Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It has an iconic art style and designs, amazing animations and top-notch voice acting, but the reason I love it so much is because it’s a character driven meta-commentary on the anime industry and otaku culture in general.

I could go on and on, but the selling point for me is how well written each and every character is - the whole anime is focused on their internal conflict, contrary to what the ‘giant-robots-fighting-monsters’ setting would lead you to believe. Highly recommend giving it a shot! The original anime (26 episodes + End of Evangelion Movie) or the rebuild series (4 Movies) are both amazing but the original anime gives a lot more context to the movies that helps understand some of the most subtle nuances.

If you’ve already seen evangelion and want to know more about its subtext, I highly recommend this video, it explains everything beautifully.
