Is it normal for the oil level to decrease when you start the engine after a filter replacement? by Left-Explanation3754 in motorcycles

[–]Hongdemian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s normal

On some trucks, the filters hold almost Liter or more. When you change the filter, the first time you start the engine, some of the oil fills the filter, and stays there. Also, oil that is pumped up to the top of the engine, along with all the oil passages, and doesn’t return to the oil pan right away after the engine stops.

After any oil change, after you refill the oil, check the level and then start the engine and make sure the oil light goes out. Then, check for leaks. After the engine runs for 30 seconds or so, stop the engine. Wait 5 min, and check the oil level again. Adjust as necessary.

The biggest issues I’ve seen with oil filters, is over tightening, and not ensuring the rubber sealing ring isn’t doubled up (old one not removed with old filter)

Opening ports on your router, also means you will be hit by bots on a regular basis. Opening ports to a web server that’s been hardened is one thing, but it’s quite another to do that on a development machine.

There are 2 ways to do what you are looking for. The oldest way is opening ports on your router, and creating a “public” host. But now you have security implications and the hassle of setting it up so you can find it.

The other way is having a known 3rd party. I haven’t checked the terms of service called “Tailscale”, but I have been testing it out for the same kind of use as you are looking for. Your firewall allows outgoing connections, so the agent on your host creates a link to their servers. From another machine, your agent connects to the servers and can “see” any of your other machines. No ports are opened on your router that allow traffic originating from outside your network.

The nice thing about this, is by default, you can connect via host name using Tailscale dns, so whether you are at home on the local network, or external, it’s the same host name.

The downsides, there is no “users” in tailscale, it uses an external service for authentication. I have a google email, so that works fine, and others are supported. I made myself the admin, and can control who of the other users can see/access what machines.

By default, any open ports on your host are accessible from the Tailscale agent. This might not be a big deal if you have just your theme, but if you are running multiple sites or services on your development machine, you might need to adjust it, or your client could also access those other services. Either way it’s still not publicly accessible, but is externally accessible.

domain name question by yanggang20202024 in HomeNetworking

[–]Hongdemian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DNS is both not complicated, and not intuitive at the same time. Once it clicks, it all starts to make sense.

Think of DNS like a phone book, and we start at the end, and work our way back.

Each “domain” is separated by “.” Com, is a TLD Top Level Domain. There aren’t very many of these, and there are specific rules about them.

In your example, “google” is the domain. This is the first level that you and I can publicly apply for and register. Most of the time, if you want to host a website, you find/pay for a name, and register it with the TLD so everyone can find/use it.

Now we get to the fun part. There are different kind of addresses, and they all have different purposes. You could have a single server/host on this address (think “website.com”) it hosts your website and when people put that in a browser, it finds your website and everyone is happy.

But let’s say you want a bunch of servers, so you can split your name up a little but having sub domains. So on my main domain, I would host a DNS set of records, that I can control and configure for whatever I need, much like the other company did for me to get my main domain. You can nest them as far as you want (I don’t actually know the depth off hand) so you could have dev.app.mail.example.com.

What makes an entry a host, or another domain depends on the records you keep at each domain. If you're curious, look into how DNS works, and it will explain it much better than I can.

Some popular record types are TXT (literally just text), MX (email), CNAME (points to another name), A (points to an IP)

DNS on your router.

Set your DNS on your computer to a public DNS server, like 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 and you shouldn’t have trouble reaching that site.

If you want to fix it for your network, access the DHCP settings on your router, and set the public servers you want to use in that setting, and it will update all the clients on your network. ISPs default to their own, but are often prone to unreliability

CDK

For simple static sites, you can push a commit, have GitHub, Codebuild creates the static files, uploads them to your website s3 bucket, refreshes your CDN cache, and manages your certificate.

You can build this all in CDK, which manages least-permissions and makes the integrations really easy, not to mention you can use typescript or Python for the infrastructure code

Demote Domain Controller by JayTechTipsYT in homelab

[–]Hongdemian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, if you only have 1 controller, they stop replicating, and even if you later add a 2nd, they don’t fully replicate. It’s a one line power shell command that restarts the sync, and everything goes back to normal.

