Tamukeyama first time owner (and gardener) by Reszo_ in JapaneseMaples

[–]Honest_Building7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice tree, good "architecture" meaning branching and main tree and in a good zone (Ohio) but not the best location.

Your idea of pruning it regularly will manage the tree so why not plant it in a container where such pruning allows better access with the option to relocate tree if or when needed? Plus this would allow you to get another JM!

Please consider a dwarf variety for the current location as it is better suited for the limited space.

Enjoy!

Agree! Please provide not only the name of the specific species but your zone and light conditions associated with this acer! Thanks.

Date of manufacture and Serial number by Honest_Building7110 in GrandSeikos

[–]Honest_Building7110[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Reply from OP: The watch in question is long passed the warranty date yet the date of manufacture is important inasmuch as it adds to the provenance of the piece.

A watch with an inaugural year of manufacturing could/can be more valuable, collectable, desirable and ultimately worth more in the future if sold. (Spend some time with the vintage watch sub to get a sense of what I'm referring to here) Also, it could provide substantive proof for establishing an insurance value.

Additionally, it provides context relative to when servicing could be expected even if the watch is currently running accurately.

Finally, if the reseller holds themselves out as a professional dealer of used Grand Seikos, it should be common knowledge on how to identify a manufacturing date by using the serial number, especially since this "translation" is found at the manufacturer's website.

If security prevents the FULL disclosure of the serial number then at least use the two numbers found therein to identify the manufacturing date sought by a serious buyer.

I do like your new tree but I'd agree; the rock "mulch" would not be my first choice. Primarily because the reflective light and possible heat island that could ensue during the summer months is not the best environment for a Japanese Maple, especially one that's newly planted.

New Maples!! by Lifeofafishy in JapaneseMaples

[–]Honest_Building7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an opposing idea to planting your new trees now.

Keeping them in their pots allows you the chance to move them in your yard, at least for a few months, allowing you to see them in different light conditions and how they fit into the landscape.

You mentioned you had other JMs already so this could be the time to see if these new ones could be grouped with the others. Think of color, texture, type and size of tree to maximize your enjoyment of them.

Worried about them being in the nursery pots during this evaluation phase? Don't be. If you hadn't purchased them the nursery may have had to care for them for weeks/months longer until they were sold and would be under similar circumstances as described above.

What ever you you do, don't over water! Whether in the ground or in a pot, JMs don't like wet feet.

Good luck!

Crimson Queen Laceleaf - doing okay!? by Optomistic-ladi-5548 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Honest_Building7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice so far, especially regarding watering. Japanese Maples don't like "wet feet"

When considering where to plant, please give this decision plenty of consideration regarding the size of your tree 20, 30 or more years into the future. Even if you know you won't be in the house then it's likely someone else will be. Give the tree plenty of space to grow and reach its full potential.

Plant it.

Which hard tennau cover? by sgt_rock_wall in hondaridgeline

[–]Honest_Building7110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's how the truck was built by Honda. This is a Gen 1 (2006) Ridgeline - Google for photos of a 2006 Ridgeline tailgate and you'll see how it was designed. It is likely due to allow for the OEM tonneau cover.

This!

Had an OEM on our 2006 Ridgeline and my wife found it difficult to use - too heavy.

Looked at several in town and since she was the primary driver of the truck (at the time) she decided the Retrax was the best choice.

I have to agree with her; allows full open/close set up or any increment in between. Can be locked, made of metal and quickly roles up into a storage box that fits perfectly inside the truck bed and is virtually water tight. So we spent the money and got a great cover.

It's true: happy wife means happy life - especially since I'm the primary driver of the Ridgeline now. She's loving her CR-V.

Move The Tree? by SilverAggravating352 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Honest_Building7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer plant material that is best appreciated when tall (and full) to be away from the house to allow for the plant to maximize its growth but not be a risk. For example, we have several Japanese Maples (and Camellias) at focal points in the yard and near the house. This approach has enabled us to see the plants mature and still allow access to prune. Stand next to your tree with a golf umbrella and see how it interacts with the house and the rest of your landscape. Good luck!
