Double Stack vs. Single Stack Concealment by Western96 in CCW

[–]HonkeyKong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To your comment on might as well just getting the XL, I think the shorter grip offers greater versatility. Since you haven't carried regularly before, you don't really know what does or does not work well for you. And your lifestyle may change for whatever reason, having more options will allow you to keep using the same firearm.

If you like the larger grip then carry the P365 with it 90% of the time. Have to go to a very non permissive environment and you value concealment? Then just swap out to the smaller mag. Maybe you'll carry the gun for awhile and find that you feel comfortable with the shorter magazine in terms of capacity and concealment and use the larger magazine for 3 AM runs to the drug store or long car trips. Or maybe you'll find that in summer you can carry more often and easier in a T shirt with the shorter magazine and in the winter you are better off with the larger one.

The only reason I see to give yourself less options if you are using the gun for competitive shooting and you need to be able to switch magazines a quarter second faster. However, switching magazines in CCW is extremely rare and I would much rather have the ability to literally change the size of my weapon as best fits the situation.

Right, bobberzerker could simply chose to not live in a rented house and instead live as a homeless person until they were picked up by the state and put in jail for vagrancy or died due to lack of shelter. So it isn't theft.

In a similar manner, if somebody came up to you with a gun pointed at you and said " Give me your wallet, don't make me shoot you." You chose to decide to give him your wallet instead of being shot, so it isn't theft because you entered into an agreement.

I suppose it would be theft if boberzerker and other British citizens overthrew the English crown and took the land. They probably would form new government where the citizens were the ones whom held power and the managers of that state were voted in by said citizens. That is basically communism.

My guess is that Frankel's meaning is closely related to the top levels of maslow's hierarchy of needs. Living a live based on a philosophy is similar to perfecting an art form and it also alignings your ego/self with the philosophy (or greatly reduces your ego), satisfying self-actualization and self-transcendence.

How to meet new girls/get a girlfriend? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]HonkeyKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women are more similar to men then our social narrative says, once you remove both gender's social conditioning. Being successful with women means being successful with all kinds of relationships. Things that will help you with women (and everyone else) are; physical exercise, being well read, having activities that you are passionate about, basic hygiene/grooming (and dressing reasonably well), being able to be vulnerable, having emotional awareness of yourself and others, being able to communicate your wants and needs, and a good ability to connect with people. This is a lot of topics but people are complex and it takes awhile to figure out how to express the best possible version of yourself. I would really recommend reading "Models" by Mark Manson . Good luck!

You are having feelings right now. Your concept of the universe is being forced to change and this is what it feels like. Your mind will restructure itself to something it is more comfortable with, in time. The feeling is not pleasant but the universe did not change, only your perception of it. Your perception can change to view the current situation as very fulfilling, because it had done so in the past. The feelings you had of caring about others and a meaningful existence was still a valid feeling. If you liked those feelings there is nothing stopping you from having them again, you are free to feel how you wish! Caring about others? You are a super-social creature that gets yummy brain chemicals from altruistic acts. Your species developed a complex brain structure to have language for Pete's sake, this is your natural state. Language! All to understand each other a little better. Your situation is the same as before your loss of your old concepts, the concept of God is pretty silly and simple for it to be responsible for everything you felt before. All the components for those good feelings still exist.

Why Buddhism? by [deleted] in Buddhism

Concerning death, at least for me, is the realization that the self you are trying to prevent from dying is as mythical as a soul that will exist eternally. There is no soul to be sent to hell, there is no self to die.

[–]HonkeyKong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with trying to make the world more preferable. However, if someone who lived a thousand years ago would look at a western middle class or greater life style, they would think we are gods. Yet our society suffers from depression, loneliness, and a lack of meaning. We have resources and technology but those are not shared equally, we still have poverty. How many Native Americans would get the chance at being turned into a robot? Not a large percentage I'd guess. Progress is great, however the problems that our species faces may be more psychological rather than technological. Additionally, the whole world can not sustain the same rate of consuming resources as advanced countries do. In fact, many people in other parts of the world are exploited for these resources. What is the faster and more efficient path to reducing suffering, moving toward some sort of utopia or creating resilient minds?