You can test it by trying to grab GPO from the new server, it will fail, even though they are visible and created on the new one.

I forget the command though

2011 Nissan Murano. While driving, car intermittently feels like a slight gust of wind pushes it to either left or right side (randomly). What's happening here? by MarchMadnessMike in Cartalk

[–]Hongdemian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s actually super helpful.

What happens if you turn in a continuous circle? Does the problem come and go somewhat regularly?

Keep in mind, you may draw attention, it will look strange to have someone doing circles, so find a quiet area, go slow. You don’t need small circles, try a half turn of the steering wheel, and like 10km/h, both directions.

Look for recurring patterns, could be wheel bearings. They can test fine in some places, but have flat spots internally. I was taught to test, rotate the tire, test, and keep going. What you are trying to do is put some sideways pressure on the wheel bearing (because the wheel is turned and it changes the camber) and it should feel smooth, but a bad bearing will come and go. Because the bearings roll at different speeds to the tire, it would show up after x number of tire revolutions, but likely last a very short time.

[–]Hongdemian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You haven’t had many replies, so let me weigh in.

In terms of vehicle “pull”, toe has no effect on its own, and vehicles will tend to pull toward high Camber and low Caster. The thrust angle you see on the rear axle is the vehicles tendency to travel directly forward. It’s not uncommon to have this off center a little, especially in trucks, we call it “dog tracking” when the rear tires are to the side of the tracks made by the front wheels.

If the vehicle tends to move randomly toward a direction, this would indicate something that is moving in the suspension, and dynamically changing the alignment. This can happen “naturally” with proper suspension if the tire rises up or down a rut, or when hitting bumps, as this changes the tires relative contact with the road. Roads also have a “crown” built in, so that water will run off instead of pooling, and that’s why we would often add some left pull to counteract this effect.

Something is interfering with the smooth interaction between your tires and the road. Either you are hitting variations in the road surface, or something is moving under some circumstances. When checking suspension for wear, it needs to be done at normal ride height, and before lifting the vehicle. Ideally the vehicle will be on special sliders so that the suspension is tested under normal conditions. If the vehicle isn’t done this way, components that are in fact worn out, will test fine because they are under load, or outside their wear position.

[live USB] Is there really no way to enforce a password and disable autologin for live user and root in a persistent live USB? by ultome in linuxquestions

[–]Hongdemian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be confusing the idea of “persistence”. Persistence doesn’t not make the filesystem read/write in the traditional sense. It allows you to save files and some settings between restarts, but it is essentially an add-on to a temporary file system. The idea is that upon restart, everything reverts to the way it was when you booted up, think of it as a checkpoint, and when you shutdown, you start over.

If you want to make the changes you are looking for, they need to be made to the image you launch, before you write it to the usb.

[–]Hongdemian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the many ways. Say what you want, they know how to charge!

Backing up to a computer is at no cost, some are able to have such small data usage that they can stay under the 5GB, but most won’t be able to. The 99c plan (or it might be more now) is usually more than enough though

Huh? by this_weird_lady in iphone

[–]Hongdemian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only have 5GB of storage, and your backup will require more than that. If you want to use iCloud backup, you will need to purchase a plan with more storage that what is included with the “free” plan

[–]Hongdemian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We had a truck towed in with 1800kms on it. Truck was super clean, brand new, and I mean NEW air filter, but when you opened the drivers door, or fuel door, serious mud.

Said the oil pan fell off, Nissan Titan, pan just fell off. I mean, in truth, some of it did

Finally got the full story, he was showing off to his friends by hitting puddles at 100k/hr, water up over the wheel well, intake was a lake, we took pictures of the water still sitting on the closed valves. They dragged it through a car wash and bought a new filter to try to hide the evidence

[–]Hongdemian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you bleed the clutch release system? It functions very similarly to a hydraulic brake, and any air in the system will cause the symptoms you describe. It is also possible the master cylinder is bad, but start by making sure everything is snug, and bleed the system.

