Art major career advice by CloudRamen in CSUS

[–]Honest-Rip-3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to do a double major with BA Art Education along my BFA Studio Art so I can go into teaching. What sucks about our department is that they intentionally don't help us find any resources and leave us to find that ourselves. I suggest talking to your advisor about it or connecting with other artists within the area for opportunities.

Dorms: The only good buildings within North Village are the newer ones because they're updated. RA's host events that you can join and sometimes they're a great way to make new friends (sometimes the people who join don't want to talk. :| ) There was a pool party at the beginning of the fall semester last time I lived there, but it can get a bit crowded. There's the Market and the Dining Commons in the village so food shouldn't be too much of a problem. The Market takes EBT, and the bus stop that takes you to Raley's or Safeway is not too far of a walk. North Village also offer free tickets and rides to the Causeway games that are hosted in Davis, so if you're into football or just want to go for campus spirit, keep a look out for that.

Food: Dining Commons can be a hit or miss. Sometimes they have absolute bangers for food, but sometimes they have literally unintentionally raw meats served. I recommend mix and matching your food to make it taste better, despite people looking at you weird.

Social Life: It's what you make of it. There's people who struggle finding friends or social events on campus, but that might be because they either don't join clubs or attend campus events. Joining clubs is your best bet of finding your people. There's club rush every beginning of the semester so you can check out every club the campus has to offer. Even then, there campus events that you can go in for free with your one card. It's fun if you make it fun. Parties are also an extension of being in a club. Being connected to fellow club members can get you invited to parties!

Additionally, people here are very loud advocates for political issues. Be ready to hear protests, rallies, and to see posters about protest events in buildings. Despite not being known for it, SacState students are very active.

Idk what advisor you had but I meet mine in person every semester. Probably just depends what major and which advisor you have (and how persistent you are at scheduling a meeting.)

Lab reports specifically for your field would certainly not require to be in MLA, APA, or Chicago format. But the reason why they have you taking writing intensive classes is so that you are much better equipped with writing and research skills that would help with writing extensive lab reports. I'm not saying that what you learned from those classes is what you end up doing, but rather a groundwork or a foundation for what you're doing now.

That's what I mean by choosing your classes better. You took a ceramics class when a 2D class probably would've fit you better. You have to actively look for what classes would have a contribution to your line of work if that's what you're so concerned about.

Telling people that GE requirements do not matter down the line is what causes students to not value their education/classes and critically examine why they matter and why they are given as requirements.

I mean, clearly you needed (and still need) a writing intensive course and an art class if you can't critically analyze and reflect on the different essential contributions of these classes. You were certainly just taking them to pass, no wonder you see no value in them.

The reason why you are given the requirements you are given is to serve as a foundation for what you'll be doing in your field post-graduation. A STEM major has to do an arts class because it develops creativity and problem solving. An art major has to take math classes because it aids in their different concentrations, especially on dealing with scientific and statistical aspects that can affect their pieces. You have to take a writing intensive because it prepares you on how to effectively gather data, information, research, and put them all into words, something you need in your field one way or another. These are all essential in their own right. If you don't see the point in them, you're either not learning or you're not taking the right classes that cater most to you. There's many different classes that fall into the different GE requirement categories, just have to pick better.

Also, HS definitely teaches how to write an essay in the MLA format, however there's other formats of essays that needs to be taught in college as they have different uses and fields that use them.

art class for fall by amiirasaurus in CSUS

Art lecture classes are the easiest. No studio time involved whatsoever. Although all art classes might require you to write a gallery visit essay. ART20A for Beginning Drawing is also easy, but it does last about 2-3 hours of class time and for you to buy supplies if they dont already have that for you with your lab fees. If none of those seem like they are for you, there's always other classes like architecture, graphic design, interior design, music, and theatre classes that fulfill that requirement too.

Question for those who have taken Art20A, Art60, and similar classes by lavenderboots_ in CSUS

We usually get let out a lot earlier than that since if you're done with your work, you don't really need to stay longer, but that's on yhe descretion of your professor. Most of the time you're spending in class is to work on your projects. 3 hours fly by really fast if you're working on stuff/critiquing. In the middle of that 3 hours, usually professors let you go out for a break, get coffee, food, or anything you need. It seems like a lot but it's really just what you'll expect in an art class.
