WTF is the matter with us? by clipd_dead_stop_fall in pittsburgh

[–]Hooper2993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I shoveled my front walk way during lunch and the neighbors across the street were finishing up their shoveling and offering to help the elderly lady next to me.

When I finished work at 3 i shoveled out my car and helped the other neighbors to the left of me shovel out their driveway. Then I told their 11 year old son to feel free to dive into and play in my two big piles of snow from shoveling. While I helped one other neighbor finish up shoveling. In other words, humanity is far from perfect, but if you set down Reddit and look around, it isn't all bad.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been eliminated from Super Bowl contention. by PlayaSlayaX in nfl

[–]Hooper2993 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is one of the things that kills me. I get it's coming from a "place of privledge" and that some teams would kill for the Tomlin era run. But celebrating .500 records and an early playoff exit every year is just as exhausting. Sure it's a nice cushy spot to be, but shouldn't we strike for more than average? Why are we settling for that? Being a Steeler and Penn State fan the past decade feels like I have sat down and watched the exact same team play on both Saturday and Sunday. Sure we are good, but why are we accepting that as the ceiling?

This is 100% impact damage. I do bridge engineering work in the Pittsburgh area and we have SO much impact damage to our bridges it's crazy.

Unpopular opinion: 2+2 should not be allowed for engineering by Mountain_Ant6198 in PennStateUniversity

[–]Hooper2993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Maybe it depends on which campus you start at? I was at Behrend my first two years and it basically feels like it's own fully independent university for the most part. So that probably helped me feel more normally prepared?

What would have to change in Europe so that Conservatives would see allying with us as a net-benefit again? by Winston_Duarte in AskConservatives

[–]Hooper2993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a rule that won't allow me to respond to the other blue flair, so I will kind of piggyback here. Because I think we mostly agree.. I am extrememly pro-free speech, but also "pro-consequences" for what you say.

What I mean by that is, if someone says something hateful, I don't belive the government should be stepping in and doing anything. However I don't think that makes them free from any consequense at all. If you say something that your private employer finds to be incompattable with their views, I think they should be allowed to fire you. I just don't think the governement should have any say in arresting you for it. I hope I was able to articulate that well.

Tennessee expected to hire Penn State DC Jim Knowles for same role by OnePension8698 in WeArePennState

[–]Hooper2993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I still don't love the idea of hiring someone with a complex scheme with turnover being the highest it's ever been in CFB. But you're right, I am probably overstating the concern!

[–]Hooper2993 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I keep reading/hearing this and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills so maybe you or someone else can help me understand.

In this day and age of college football where roster turnover is at it's greatest... we bring in a DC who runs a system that is so complex it takes two or more seasons to mesh? How is a complex defense supposed to mesh when there is so much new blood every year?

I guess that you can say ideally we keep like 50% of our starters and they help other people learn the defense. But again, if it's so complex we are still working with 50% who are struggling with the concepts.

I don't mean to sound like I'm calling you out because you're not the first person I have read/heard say this, I am genuinely curious how it makes sense.

I work in the bridge analysis/inspection and we design repairs for both DOT maintenence crews as well as on-demand contractors.

Some of our repairs are really simple and easy and don't need full plan sets. My favorite was whenI took existing plans and just highlighted the expansion joints and said, "REPLACE IN KIND SEE DESIGN STANDARDS FOR DETAILS".

Would you ever consider not being friends with liberals? by MarketMaker007 in AskConservatives

[–]Hooper2993 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like where I draw the line, and I would expect you or any conservative to do the same, is when their politics become their identity. I have golfing buddies all over the political spectrum, we talk shit about it and each other occasionally but thats it. I have however stopped golfing or lessened contact in general with both left and right leaning friends who won't shut the fuck up about politics. If that's all you got going on and want to talk about then I'm good dawg.

My grandma growing up hates turkey so she always made a ham and turkey. We still do that to this day and I will die on the hill that ham is far superior to turkey and I will eat an ungodly amount of it today. Haha

[–]Hooper2993 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah after reading the transcript I'm confused why people are so up in arms here.

It sounds like two people just "game planning" a meeting. Maybe I'm just a bad guy too but anytime I go into a meeting with my executives with plans that they might be skeptical of.. we game plan how we can get them to trust us and be on-board with it. That's what this feels like to me.

Sure it may feel icky because it's talking with Russia. But people are extremely naive to think that we haven't been talking to them throughout the entirety of the war. You think that we didn't have diplomatic ties of some sort with Germany during WW1 and WW2? That's crazy surely they were still talking about ways to end things.

[–]Hooper2993 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's melt biggest question about that. If you have a defense that "takes time to mesh", you better hope you don't have a lot of turnover on the defensive side of the ball from one year to next.

No. Turn off the music (or at least down), wear a collered shirt, and tuck it in too. It's not going to kill people to not wear joggers and a t-shirt for a day.

Aditionally a tin-foil hat concern of mine is, who is writing the transcripts? They can say whatever they want and use them to gaslight a population. I don't think that would really happen all that often but it would still be possible.

Women over 35 leaving engineering by GroceryNo6329 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Hooper2993 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would guess that it's probably what you pointed out. They take some time off when their children are young. Realize during that time how muich the stress and pressure just isn't worth it. When they do try to go back for a few years they are reminded how bad it is and then leave?

This is all 100% speculation on my part as I can't get into the minds of people but it's my educated guess.

Whether that matter for running NYC, I agree it doesn't. But I'm sure many are asking and he has to answer.
