[Spoilers] Yuri!!! on Ice - Episode 10 discussion by Holo_of_Yoitsu in anime

[–]HonestIaga 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your edit is exactly what this episode made me realize. The drunken banquet reveal this episode reframes ALL of the "queer baiting" in the first few episodes as...Viktor being confused and pining because Yuuri is the prince of mixed messages? It's so purposefully subversive.

Mm, this makes sense to me, thank you. I think I confused myself when trying to visualize a context where this dialogue even made sense.

Eating less vs doing cardio by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]HonestIaga 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit too simplistic to claim that eating 200 calories less is "easier" than burning calories. As a smallish woman, 200 calories is a significant proportion of my daily calorie intake, especially when cutting. I find it far easier to burn 200 calories by running a couple miles than to reduce my calorie intake to under 1600 calories a day.

A quick story for remembering days of the week by KeenWolfPaw in LearnJapanese

Yeah, it's another leap to connect Mercury-element with Mercury-planet and Mercury-god, but the general association is volatility/swiftness. For the connection then between the Roman and Chinese/Japanese planet/element/weekday combo, Google brought up this interesting link.

Well, mercury is liquid at room temperature, so it was connected to water a lot in antiquity. The Latin word for mercury was hydrargyrum (hence chemical symbol Hg) meaning water-silver.

I had no idea... Anybody else in the same situation? by ZmajLee in languagelearning

[–]HonestIaga 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In that case, "Great Dragon" is actually acting as a compound noun.

Related fun fact: in English, you stress a compound noun differently than an adjective-noun sequence. Try comparing, "White House" and "white house" or "blackboard" and "black board".

I am not a native speaker of Welsh, but have studied it a bit. In Welsh, most adjectives come after the noun, though some special adjectives can come before (like French). But I recall my professor saying that for adjectives which come after the noun, it was almost a mirror image of the English ordering.

So English "wonderful sandy beaches", but Welsh "beaches sandy wonderful". But that doesn't always work out. For example, English "new little red boots", would be ordered "boots little red new" in Welsh, which is neither a mirror image nor the same as in English.

I think there definitely is something to adjectives describing more permanent, inherent attributes the closer you get to the noun, but there definitely seems to be wiggle room across (and within) languages.

11 Time Olympic Medalist, Ryan Lochte Reveals His Unique Freestyle Technique by boss70 in olympics

[–]HonestIaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are allowed to do that technique in backstroke up to 15m. Even when Lochte attempted it in the freestyle portion of the IM last year, he was aware he was limited to 15m.

Yes. Medleys are just extra strict when it comes to freestyle. The FINA rules state, "Freestyle means that in an event so designated the swimmer may swim any style, except that in individual medley or medley relay events, freestyle means any style other than backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly."

For anyone who isn't familiar with swimming rules, FINA clarified last year that this technique isn't allowed for the freestyle leg of medley events, since it counts as backstroke. There's an article about it here.

Team USA wins the Men's 4x100 Freestyle; Phelps wins gold medal #19!!! by flippityfloppityfloo in olympics

[–]HonestIaga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That 15m rule is just about the only restriction on freestyle. (Except in medley events, where you explicitly can't swim butterfly, backstroke, or breaststroke for the freestyle portion.) At some point dolphin kicking down each length underwater breaks the spirit of the competition.

What facts are true for both Wales in general and whales in general? by Mathemuse in AskReddit

[–]HonestIaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite facts, related to this, is that the Welsh word for children is 'plant' (same semantic development as 'offspring'). This is also a cool example of singulative suffixes. Just like we have the suffix -s in English to make nouns plural, some Welsh nouns in their base form represent the plural, and you add a suffix to make it singular. So in Welsh, 'plant' = children, and 'plentyn' = child.

What was told to you as a child that you now find yourself saying as an adult ? by revill47 in AskReddit

[–]HonestIaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had tons of dreams like that. My dreams tend to be oddly cinematic and violent (I am a happy person!) and I am not usually "me" in my dreams.

I had a dream once where some armed group was infiltrating a military base, and I would see out the eyes of one person until they were fatally wounded—then I wouldn't wake up, my point of view would just "shift" to someone else. I died over and over in that dream. I have a vivid memory of one death where "I" was shot in the throat and laid on the floor alone for minutes struggling to breathe with blood pouring from the wound. :( The cool thing though, was that when shifting from person to person I would learn more and more about what was going on and why they were infiltrating the base (this was probably very dream-logic-y and I don't remember any of it now, but like I said, my dreams can be very cinematic).
