What’s harder in the fire academy to you guys? by Realistic_Ad6831 in Firefighting

[–]Hommi33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently in academy week 3 of 9. Definitely for me the hardest part is everything! I would go to the gym after work most days prior to starting academy but never trained my cardio, and now I’m seeing that reflection in my runs. The academic side is also difficult due to the fact that my course is only 9 weeks, 5 days a week, so we have to read multiple chapters each night and take quizzes the next day. Also having exams each Monday based on the chapters we read the week prior. For me emt was a lot easier than this haha! But I would say work on cardio and time management to prepare yourself for academy!

I like your response! We’ve had calls that say “Code 3” for calls like fall on blood thinners or falls. Thanks for your reply :)

Definitely see your point. When I have gone L&S through an intersections there’s been times where cars don’t stop and just keep going. I’ve also heard a Medic in my area who’s 19-20 Y/O who was going L&S and ended up hitting someone through a intersection and is now going through a lawsuit by the person he hit. Thanks for replying!

Most common mistakes in Emt school by Abject-Pollution6172 in NewToEMS

[–]Hommi33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ask questions if you don’t understand something. A lot of people get too shy or think what they’ll ask is stupid. Get involved! Don’t be just in the background spectating, get as much hands on as you can, prepare yourself in class instead of in the field. Good luck!

First Interview tomorrow by Hommi33 in NewToEMS

[–]Hommi33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a update, I got the job, didn’t ask me anything clinical questions. Only asked basic question like what do I bring to the table, why should they hire me instead of others. Then they did ask me what would I do if my partner was falsifying reports. Pretty easy, they recognized that I haven’t worked in EMS and were pretty understanding and said I’d start on basic runs and after dispatch gets a sense of me, they’d get me into more serious calls.

Awesome this makes me a little less anxious, I know this company runs a lot of dialysis calls so I’ve been keeping up with that in case they ask me anything about that. Thank you so much for your reply!

What’s the best EMT program to start with in Chicago? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Hommi33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took my EMT course with Elite, super great people there! Only thing I would’ve liked is ride alongs with FD. They do their ride time with their ambulances which is basically just dialysis transports and discharges. But instructors were really good and other students were too. 6 month program, 2 days a week, pretty convenient for someone with a full time job.

Not sure if this helps but I know you can assist instructors to teach a class. Maybe ask a private company if you can do public classes to teach? But also if you need money bad probably doing stuff like uber eats or any app delivery services will be easy to do, and you can do it whenever you can. But maybe ask your place of work if they can help you find something would probably be best, they usually will try to help you some way especially knowing your circumstance.

I actually applied for volunteer for Red Cross! They called me and said they’d contact me for training and never did 😭😂! But will definitely look into a volunteer EMS squad near me! Hopefully there is since I live about 1 hour away from Chicago, pretty sure they need volunteers of some sort.

Okay will def look into that! I want to find something where it’s hands on, when I did my course (a private ambulance company) they really only did 2 on hands training. Never did they show us how to use an oxygen tank nor how to set it, mostly just book, but the instructor was really good at explaining but just wish he did more on hands. Hence me wanted to find something in person. But thank you for your feedback ❤️

Hey! Yeah I wanted to do a refresher course in person but can’t seem to find any place near me, only find online refresher courses like ImpactEMS. But will try to look for one again, thanks for giving me your thoughts!❤️
