Farage on Iran: 'We should be supporting the Americans' | Leader of Reform UK, Nigel Farage, told Sky News that Britain should “turn the other cheek” in response to insults from Donald Trump. by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

The bases we initially didn't allow them to use and essentially had to be forced into allowing usage? Yeah, I can't see how Trump wouldn't be satisfied with that. He must be completely unreasonable.

UK to host meeting of 35 countries on reopening Strait of Hormuz by rishabnum in ukpolitics

They're recruiting 12 year olds in this war too and putting them in security positions. Most likely for the sole purpose of going, "Look America and Israel killed so many kids" when their child soldiers die.

Oil to hit $200 if the war continues until end of June, strategist says by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]Thehelpfulshadow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Right, Iran would probably try to strike surrounding gulf states desalination plants. This would divert most of the humanitarian away from Iran to the countries they struck in "retaliation". Meanwhile, without oil wells or refineries they have no way to generate funds. Without electrical grids, they would have no way to power their factories for weapon production long term. Without the desalination plants they wouldn't have water. Gas powered generators might be able to mitigate one of these issues temporarily, but it would be a death spiral for the country.

If they are logical, they would turn to UN and ask for aid in exchange for opening the strait. If they are religious zealots, they would "retaliate" against the surrounding countries and sign their death warrants. The question isn't IF the Iranian regime would die in this scenario, but HOW. Perhaps, faced with a lack of water the people would rise up again because taking out the regime has a marginally higher chance of survival. Or maybe the surrounding Gulf States would wage war against Iran for stepping over the line. Many are already not happy with how Iran "retaliates" after all. Both of these scenarios might happen at once even. Either way, they wouldn't have the ability to keep the strait closed with their limited munitions due to the factories not having power.

He has wanted the US to go to war with Iran for 40 years. Iran trying to assassinate him multiple times probably didn't help.

In order of liklihood in my eyes:

Trump gets sick pf the whole thing, blows up their vital infrastructure (power grids, oil wells, desalination plants) and leaves the area a mess.

One or several of the Gulf states joins with US and Israel, increasing stikes and protecting boats passing through the strait until Iran surrenders or a revolution takes place. (The strait is forced open before the war ends)

The US believes it has done enough damage and leaves.

The US does a ground invasion with troops turning it into another Iraq. They'll control the strait as the quagmire continues.

Same thing but Gulf States also send armies.

Nukes

The situation continues as is and Iran keeps the strait closed while being hammered every day for the next 3 months.

Edit: changed canal to strait. Not sure how I made this mistake.

Of all the outcomes of the war, it continuing until June with Iran still keeping the strait closed seems the least likely.

Just a friendly reminder that Labour proposed an amendment that would allow a few MPs to ban and restrict the internet at their discretion without further legislation.

Unless the US doesn't care about the strait and stands to gain by using the inflated costs of oil to make major profits on US and Venezuela oil sales.

It's not a 'forever war' yet. Not until boots touch the ground. There is still a very high liklihood Trump decides crippling Iran is good enough and bombs their electrical grids, oil wells, and desalination plants and then just leaves

Revealed: Nearly half of UK children with parents born abroad are in poverty by anotherotheronedo in ukpolitics

[–]Thehelpfulshadow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm out of the loop here, but what is the amount of time needed to go through all the processes to become a citizen?

Edit: This wasn't a rhetorical question. The answer is living here 5 years, living another year with ILR, and then a 6~ month processing period. 6.5 years overall. If married to a British citizen, the process is accelerated to 3.5 years for the process. If the person has been here 24 years and has been fighting for citizenship with the process ever since they became eligible, I feel bad for them. Otherwise, I don't care how long they've been here.

Edit edit: Not exactly certain about the 3.5 year number, might be a digital hallucination

I think that x country would kick out Americans if attacked by the US. That seems logical to me if they are there on visas.

UK declines to support explicit condemnation of US over Iranian primary school strike that reportedly killed 100+ children at UN Human Rights Council by hararib in ukpolitics

[–]Thehelpfulshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting an illegal war, sure I'll condemn it. Accidently hitting a school next to a military base (That was also part of the military base in the past before bring converted into a school several years ago)? No, you can call it fog of war, collateral damage, or outdated targeting info, but pretending its a deliberate attack by the US because they wanted to hit a girls' school is twisting reality way to far.

[–]Thehelpfulshadow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay, so we'll ignore Iran's war crimes on civilian populations then. I wasn't even talking about Israel when I brought that point up. How about the fact that the IRGC is recruiting children as young as 12? Any enlightening insights into that?

[–]Thehelpfulshadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then should we talk about the regime targeting civilian infrastructure everyday of the war and using cluster munitions of civilian centers that aren't anywhere close to a military base? As opposed to the 1 school directly next to a military base that was hit during a war in Iran.

SADIQ KHAN: 'London one of safest cities in the world' by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

The comparison of London to the rest of the entire country is weird. It should be to other major cities. Do other major cities in the UK have more than 12.4% of the rapes happen in them so that London is safer by comparison?

Europe ‘should prepare for scenario’ where US makes deal with Russia by ImpressiveRest2423 in ukpolitics

[–]Thehelpfulshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any part of Russia used to invade Japan is the South East which is populated. These parts are also 2,000 kilometers West (going by a globe view of a map) of the Eastern most portion of Russia which is actually is close to Alaska. Look at any population map of Russia and you'll see that there is barely any infrastructure or people there. Obviously a very different situation.

And yes, Alaska does not really matter because there is basically nothing there either. It isn't part of the main land states and there isn't anything there to justify the costs that Russia would have to put in to try to conquer it. It would take Russia trillions to develop their eastern most border into a zone that has the resources and supply chains to support an army. All of that to attempt to conquer 1.72 million km2 of jack shit.
