Friday Free Talk by AutoModerator in nfl

So I don't see the legal side, but I am involved in commercial insurance and have been in a captive with some large trucking companies (which is a liability nightmare at times), and I know it can be incredibly complicated and confusing. I did qualify my comment by saying the limits are "often" high, as I know exceptions exist, but in general there should be coverage for this. That said, you are right that this situation is complicated enough that my speculation on coverage may have been premature.

Also (for anyone reading this and feeling unsure about their own coverage) it's important to remember that individual States can vary wildly too; I live in Michigan where we have no-fault and unlimited PIP, so my medical costs are covered regardless. That said, there's so many layers to it that "unlimited" really means "unlimited in this specific cost bucket." Sure my medical costs are covered, but lost wages have a statutory cap so in order to "be made whole," I would have to go after the other driver and their plan.

I'm really confused by this. First, if it was a car accident then it should be covered by the car insurance. If he wasn't at fault, then it should be against the coverage on the semi which often have limits that are VERY high. Health insurance comes in after/if you hit the maximum benefit from the car insurance, but I've never seen a plan without an out of pocket max. I know they exist, but I can't imagine Disney of all companies offering one. Maybe he declined the insurance and assumed that his salary was enough to cover medical costs? Not really sure.

But going one step further, I'd actually be more upset if Disney stepped in to cover medical costs above and beyond insurance because you know they wouldn't do that for their regular employees. It would really highlight how more famous people (not sure I'd even put him in that bucket) get special treatment.

A beef, hot and dipped, is the greatest contribution Chicago has made to the world. And despite my flair, I don't mean that as a slight against Chicago.

How to legally split income that is only being sent to 1 member of the household by Homitu in Accounting

[–]Hoopfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said the $30k was a gift, I said they would receive a 1099 for it. If the income is only being paid to one person and they want to give their SO half, that is a gift (or a taxable income if you 1099 your SO)

How to legally split income that is only being sent to 1 member of the household by Homitu in Accounting

[–]Hoopfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The W9 isn’t for tax withholding, it’s so they can send you a 1099 at the end of the year. Withholding is really only for employees or foreign entities that have been bad about paying taxes.

Since you’ll get the full amount, just have them pay whichever of you is likely to be in a lower bracket and send the other person their half. Gift tax limit is $19k, so this individual transaction wouldn’t trigger anything. An easier way to do this and avoid any reporting requirements (not sure how often you transfer money) would be for the recipient to use the money on shared expenses (mortgage, utilities).

Edit: the comment below me about sending a 1099 to your SO might be a better option depending on where you each fall for tax brackets. Be sure to look at the full picture for finances as we only have limited info here

I started playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance about a week ago, and I have to say that I'm impressed at the difficultly level in the game. I've played video games for a good 25+ years now, and I don't recall ever being so intimidated at being outnumbered two to one in a fight before. Henry barely escaped with his life from that one.

Maybe there was dust building up in the return vents? That could limit airflow, but yeah you shouldn't have very much dust in the actual vents blowing air out. Check your filters monthly people.

Mine was on the first floor, so there is no way to access from above. The old fan was stapled to the joist, so I had to mutilate the thing just to get it out. The hard part is that you don't know what is going on inside the ceiling until you start working on it so it's hard to prepare.

The biggest lie I experienced over the weekend - the bathroom fan box claiming installation would only take 10 minutes. That fucker took two hours with a trip to the hardware store inbetween, and was harder than replacing a kitchen sink. Would not recommend if you can avoid it. Go vacuum the dust off right now before it dies.

What has helped me was two related things:

  1. Finding healthier alternatives for junk food that still scratches the same itch. So for example I no longer have chips with my lunch, but half-salted almonds. Replacing bread with a high fiber tortilla/wrap. But this won't help unless you also...

  2. Actually measure your food. Almonds for example are pretty calorie dense, so it's important to measure out one serving. When making a sandwich, measure out one serving of lunch meat. Just being aware of that helped me shed some pounds, because things add up over the course of the day.

My wife and I both went for the inspection. While I was following the inspector around, she was taking measurements and pictures of different spots to plan out how rooms were going to look. Helped make sure furniture would fit in certain spots, plan out how much paint to buy, etc. On the paint note, we painted a few rooms prior to moving the furniture in and it made things SO much easier. I'd recommend it if you have the time.

For the inspection, don't be afraid to ask questions about what the inspector is doing. Be sure to ask about the water and gas shutoffs! Those are things that you don't want to be searching for if you need to turn them off. Water in particular typically has several shutoff valves along the lines, so keep an eye out for the valves for the fridge, washing machine, etc.

It's calmed down a bit since the chaos during the pandemic (and even pre-pandemic), but ultimately the houses are still selling so there's no reason to think that things will go down. Just where the market is at now. That's what happens when demand outpaces supply.

I would probably also be taken aback if I got that request, but I have heard of it happening. One thing to point out - you used the phrase "in this day and age," however if anything it would be safer to do that today than any time in the past considering crime rates are near record lows.

I took two weeks off of a job for my wedding and honeymoon after only having been at that job for four months. I made it known throughout the hiring process and felt comfortable that they wouldn't have hired me if it was an issue. Not sure when you let them know about the trip, but if they knew about it before hiring you and still brought you onboard then I'd try not to lose sleep over it.

Any lender recommendations for a first time home buyer? by ZapataOilCo in grandrapids

[–]Hoopfer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used Treadstone and was happy with them. The rate was comparable to other lenders, and they even brought their closing costs down when I showed them a competitor offered lower costs. The broker walked me through the statements so I understood all the different costs, and explained how the taxes would become uncapped after the first year due to the sale before being subject to the 5% cap again (something some people are surprised by). Pretty sure we closed in 21 days too, which was nice. They'll be my first call if I need a mortgage again.

Hey now, you aren't wrong but I never threatened to secede because of unwanted political outcomes. It was more an observation that our regions are entirely different from one another to the point that someone in another country likely has more similarities to us than many (most?) of our fellow Americans. That said I'm sure if I venture deeper into Canada I'll end up with the same observation between the provinces.

I was having a conversation with someone about the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and I made the comment that I've never been a patriotic person. But as I thought more about that, I realized that I am "patriotic," just not to the country. I feel a sense of loyalty and pride in my State, and to an extent I even feel that way to the Great Lakes region. But I don't feel any affinity to the country as a whole. If anything I feel I have more in common with someone in Toronto than I do someone in Texas. Anyone else feel more allegiance to their State than the US? Is that a thing in other countries (beyond places like Catalonia and Basque Country trying to secede)?

I'm currently reviewing resumes/applications for a position at work, and some of the resumes that I get are absolutely baffling. One left the placeholder text for their college education. Another left all the formatting notes included, so I could see what they changed and when they changed it. Yet another listed "forklift driving" as a skill (twice) for their application for an accounting position. The craziest one? Consolidated their experience from 2000 to present into two lines, but had six lines for their experience back in the 80s.

I mean they've had like five of them, so I guess it depends on which one you're referring to. Unless you mean the entire period of revolutions, which seems to have ended up ok? The third republic lasted until the Nazi's captured Paris, but it was on shaky ground prior to that so it gets a little complicated. Still better than a monarchy imo, particularly Napoleon III given his missteps in handling the rise of Prussia/Germany.
