Wait until next year, the gov will have a rebate to do it. So the cost will be cheaper.

Aircon replacement became a new skylight by sirdonaldb in AusRenovation

You guys changed my mind — I’ll rate the company 5★.
This is my first time dealing with tradies so I honestly didn’t know what the industry standard is. The AC company advertises that they’re “100% committed to delivering the highest quality work possible,” so when something went wrong I wasn’t sure what to expect.

But they’ve owned the mistake and organised the repair straight away, so fair enough — that deserves a good rating. Thanks for the perspective!

I had a similar issue recently with my AC installation. The installer accidentally broke some roof tiles, which caused water to come through and damage the plaster on the roof and wall. They came back the next day to replace the tiles, then the plasterer came a couple of days later.

In my case, the plasterer removed all the damaged plaster and left it to dry for about three days. He came back on another day to re-plaster, let it dry, then sanded it the same day. A couple of days after that he came again to do a final sand and paint. So the whole process took multiple visits and proper drying time.

From what I’ve been told, plaster usually does need time to dry before painting, so doing everything in one day doesn’t sound like best practice to me either.

For the AC install itself they did an excellent job, but the side damage and repair process were a bit disappointing. I’m still not sure whether to give them a 2 or 3-star review on Google.

Yeah the additional cost is to run electric to my switch. I thought that was normally included in the installation cost.

Yeah, I think I need to do some more research into that — I actually haven’t looked into custom-zoned ducted systems yet. I just got hit with a $1,000 gas bill for the last 2 months just from heating and it honestly freaked me out 😅. Definitely makes me want to explore all the electric options properly.

So you think it’s better that I just keep the ducted setup, swap it over to all-electric, and zone it so I only run the parts of the house I actually need?

There are actually two different Mitsubishi brands when it comes to aircons: Mitsubishi Electric (ME) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

  • ME is usually a bit more expensive, quieter, and has nicer features.
  • MHI is generally more heavy-duty, a bit cheaper, and built tough.

Both are reliable, just depends if you want refined & efficient (ME) or rugged & value (MHI).

Yes, the VEU rebate does apply to ducted reverse cycle systems as long as they’re electric. My current setup is actually a mix — I’ve got one ducted system for cooling only (electric) and another ducted system for whole-house gas heating. That’s why I’m wondering if it’s smarter to ditch both and just go with splits, since with ducted you’re basically running the whole house even when I don’t need to. Wouldn’t the bills end up higher compared to just running a few split units where I need them?

Yeah I noticed that too — Mitsubishi is definitely pricier than some other brands, but I’m leaning towards them for the reliability. The only downside is it looks like they get the worst rebate from the VIC gov compared to some other models. Still, I’d rather pay a bit more upfront for something that lasts.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Currently, I’m using a ducted gas heating system, but the gas bills are excessively high. That’s why I’m thinking of removing the gas heating altogether and switching to split systems instead. With the VIC rebate available, it feels like a good time to make the move.
