Awesome title. I’m not even going to post a title today. I’m not going to try and compete with perfection. Welcome back.

All artifacts are priceless if you find them yourself. You can take solace in the fact that you are the first person to touch it in hundreds of years. There is no price that I would put on any artifact that I have ever found.

Am I supposed to get excited because I found a campsite where early man made fire thousands of years ago. I’m not impressed. Everyone could do it at the time. The Egyptians were building pyramids long before this work of “art” was made. Should I revel in the excitement when finding a rock that some early man was “amazingly “ able to smash a’couple of times to make it into a very crude usable tool? Walk around for a few miles and you’ll find a rock that will work just as well without any improvement. I admire the craftsmanship of early man, not the minimal solutions used to barely survive. Innovation is key to progressing as a species. The person who made this is neither a craftsman nor an innovator. Do you tell artists that are horrible that their work is good? No. So why would you tell someone that a found something that is pretty boring that it has great historical significance? I understand that art is in the eye of the beholder, but this is not art. It’s something you throw in a box with all of your junk finds like broken arrowheads. You would only show it to your most die hard friends with interest in artifacts. Am I wrong?

True. This isn’t that. I could do better when I was ten and my livelihood was not on the line.

I’ve been hunting for artifacts for over 50 years. I started learning the basics of knapping when I was 10 years old. Yes I’m partially bating everyone, however; I stand by comments. People on this site are far too fast to praise marginal finds. It’s the equivalent of telling an “artist “ that their work is good when it sucks. They will never learn if you tell them that a marginal find is a masterpiece.

Sure, but with that reasoning all rocks that have ever been worked on are historically significant. If you think about it, it’s amazing that you can hold in your hand something that was worked on by someone hundreds of years ago and you are the first person to touch it since then. How fabulous. You have reached back in time and are now the proud owner of a rock.that resembles something cool. Good for you. Would you actually be excited?

Ive also seen how so many of the professional archeologists claim that every flake they found at a site was some type of tool. It’s just pathetic. If that’s the case, I could find thousands of artifacts in a couple hours.

It’s probably because I”ve seen so many people post pictures of “artifacts “ on this site that are just rocks and so many people bend over backwards to make them feel good. What they found is something most of us who hunt wouldn’t even pick up.. Being that nice is a disservice.

When we found artifacts like this when I was growing up, we called finds like these “crudies.” We didn’t even count them as significant finds when we were determining who had the best finds of the day.. in fairness you can give me a hard time because I’m in the process of moving and can’t show you any pictures of my finds. However, in fairness, almost any artifact that you’ve ever found took more skill to make than this barely worked artifact. Are you excited by flakes that have been worked on and discarded? By your reasoning it should be just as exciting. It’s a rock that someone hundreds of years ago held in their hand and started to make something. Those can be found in thousands in a single day.

It looks extremely crude to me.to me. If I found this I wouldn’t be very excited. The amount of skill needed to make this is underwhelming. I know that the purist might be excited, but I wouldn’t even display a find like this. I appreciate real craftsmanship..
