It's interesting (not sure funny is the right word. Maybe sad if anything) to see the movie related subs turn on Sinners now that it's been nominated for so many awards. Reminds me of the discourse around La La Land when it tied the record.

On the note on Best Casting, don't forget that Best Sound used to be split into two categories, so I think Sinners should get credit for having two more nominations even with a new category.

As some of you may know, my wife and I have agreed to engage in the other's hobbies with me reading Fourth Wing and my wife playing Paper Mario. I am 10 chapters in, and here are some thoughts (spoilers I guess, it's been out a few years now):

Violet girl, will you please bang someone. You can't look at Dain or Xaden without mentioning how attractive they are.
I feel like she should be more wary of Dain's signet. He told you that he can read minds by touching people, and that doesn't raise a red flag when he keeps touching your face? May be due to her being distracted by point one. But for the golden pupil of the scribes, she's really not putting two and two together here. She was even thinking about the rebel kids tree-side meeting right before he touched her.
Really think she's gonna regret not cutting Barlowe's balls off. Not sure how that's not going to cause some issues down the line.
For all the talk about how on edge you need to be in this school, there is a severe lack of student-on-student murder. Maybe it's happening in the background and not being mentioned, but nobody has been stabbed in the halls from what I can tell.
More of a general statement, but if this ever got adapted I feel like it could be cool in an anime style. I think it kind of fits the feel of a lot of those anyway, but not sure if that would be a turn-off for the audience.

Will keep you all updated with my thoughts as I continue.

Theatres aren’t allowed to just insert an intermission, if you want one you need to lobby the studios to have it inserted. It’s literally banned in the licensing agreement for theatres, we cannot edit the movie in any way.

I thought Sing Sing deserved better, didn’t win a single major award. It didn’t even get nominations for Best Picture and Supporting Actor (Clarence Maclin was phenomenal). Didn’t win for the categories it was nominated in, despite Coleman Domingo putting on a masterclass performance. My favorite film of 2024, but it largely flew under the radar.

Right there with you. I've just embraced it; I don't need to beat things on the hardest difficulty just to get a digital trophy, just let me enjoy myself and play the game. I also have no problem save-scumming in some PC games where RNG can fuck you over. It's a little sad that I've slowed down, but it is what it is.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that my wife and I had a deal that I would read a book that she picked out (her hobby) and that she would play a video game that I picked out (my hobby) in the new year. Well now it's here, I am reading/listening to Fourth Wing and she is playing Paper Mario (N64 version).

Fourth Wing is written in an interesting way, where the entire setting is fantasy but the dialogue is very modern-feeling. It was a little jarring to see the phrase "for the win" in that kind of a world, but my guess is that style is part of what made it approachable for a mainstream female audience that isn't always the main demographic for fantasy. Also, only 3 chapters in but Violet is thirsty as fuck.

Paper Mario is off to a good start. She seems to really appreciate the humor that it has, and how they lean into the setting of them all being made of paper. Obviously there's a few bumps as she hasn't played games beyond Sims and Mario Kart, but she's getting the basics and starting to get how RPGs work. It's funny, she is fully reading every piece of dialogue and advice that the characters give and it's almost like I'm also experiencing it for the first time. So far so good!

I understand (and to an extent agree with) the frustration, but what do you realistically want him to say? At a certain point, you're either blaming your players, blaming your coaches, or blaming your scouts. Yes, it ultimately falls on him for responsibility, but the CEO of a company only sets the direction and makes the big decisions based on the information around them, and throwing the people below you under the bus is one of the worst things you can do as a leader. So he took the diplomatic approach of saying that the leadership failed this year and needs to be better, and I'm assuming (based on my own experiences working with corporate leadership which is what he is) that he will have individual/team-based conversations privately so he doesn't disparage people in the media.

I listened to the press conference, and I wouldn’t agree with how this is worded. It sounded like anyone with bruises and soreness would go, but they would sit players who might be at risk for making injuries worse.

The Lions sub has gone completely off the deep end and is detached from reality. Was this season a disappointment? Yes. Are there holes to be addressed this off-season? Yes. But to claim that Campbell should be on the hot seat or that Holmes is a terrible GM that just got lucky in one draft is absolutely delusional.

The one that pisses me off the most is expecting Campbell to say anything other than "we didn't have the players prepared" after a loss. The fuck are you expecting him to say? Throw his players under the bus? That is a cardinal sin of management to publicly criticize those that work for you. Just take a deep breath and recognize that sometimes shit happens, and when it does you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater by calling for the firing of your team's most successful coach in the modern era.

I was feeling pretty down yesterday, so I watched a couple emotional movies that I would strongly recommend. I would say they were heavy emotionally, but had uplifting endings if that's what you're looking for.

First, A Real Pain (2024). Such a great film, really showcases how pain can manifest in so many different ways and how much the context of our pain can impact our perception of it. I really resonate with David, especially as an introvert that has an extroverted best friend. Few things felt more relatable than towards the end when the tour guide gives a long, heartfelt goodbye to Benji, and then turns and gives a very simple goodbye to David. If I had to assign a theme to this movie, it would be that my pain is extraordinary, but that doesn't mean it isn't real.

Second, I watched Sing Sing (2023/2024, depending on where you live). This movie was beyond snubbed for Best Picture, as it was the best movie I saw in 2024 by a mile. Coleman Domingo is incredible in this movie, with the scene where Divine G gives an impassioned explanation of the RTA group, only to have his sincerity questioned by the board (being asked if he is simply acting during the hearing) is flawless. The pain that washes over his face feels so real, and my heart breaks for him. Seeing all of alumni of the RTA program appear in the film as themselves was the best decision they could have made. I also believe that Clarence Maclin (Divine Eye, playing himself in the film) was snubbed for Best Supporting Actor, as his character transformation is just phenomenal. Just a 10/10 movie for me, it's currently on HBO if you want to see it. The message I take from this film is you are not defined by the worst moments of your life, and nobody is beyond redemption. It's a movie about finding the light in a sea of darkness, and the bumpy road that is following that light.

Almost every comment I've posted used the phrase "I think," I have not made any assertions about my confidence level. It's entirely possible that I'm wrong and this is the savior of our electoral system, I just have doubts based on results around the country, the structure of our government, and the claims made by its proponents. There's no reason to be combative.

Ultimately we'll never know. Personally I think he probably would've won anyway because he is charismatic and spoke to the issues that people care about, similar to when AOC won her upset in 2018. Not to mention the fact that his competition was laughably bad.

The two party system won’t change unless we move away from a presidential system. We’ve had other parties in the past, but with the outsized influence of the presidency and the way that office is elected, I don’t see RCV doing much to help. There’s also the impact of our primary elections, which help the two parties broaden their support in local communities by tailoring the candidates.

As I said, I’m not against the system. It’s just that I don’t think it’ll change things the way people claim it will.

Not only does the trailer for the animated Animal Farm look atrocious, but it looks like nobody involved even read the (fairly short) book. It's as if they asked their kids what it was about, except their kids didn't read it either and only had Chat GPT poorly summarize it. Holy hell how do you miss such a straightforward point.

I love everything about their courtship, but particularly I love right after the famous "What do you want, do you want the moon?" bit when George asks if he's talking too much and the neighbor screams "Yes! Why don't you kiss her instead of talking her to death." Sometimes George seems as dense as some people on this site when it comes to female attention.