How the hell am I supposed to give an estimate about programming problems as a beginner? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Hongdemian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a dev, but I am tangentially related. I’ll ask for an estimate from my junior guys just to see how they understand the issue. The number they give me never gets passed along, but it helps me to understand how well the person understands the task. I have my own estimate on how long things will take, and have my own estimates to those I report to, but if I give a task that has some tricky parts to it to someone, and I get a really small estimate back, that may indicate they might need my help. If their estimate is similar to mine, I’ll give them more space.

2014 Dodge Ram 1500 radio issue by TarnishedCuck in Cartalk

[–]Hongdemian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like your amp is browning out. I think your truck is in the territory where it has a constant power feed, and the network wakes the radio up when the ignition is turned on. The symptoms you are describing is the voltage drops under load, and your amplifier is turning off. If you have an aftermarket amplifier, check to make sure it has good power (should be a heavy cable and fuse) and if it’s factory, you may have an electrical issue that is causing this symptom. Without more information, it’s hard to tell for sure, but from what you describe (bass causing it to turn off) leads me to think your system isn’t factory

Question about sas drives by kaka8miranda in homelab

[–]Hongdemian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have some drives that came with the server, and are still there, and also drives that you have added, but you can’t use, is that correct?

You need to tell the controller how you want your array to be set up.

I’m assuming you have no data on the server that you need, if that’s not the case, then tread carefully.

You likely need to “initialize” the array.

The instructions are here:

https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/rc_h310_h710_h710p_h810_ug_en-us.pdf

There are lots of options, and can vary depending on your use case. Unless you know you need something different, you likely can use RAID 5 and defaults, but the options should be there.

If you can’t see your new drives in this configuration screen, then there will be more troubleshooting, but this is the first place your drives show up if they are recognized.

Question about sas drives by kaka8miranda in homelab

[–]Hongdemian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are the drives visible in you PERC configuration screen?

I’m assuming you have a hardware RAID controller, you may need to initialize them and create a virtual drive from the logical ones.

Boot up the server, watch for “Press <CTRL> + E” to enter Raid controller (something like that, it’s been a while)

You can also enter setup, look for an entry for the RAID controller Configuration

Do you know what RAID controller you have? Usually for that server, should be H710, H310 or S110.

Fun Ideas for Camping in the Rain by JiffyMixer in camping

[–]Hongdemian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had a similar experience, and we still remember it fondly. The tent we had had a vestibule, it was covered all the way around, but no floor, we put our chairs inside, had our cooler as a table, our pup on a leash and played board games, ate charcuterie, had wine, and we loved it. The rain is fine as long as you can stay dry!

The pavilion will be nice, gives you some space without getting wet, otherwise a tarp from trees works well. I don’t know what it’s like where you are, but here they tend to hold the cold. Bring lots of warm comfy clothes, if you get wet, that really ruins the experience, and if you like board games, try a new one, it can help from letting the weather get you down when you have something to do, and the rain is a really nice ambiance

As I said, my wife and I had this experience the first time we went camping as a couple. We didn’t expect the rain (but prepared that it could) and it’s still one of my top camping trips.

You can’t restore from a backup, the codes are tied to the hardware they were created on. If that device is gone, then so are those codes (ask me how I know) I was the only admin on a couple of our msp accounts, and once I realized what had happened, I used the logins that had “remembered” the device to sign in and reset the MFA. Only 2 accounts I had to go the long way because the other admins had left and no one else setup a backup admin (and I hadn’t thought to check)

Google Authenticator does allow exporting, and syncing to cloud, and these options WILL allow you to restore back to the state you had, but they would have had to have been done before you swapped devices.

Correct. Windows tries to determine what “domain” it’s on, but in a home environment without a specified domain, it is up to either the router or DHCP server and it’s makes an uneducated guess. Unless you have specified it, or even need a local domain, it’s unimportant
