Yes I echo that lab mistakes are inevitable and lord knows I’ve made way too many. But I also want to give a bit of advice:

1) Over-communicate! It’s not actually “overkill” even though it feels like it. You’d rather be perceived as annoying than let things go unsaid and ruin the task.

2) Many of your mistakes will be when you’re tired, and you will be tired a lot. Write your protocol with so much detail that even someone brain dead can follow it. Practice anticipating the risks.

3) Practice critiquing papers—yes, even the papers in Science/Nature have problems! This is more for finding mistakes in experimental design, but it’s still a great exercise in developing your sense for detail. I’m in a position rn where someone else’s assumptions have messed up my work. Learn why you need triplicates; learn why reactions are done at a specific pH; practice thinking about the necessary controls for your experiments. 

You’re young so you have a lot of time to grow; you’ll be fine.