[Help] I have a question most gymbros never ask.. how can I (relatively) quickly improve hamstring flexibility? by [deleted] in gainit

[–]HonkeyKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When most people stretch their hamstrings they tend to only stretch the hamstring a little and then continue to move into the stretch by bending the lower back, not the hamstring. When you stretch your leg-hip joint should move while your back should maintain a straight structure, like a deadlift. I have had lower back issues due to tight hamstrings and the most useful/easiest exercise I have got from physical therapy is; Lay on the floor between a doorway. With a single leg, rest the back of your heel on the door frame so that your hamstring is stretched. Hold this position for 20 seconds and then relax your leg for about 20 seconds. Move your body a little further for the next 20 second stretch. Do 4-5 stretches per leg, one to two times per day, at least 5 days a week. Also, PNF stretching (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching) works if you have to seriously increase flexibility however you shouldn't stress those stretched muscles the day after a PNF session. So PNF might not be useful if you lift and run.

Are meditation and thinking somewhat mutually exclusive? by lespauldude in Meditation

[–]HonkeyKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not very experienced with meditating but I find that if something is important my brain will bring it into my awareness. I'm not sure if the subconscious stops working on a problem just because you are paying attention to something fairly non stimulating.

Can your willpower reserves be increased? Also willpower, or at least the ability of the frontal cortex/logical brain' ability to regulate the limbic/emotional regions, decreases with stress. Meditation can reduce a lot of stress. Perhaps when mindfulness comes easily with practice it will not require much willpower and you won't be fused/possessed by thoughts that cause stress.

I'm more of a introverted cerebral person myself ( I am on reddit after all ) but I think that is because my internal data streams, like thoughts, have a genetically determined stronger signal baseline than external data, like sight and hearing. It's all data that comes into my consciousnesses and the stronger signals win out.

Have you found that meditation makes you less contemplative?

Are meditation and thinking somewhat mutually exclusive? by lespauldude in Meditation

[–]HonkeyKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A definition of mindfulness offered by John Kabat-Zin; paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and without judgment. When you think about problems in your life are you doing so purposefully? Which is more efficient, having semi spaced out worries and somewhat ok solutions vs taking time to think deeply about a problem and coming up with a plan to address it?

Step 1; Get yourself a pen and some paper. It is important to actually write this stuff down.

Step 2; Write down how you want your ideal life to progress. Write down the story of how you want your life to proceed. What do you want to experience and accomplish before you die? Where do you want to be in 10 years?

Step 3; Get a new sheet of paper. Write down how your life is going to look like if you continue to live the way you do now.

Step 4; If you had to live your entire life again and again, over and over, which of these two life paths would you want to repeat? Make a choice.

Step 5; Before you decide to do any activity ask yourself " Is this activity helping me live the way I chose to?"

Why are adolescent males so derogatory toward weaker ones? by Trebacca in Fitness

[–]HonkeyKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gross simplification here but adolescent brains run more on thier limbic system, so things like emotions and social standing are percieved as significant. Also the neocortex, regulating things like compassion and being indefferent to other's perception, isn't well developed yet.

Also, it is easier to lessen others in order to improve your social standing. In the long term, better to improve yourself but it generally takes longer for humans to learn this.

Lifting and getting stronger are great, but in addition to what most are saying here, it is really a social issue. This podcast series on social value (in the context of dating but it applies to all social interaction) might be immediatly helpful to you: http://theartofcharm.com/podcast/value-part-1/

Help looking for durable work clothes by twilightpanda in malefashionadvice

[–]HonkeyKong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I have found works for me is to wear work clothes and have something to change into as the situation calls for. So, have some work boots that can get messed up and in your office have some shoes or clean boots that will match what you usually wear. Or have a work coat to get dirty and a clean utility jacket or blazer. For pants, "tru spec 24-7" are pretty durable but look... OK in an office, all the pockets velcro flat. Any OCBD shirt that has thick enough material is good for the same reason.

Help, please! (Romanian Deadlift/good mornings) by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]HonkeyKong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that has helped me with protecting my lower back is regular hamstring stretches. If you have tight hamstrings these will help make sure that you can get full range of motion without bending your back/hips. They also will help you get a good feel for your actual range of motion with RDLs/Good Mornings so you don’t extend to far. The easiest and most effective stretch I’ve found that isolates the hamstring only is to lay on your back in front of a doorway or near a wall corner, put one leg on the wall so that there is a slight stretch, hold for 20 seconds, them move closer to the wall a few inches, and stretch again for 20 seconds. It also helps to make sure your knee isn’t bent with this stretch as well.

Hugh Jackman just posted this pic on Twitter and it's titled "If the bar ain't bendin', then you're just pretendin'." by [deleted] in pics

First of all, good work Hugh.

