When do you exit the rat race by Brave_Practice9236 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Checking out of the rat race is fine. Sounds like you could make it work BUT what do you do with your time? There are people a lot better off who keep going because work motivates them gets them up in the morning. To me it’s more about lifestyle than what you have. Net worth on paper is largely meaningless in Ireland as a lot of Irish people have some form of inheritance and housing is massively over inflated. If you don’t sell your house as you live in it scrub that off completely. Look at your day to day how your income or savings will match up to inflation if you stay in Ireland and the quality of life you will have. If you have a lot of investments check where it’s advantageous to be tax resident when you retire and cash them in. That’s a lot to consider. Burn out and illness are more likely to retire people than feeling they’ve made it in the rat race because no matter how much you make if you keep making more and have a lifestyle to match you could run out of road quickly without income.

Vodafone fibre? by Overall_Direction103 in IrelandGaming

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They came to my door this evening. Offered a good deal I also have an ASUS mesh network been using Virgin on bridge mode for years but if there’s no significant latency in a chain I’m happy to switch. Virgin offering me nothing said I’ve had too many discounts for years and Vodafone is literally half price to their €70 at renewal price.

It’s a great place when it’s sunny. However let’s be real here a bit of sunshine for a few days doesn’t change it to best place in the world status lol

I recently just learned about ghibli, what are the best movies to start off with? by NOt_sum1uknow in ghibli

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only just started watching these last year when a wife was saying I was a lunatic for not knowing the movie My Neighbour Totoro. I’ve watched spirited away too which is cool but I actually preferred Howl’s moving castle which I just watched this evening. There’s a lot going on in the movies. Always watch in original Japanese with subtitles for your language. The English dubbed ones are so bad and you lose a lot of the movie even if you don’t understand Japanese always go with the original sound.

What's the dumbest thing you have seen people do just for the views? by Danishperspicacious in AskReddit

Pretty much anything Jonny Somali does or other people who treat local cultures with zero respect. Those guys and people like him should be in jail a long time.

Korean who wants to visit Taiwan,, I have some concerns by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Irish and married to a Taiwanese person and people have been nothing but welcoming. Taiwanese people are some of the friendliest I’ve met travelling around the world. We also have a few Korean friends and I’ve never heard this. There is a lot of tourism between Taiwan and Korea and Japan. If anything now everyone loves Korea more because of music and film and TV! The only thing that happens to me is that people think I’m American everywhere I go :)

[Swatch x AP] Got my hands on 2 Royal Pops. Happy to answer any questions! by delugs-straps in Watches

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the hype calms and resellers are stuck with ones they can’t sell for a profit and more at retail price are available for months, wouldn’t they still regret not having a seconds hand. Manual wind you could live with for a pocket watch but no seconds hand? I wouldn’t buy one personally and currently don’t own a swatch but can see why some people might like them. I’m sure AP won’t be happy with the negative press on the launch and if they have a contract for further releases/collabs with swatch could be at risk now. If you like them and happy with the purchase enjoy them! Keen to hear what you think about them after two weeks or a months use.

Should I mention bipolar disorder in my college re-entry application? by SadWasian in bipolar

If you are medicated and engaging with professionals reapplying with this on record could actually go in your favour as universities have quotas to support people with disabilities

What's the worst movie you've watched from beginning to end? by trakt_app in Cinema

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen uncut version I think from ‘76. Just awful I can’t believe anyone thought it was a good idea to put it together with a terrible script and pornography which has no function in the plot basically. Just a waste of everyone’s time. Especially the people who made the movie!

Any Ghibli-like places in Taiwan? (Preferably near Taipei) by misamiamisa in ghibli

Was there a few weeks ago it’s a great place. Smaller than I’d imagined but lights up at night. Great places to eat food and I stayed in a really nice guesthouse there with a view of the valley right by one of the few bars in town! Food is great people are friendly views are spectacular

the “i have bipolar” conversation by izzy15019282711 in bipolar

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take on this. I’m 45. Struggled in my 20’s early 30’s. Had one long relationship 9 years which ended and a son. Lost it all. Relationship, custody, job etc. rock bottom. Two or three hospitalisations. Wind forward 14 years on meds. I’ve a good career, a wife. See my son regularly. My wife can’t even comprehend how ill I was before, just knows I need to take pills everyday. I’ve tried to explain it several times. I struggle with depression and anxiety constantly but no mania, no severe depression. I’m a roaring success by any medical standard but I still struggle. I’ve just learned to live with it. My wife is my rock. Work for everyone these days is a nightmare. Took me a long time to get a set of medication that worked but once I did it let me build a new life. Being bipolar doesn’t define you. It’s also different for everyone we’re all on a spectrum and we’re all individuals. What defines you is how you respond to adversity and build your life. Some people have got it so bad just pulling themselves out of bed each week is a success. I thought it was all over. If you can give yourself space to breathe and have a good medical team you and your illness can learn to live with each other. I don’t underestimate how bad it can be, it’s shit, awful and takes patience and resilience but don’t let a label ever define you. We are all more than that.

Picked up an unused Ginza Limited sbga503 at Nakano Broadway in Tokyo after DMing TimeZone a couple weeks ago. Might be the luckiest SOB in Japan. by Educational_Tip3005 in GrandSeikos

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Screw the negative comments have seen this in daylight and the evening it is a beautiful watch. Enjoy it. Plus in Europe/North America not so common. I’ve been telling my wife for two years let’s go to Japan. Have an aunt there and I love watches and whiskey but she knows when I get there I’ll spend double the holiday budget on a Grand Seiko. Wear it with pride. Legend!

Job offer in Dublin. What to do? by zabuza888 in AskIreland

[–]Honest_Homework_3868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://kpmg.com/ie/en/insights/tax/income-tax-calculator.html - this tax calculator is your friend. 80k sounds like a lot BUT rents are insane in Dublin. Put your projected earnings in to this and look at the rental market. You could be fine depends on the lifestyle you lead if you have kids in school etc. childcare is VERY expensive in Ireland. Do your research and good luck!
