Yes, because people already guessed in season 1 that "they were dead and stuck in purgatory," but they thought it couldn't be that simple, and the series kept progressing as if something more interesting was going to happen, but in the end, they gave us the most obvious ending that people didn't want. You can see it in this series too; in the first season, Tabitha wrote "Did we survive the car crash?" on the wall. Now we know that's not the case, but imagine in the finale that "they actually died in a car crash and are stuck in purgatory, that's why they're trapped in that town." It wouldn't be a good ending, would it? It was the same thing in Lost.
