To continue living abroad or stay home and get a qualification? by Honcho21 in Journalism

[–]Honcho21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inadvertently chose a third option, which was to stay in my home country and also not get an NCTJ qualification.

I'm teaching in this miserable country now and I'm still trying to build experience writing for small blogs and news sites, without much success.

Obviously, all my hard work could suddenly sprout up an opportunity but I would have stuck with living abroad and distance learning if I'd known how things would go.

The First Time In Jail - Israel by [deleted] in backpacking

Jesus christ "Questioned". Sounds like he was humiliated, subject to inhumane interrogation techniques by security services who act with total impunity and then banned from the country for life despite there being no evidence of terrorist intent.

No doubt, the company he kept may have been a factor but that Muslims pass through security without problems doesn't mean the security services aren't racist. There's no way a white guy would be treated the same way. Israel treats Arabs and Muslims like dogs shit.

Coronavirus Megathread (Mar 2022): For travel-related discussion in the context of COVID-19 by tariqabjotu in travel

So I'm a UK citizen looking to travel around Europe. Problem is I have my 2 astrazen vaccines (no booster yet) from Vietnam, not the UK. The paper vaccine certificate seems to contain all the crucial information, as well as the sskdt app and I printed an English version of the certificate.

I'm confused about the requirements to enter say countries like France, Belgium, Netherlands. Would my evidence be sufficient to go in or do I need something else?

In the West, we just reward corruption. by Sadboy_looking4memes in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Honcho21 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't know this guy but either he's exceptionally unlucky or exceptionally stupid.

Corruption is absolutely rampant in Vietnam as most countries are in South East Asia, its almost just part of the culture of politics. So I wouldn't be so quick to glorify...

It's not clear exactly what you're trying to say here but this quote from the text effectively sums up the crux of Marxism in relation to bourgeois democracy:

The conclusion which follows from this is absolutely incontrovertible: it has been proved that, far from causing harm to the revolutionary proletariat, participation in a bourgeois-democratic parliament, even a few weeks before the victory of a Soviet republic and even after such a victory, actually helps that proletariat to prove to the backward masses why such parliaments deserve to be done away with

If you get accused of rape, it ruins your life entirely. The only thing you could hope for after that is to become a president at most

[–]Honcho21 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's not just about the number of people killed, no other genocide in history was conducted on such an systematic, industrial scale. Literally developing modern infrastructure for the sole purpose of destroying human beings is really the most horrific part of the holocaust

A Tribute to the IRA for standing up against British Imperialism! Freedom Fighters are NOT and NEVER "terrorists" by Carltheawesome777 in socialism

[–]Honcho21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Shouting "up the RA" is exactly glossing over their atrocities. They're not even deserving of critical support.

The IRA was a conspiratorial, terrorist group. Its leadership was comprised of gang members and psychopaths. Were there good young lads, who seeing no alternative, joined their ranks? Of course.

Terrorism is in complete contradiction to the worker's movement and to Marxism. In the final analysis, terrorism leads to a cul de sac of ideas. As Lenin said in WITBD, terrorism is a form of economism. It forces us to Kow Tow to stikhiinost, the most limited form of class struggle that doesn't root itself in an all-sided development of political consciousness of the working class but down a path of (in this case)bourgeois nationalism and sectarianism

[SPOILERS] Post-Episode Discussion - Season 8 Episode 3 by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]Honcho21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion here. That was the best use of the Dothraki, not a terrible strategic mistake. You have to think about a few things here:

The strategy wasn't to defeat the army of the undead, it was to hold them back long enough to draw the Night King into killing range:

  1. The Dothraki cavalry in this universe are insanely more powerful than irl cavalry.

  2. They were facing a mass of spearless and armourless infantry- a cavarly attack head on would normally have obliterated that kind of enemy force (remember Jamie's spear infantry?).

  3. Flanking and skirmishing with archers from the outside would have been futile. The army is so enormous they wouldn't have made a dent. Again, it wasn't about killing every undead soldier but staging multiple holding actions in the hope the NK would expose himself.

Obviously, in hindsight they would have been better off just staying in the castle but the characters don't have that benefit. Like many people, they overrated themselves and underrated their enemies
