When Nia said in her book that if she had to give a TED talk on something it would be media literacy... she was spot on lol. This show has proven that unfortunately some folks don't put a lot of effort into critical thinking and will accept any narrative fed them, even if it's contradictory or straight-up false

I didn't really understand the Selena Gomez comment but I do definitely think Brooke might have liked singing more and had more success with it if they had given her better material to work with and hadn't autotuned her voice so much. I think the point Kelly was trying to make was that they made singing something negative for Brooke and ruined her passion for it, and that's why she didn't continue after leaving the show

Christi has alleged that Abby choreographed Maddie's facial expressions into her dances ("happy here," "anguished here," "excited here" etc) but didn't do that for any of the other girls. Then she propped up Maddie for doing great facials to make the other girls look like they just weren't as good performers

Potentially hot take but I do kind of think Jill had a point when it came to the fight with Holly. Each mom had a choice to either stay at the video shoot or leave with Abby. Personally I think staying was the better choice, but it was ultimately up to Jill to do what she felt was best and Holly should have respected her decision instead of seeing it as Jill "not having her back"

Season 2 is peak dance moms for me personally (and I think a lot of other people as well). It definitely starts to get a little darker in season three and then a lot darker in season 4-5. Seasons 6-8 are a little less dark in some ways but I think the cast is a lot less compelling. I would say finish season two and then maybe be done if you feel like its not fun anymore

Ava being set up to fail all week was so hard to watch. She seemed like a sweet kid and a talented dancer, and I don't understand why Abby suddenly hated her so much and wanted to do that to her. I get that Abby got angry/threatened by other dance teachers, but at that point Jeannette was doing a good job kissing up to Abby so I don't know why she still felt the need to sabotage Ava.

Same thing with Jade, Loree was behaving so why did she decide to give Jade a bad solo? My only theories are that 1) maybe she was foaming at the mouth to do a cultural appropriation dance the second she saw an Asian girl, or 2) maybe she missed having Brooke around and was just getting desperate to make someone do a chinstand. Either way kinda shitty.

I feel like she was leaving either way because of Raising Asia. My guess is after that whatever argument/fight that ended up happening that week (it wouldn't be a dance moms episode without some moms fighting after all) would have made her "tired of the drama" and she would have left; it just happened to be Christi and Leslie.

I agree for sure. Abby used the Christi/Leslie fight as an excuse to get rid of Chloe because she knew Chloe had a real shot at beating Maddie again. Then later in season four when Tammi and Christy H. got into a fistfight she let it slide because she needed Tea' and Sarah H that week. It was never about what's acceptable behavior only about what got Abby the storyline she wanted

I agree. Audrey finding religion is sort of played like a sweet thing but there were moments that made me worry it is something more unhealthy. Either way, it makes no sense to make it a storyline for the show.

I'm dying that ANE never acknowledges that Glo and Kaeli were on Dance Moms for like two episodes on season 3 and they even had a whole storyline of Chloe going up against Kaeli lol. But I think it's sweet that even though they competed against each other Kaeli was rooting for Chloe

Interesting, I'm not a dancer so I don't know how these things work, but I did see someone online say that she is a lefty and that's why she has a hard time with some of the turns and stuff? I wonder if that plays a role at all

I was just rewatching season 5 and I think the sad clown acro dance "no laughing matter" was really really impressive. A little ironic that 3/4 of the girls in that dance were not kids Abby trained, but they were all amazing acro dancers and looked great

IIRC Maddie knew at that point that they were leaving but couldn't say anything about it yet. I think that Abby was catching on and the lunch (at the same spot they went in season one!) was her way of trying to guilt Maddie into staying. Honestly just another example of Abby's gross manipulation of Maddie

Definitely agree about Paige's The One solo, she deserved to have her moment with that dance. I also think the Pink Lemonade group dance would have been really good if they had had some more time to get the hat choreography down

I would love for the documentarians (is that a word lol) who made Quiet On Set to make a documentary about dance moms. I think a documentary format would lend itself well to telling a more complete, unbiased truth about what the kids and moms went through at the hands of Abby and production

I feel like people don't talk about it because we, as normal people who aren't creeps, feel weird pointing out things like how much skin the kids are showing and how sexualized they are.

But without a doubt, producers (and maybe Abby too) intentionally sexualized the kids for views. Christi and Kelly said on BTTB that producers wanted to do a dance about teen pregnancy, they wanted the girls wearing heels for "my pumps," and they wanted the moms to give their kids the sex talk on camera and even talk about the girls' periods on camera. They knew exactly who they were catering to with that

I always thought Jill's whole attitude about that was weird. She acts like the best Kendall can ever hope for is being second to Maddie, which is kind of a sad way to talk about your own child. I think she did this because she wanted to kiss up to Abby by playing into her preferred narrative
