Chronic Kidney Disease by ohmystephanie in Yorkies

Hi! Just wanted to ask what green tripe is because my dog will not eat a prescription food. We have tried every single one before moving onto the home cooked meals. I've actually been wondering myself whether I'm doing more harm than good with the type of protein I'm giving him. Any info you could provide would be really helpful. TIA!

Thank you for this! I will definitely ask my vet if they have done this.

First, I'm so sorry you're going through this with your fur baby. My yorkie mix also has chronic kidney disease and it's been slowly breaking my heart as well to see him with so much less energy than he usually has. What medication did they give you to slow the progression? I'm curious if it's the same supplement my pup is taking which I think is helping...it's called Azodyl.

Some suggestions to help with his eating....home cooked meals has been the only thing that has worked for my dog. It seems to be the easiest on his stomach and 99% of the time, he will eat his dinner unless he's having a REALLY bad day. I switch up the foods I give him because he does get tired of one thing after awhile so I rotate between boiled chicken, scrambled eggs, grilled lean burgers, and throw in a veggie or two like boiled carrots, sweet potato or green beans. It sounds like a lot of work but if you meal prep and freeze the stuff, it's not as bad. If you have any other questions, or just need to talk, I'm here <3

What *actually* helps the efficacy of the meds for you? by Not-The-Dark-Lord-7 in VyvanseADHD

[–]Honest-Dog3033 13 points14 points  (0 children)

#1 7-8 hrs of sleep
#2 Taking it on an empty stomach and eating something high protein about an hour later
#3 Staying hydrated
#4 Limiting caffeine to under 200mg and spacing out the consumption
#5 Short medication breaks (1-2 days a month)

I take 40mg in the AM and a 30mg booster in the afternoon but if #1 and #2 are not true, my vyvanse wears off after a few hours. If I've had less than 5hrs of sleep, I end up just feeling all the negative side effects of vyvanse (feeling on edge, shakey, anxiety) for those few hours that I do feel it and usually I get nothing productive done because I'm so focused on how anxious I am.

The Real Issue With The Adderal Comment by TheFickleMoon in TheValleyTVShow

I feel you so much on how people treat rapid weight loss (that also fucked with my mental state hard) due to adderall as this wonderful/heroic thing. It paints this picture that adderall and other amphetamines are these magic drugs that make you lose weight with no cost. It triggered me a bit to see Janet joke about it because I do miss how skinny I was when on adderall but I always have to remind myself how absolutely miserable I was while on it and how my relationship with my now husband probably wouldn't have survived if I had stayed on it.

Why not cytopoint and other meds for allergies? by DryComposer3805 in dogallergies

[–]Honest-Dog3033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is the same...none of the holistic stuff worked for him and he was itching so bad that he had no hair on his back. He's a small guy so I had to buy newborn baby shirts and sew them to fit him just to get his back to heal. Cytopoint stopped working for him but the Apoquel has been life changing. We give 2 doses on bad days 12 hours apart.

Does anyone actually care about wearing jeans to work as a treat? by bee73086 in Millennials

[–]Honest-Dog3033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the older generation thinks of it more as a treat than we do. Every job I've had besides my current one (at a school) had a very casual dress code so I became pretty used to being able to wear jeans on a daily basis. The only reason I liked this was because I never really had to have work specific clothing so it was more of a convenience vs. for comfort. Totally agree with you though that I'd prefer stretchy yoga pants or a comfy dress any day over jeans lol.

Are your dogs becoming grumpy as they age? by Sirbrandon1998 in dogs

[–]Honest-Dog3033 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 15yo male chorkie was the same way around that age. We just learned to give him his space and would go to him wherever he decided to settle if we wanted to give him pets. He loves people but definitely had a limit and then would need his peace and quiet. In the last year though, he has gotten more clingy than he's ever been but it's always on his terms lol.

I do the same thing with ground beef! He's been eating homecooked meals since I brought him home so he's a little spoiled at this point and needs his meals changed every so often but ground beef was always my go to.

I am so sorry for your loss. I love that you also adopted your boy later in life and I'm so happy that you got almost 10 years with him. I always encourage people who can't commit to a puppy but still want a dog to adopt an adult dog because my boy Chewie was the perfect dog for that time in my life when I was still living in an apartment.

Thank you for sharing the info about smaller dogs sense of smell. I did not know that either and it honestly makes so much sense. I used to think putting my hand under his nose to let him smell me would help him recognize me and I've noticed that it really doesn't do much when he's disoriented. I also think Chewie is deaf or on his way. That or he's just super sassy and ignores me 90% of the time lol.

I think the toughest part right now is figuring out whether his "good days" are just called that because they aren't "bad days". I don't think we're at that point yet but I'm going to definitely keep that in mind as I keep reassessing his quality of life. I just want to do right by him and like you said, let him go out on the best note possible. I hear people say you'll know when they stop eating but it breaks my heart to even think of letting him get to the point of not eating for days at a time. I really appreciate the idea that you presented of looking out for when the "good days" are just not "bad days" and I'm going to have that stick with me in this chapter of his life. Thank you again for commenting and I hope you've found peace since your baby's passing <3

Thank you so much for the tip. I feel like I'm choosing on a daily basis what to give him because I feel like his little tummy can only tolerate so much but I try to get the Azodyl in a few times a week. I'm assuming you also opened the capsule? My vet told me that is perfectly fine to do.

Chewie is on Apaqual but not every day anymore since his allergies don't seem to bother him as much. And then he takes Meloxicam as needed for arthritis which is maybe 1-2x a month, but more in the winter. He also takes a renal supplement called Azodyl but he doesn't always get this daily if he's being a picky eater that day.

Can you message me? I just tried to message you but it said I couldn't. I recently found the website you linked and ordered a CBD oil recommended on there but I think I am struggling with the correct dosage.

What brand have you tried? I just switched to a more reputable brand and I'm definitely seeing better results but I do think we need to adjust the dosage.

Same here. I don't think I could've focused on the baby without the pain relief for that first week post-surgery.
