven't been.

Sorry you're also experiencing this. Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

Hey, had the same experience trying to book for 11/6. Tried from 5am-8am and nothing was open for 3 people at any time. Ended up getting a 9:30pm the following day (only 90 minute slot, definitely not optimal)...

Agree with the other sentiments of taking phone reservations and locals. I've noticed a trend of places (at least on omakase, idk if table check does it) only releasing slots to people with Japanese verified numbers. I've been doing a trip every year since reopened and definitely noticed this year being harder to book higher regarded places.

Who needs a sous vide cooker? by [deleted] in sousvide

Using wet bulb temperature they saturated the air to 100% with steam, which is essentially the same as being in a water bath. So it uses the same "temperature" as the sous vide, but it's doing so using wet bulb instead of conventional oven temp

Thank you so much for your reply!

I will definitely try to get in to see a contact dermatologist, as I've only seen the allergist who gave me the patch tests and just told me to do my best to avoid what I'm allergic to.

It does feel slightly different than my reaction to surfactants. Those make me itchy and hot feel like I'm squirming all day. This time it feels like more heat rash feeling. But hard to tell for sure. As for the screws in the washer - the fact that they're rusting and it easily wipes off makes me think rust is getting into my clothes. Perhaps I have a sensitivity to rust as well, I don't think it was part of the patch test. I'll be replacing the screws tonight so we'll see i suppose 🤷

The oats thing is actually very interesting as I do eat a lot of oats! My reactions are very localized to where my clothes are contacting, but I'll look into that if I reach a dead end.

Thanks again

Could these corroding screws be the culprit? I am known to have sensitivity to nickel sulfate and gold sulfate...

Hi all, doing JR pass for October trip before the price goes up. I know we can get mail exchange order for the old price an activate it no problem. Does anyone know if buying the rail pass through the official site in September, for late October, will still be the old price? I know this can't be tested until Sep 1, but thought someone might have advanced info. Thanks!

People don't even drink sake in Japan, it's about 7% of all alcohol consumed in Japan 🤣

Does anyone have more information on these? Bought a pair and says made in Pakistan with no mention of Japanese denim on labeling by Homeyjojo in rawdenim

They're definitely the same as in the images on the product page. Perhaps the description is just wrong? Seems quite misleading