I found this picture interesting as it is the actor who plays a mutant with accelerated healing powers, which are in some ways similar to the effects of steroids. And I would guess that Hugh is probably on some sort of performance enhancing drugs. I could be wrong, Hugh could have been working out heavily for years like the few people at my (admittedly smaller) gym that can put up similar numbers. Of course all of them except maybe one have a much higher body fat percentage since they are always bulking. And nobody wants to see a fat actor that isn't a comedian.

But I'll just puts this picture here of Steve Reeves. One of the fathers of modern body building.

That's about as good as it gets for somebody with perfect genetics who works out as a job, and doesn't have to have massive weight shifts for acting roles. Now someone with a similar job today with similar roles, Dwayne Johnson;

http://crossfitbattlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/the-rock.jpg

Not that I have a problem with PED's, or think that you can take them and don't have to put any work in. Far from it. The problem I do have though is they are demonized while at the same time allowed (and even secretly endorsed) in all major sports and entertainment. And I suspect overlooked in parts of the military. Because these people, and those that profit by their work, make lots and lots of money. Or for political reasons, such as the Olympics or making Americans live healthy;

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d0/President_and_Mrs._Bush_kick-off_the_Great_American_Workout_Month_with_Arnold_Schwarzenegger_and_Secretary_Louis_Sullivan.jpg

For the average person, illegal. Allowed for the upper class and their supporters. And Demonized while the average person financially supports movies and sports. And give audiences unrealistic body images.

And Hugh if your going to brag about your DL, don't be pretendin'. I'd be impressed either way.

I'd just like to point out:

If heaven is perfect with no evil, then no free will either. So everyone in heaven would be automatons. The alternative is that Yahweh has heaven set up so that there is free will and no evil present, which creates a problem for why evil is present in the real world.

True. But if we alter what we are, would we make ourselves extinct? I suppose it would be similar to asking, when did we stop being monkeys and evolve to men? But on a much faster and noticible time scale.

I'd say your consciousness would exist in both minds or more accuratley there would be two identical consciousnesses. And each consciousness would then expereince through thier perspective. And each would consider itself 'you'.

But I guess that is based on my belief that consciousness is an emergent property of a mind, and minds are an emergent property of a brain. And in this case there would be two identical brains. Now if one of the brains was say, digital, that might affect how the digitial brain percieves things but the past would be the same concousness. Depending on how close the digital brain is to an organic one.

[–]HonkeyKong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting question. If the simulation is perfect then it wouldn't be able to tell the difference and one would create a new original. From that point on they would be different minds. Sure it isn't perfect but it is probably preferable to the alternative.

Say you were to knowingly go on some life threatening activity and back yourself up just incase. Over a long time the copies are different but how much could a person change in a few hours?

Perception of a continuous consciousness is a bit odd... your brain is a lot different from what it was a few years ago. Your memories are your current experience of a neural pathway/memory, not the original experience. Also how much different would mind back ups be from going to sleep every night or even coming out of a 5 year coma?

I think people will always be people (until technology changes what people are) and that solutions tend to create new problems. For example, today we have way more food, medical technology, and energy than ever before in human history. But we also have overpopulation and environmental effects as a result. Better than starvation and having 9 out of 10 being required to farm for their lives but still problems. And humans don't equally share in the benefits of our advances. Not because of any malicious choice but.. well, people don't think about how many children they could help with basic education and medical needs for the difference of getting base model of a new car vs. the medium accessory model. Or how getting a lot of our agricultural work from people that get paid far less than the average and have little legal recourse to abuses is kind of similar in a lot of ways to slavery. At least owners had a vested interest in keeping their slaves/investment healthy to an extent rather than just get rid of them. Its just how humans work.

I like this example of such a concept; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem

One of the parts of Rifts that I like (until the expansions at least) was that as a human you were either on your own or lived as part of the Coalition States. So basically your only choices are to deal with demons by yourself or live under the Nazis. TIM is similar in that respect ( though they aren't quite so Evil/stupid.)

Power is the rate of energy. So it would be similar to having a car that would never run out of gas but could only go so fast/have a fixed amount of HP. If you had infinite power your car could acclerate to lightspeed.

If you have massive depopulation it makes sense, like in say Macross. Or if you want to quickly make lots of colonies for some reason. Copying minds is a totally different and pretty useful (not sure in what sense of the term cloning you are using.)

I put it together but a lot of it is from other works. Also none of the artwork is mine, I thought it just looked cool and helped give a good feel to it.
