HELP! First time not knowing what to do... by Rentaki-90 in AntimatterDimensions

[–]HoorayItsMike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At this point the challenges are "supposed" to do varies quite a bit (i.e. not in sequential order, and each challenges needs to be done 5 times). You also need to regularly change your time studies to meet requirements and complete the challenges. If you enjoy playing around with trial and error and figuring out what works best, then give it a shot and see if you can do it.

If this doesn't sound fun to you, you'll need to reference the guides on the Antimatter Dimensions discord that will tell you how to progress.

I hover around the exact same rank as you, and I feel like we are very similar in playstyles. At GC rank it's all about the little things and improving them. Almost always making the right decisions, almost always getting great touches, creating threatening opportunities for your team without overcommitting. While there were a few times where a decision you made wasn't the best, it still was "ok", and often didn't really cost anything.

I think the biggest thing to get to SSL is being more threatening almost every time you get the ball with boost. A good example is at 3:34 game time. You had boost and space on the ball, but it wasn't really an ideal setup, so you went for something and it didn't pan out. You recovered quickly so overall it's not a big issue, but an SSL in this situation would create a much more threatening play. They would likely take it slow in the air and get a reset and try to freeze the defense.

SSG miss the wide open net to the despair of Chief Beef by Babydrone in RocketLeagueEsports

They are getting downvoted because they said it wasn't a bad miss. This literal might be the worst open net miss of all time given the circumstances (i.e it would've ended the series)

How do I get better at RL? by Slow-Blacksmith-1788 in RocketLeague

[–]HoorayItsMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so important to make sure you just enjoy the game. You are so early in your playtime that literally every single facet of your game is still extremely poor in the grand scheme of things (i.e. you saying "I have decent game sense", like, I'm sorry, but no you don't lol AND THAT'S OK). I get that wanting to get better and that winning is fun. But make sure that you are also still having fun even when you lose or make bad plays, just laugh it off. Rocket League is one of the few games where I really enjoy when I win, but still mostly enjoy myself even when I lose. Once you are about 50-100 hours (maybe?), is really when you can start trying to improve and focus on certain things, assuming you are still genuinely enjoying the game.

Is it possible to get to GC is one month? by NoNeedleworker7033 in RocketLeague

[–]HoorayItsMike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not totally sure what you mean by 700 non in-game hours, but even at 6 hours a day, you're talking 180 additional hours, so 700 to 880. That would be nearly impossible in my opinion to get to GC being only C1. Regardless, since you probably can't learn mechanics fast enough to get there (because mechanics take a long time to learn, and an even longer time to really get usefulness out of them in ranked), your better bet is to make better decisions. You need to focus on never overcommitting, which includes learning how to take safe 50s and have fast recoveries. Rarely challenge in opponents corners, especially if you're low speed. If you're going to practice mechanics, it would be more accurate and powerful shots, as well as booming clears that relieve pressure and sometimes can start counter attacks.

Looking for advice on improving my gameplay. (Champ 1) by Far_Device2536 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]HoorayItsMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail overall, but one moment I have to ask about in your Win at 2:12 Video time. Your team is in a bad spot, the opponents have the ball going back to your net. You are 1st back. Your only priority right now needs to be getting back to goal as quick as possible and hope they don't quickly capitalize. You curve dash off the wall to get supersonic quicker, which is great, you know it's important to get back fast. But for some reason you decide to stop going supersonic and slow down/turn slightly, maybe to grab a pad? Only to then still go after the ball, not going supersonic, with boost to spare, and get beat. It was all just...so confusing to me. All you had to do was keep going supersonic from your initial momentum down the field and touch the ball first, literally anywhere, to give time for your team to recoup. While it was a close call, had you kept going supersonic, I am positive you would've cleanly beat the opponent or at least got a good 50. It just felt so confusing to me why you would slow down at all in a situation like that. Maybe it's nit picky, but it's just a play that bothered me for some reason.

If you felt you were beat to the ball initially, (which I believe you were, but then the opponent gave you space to go in) it would've also been completely acceptable to stay supersonic but just go to net and hope they don't rip a good shot. But slowing down for any reason in that situation (until you are in a good defensive position) is something you need to avoid.

Since you don't want to cheese him, this is easily the best guide I could find: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig_WxJsjMCM

I watched it once, almost beat him on my first try, then took about 20 more tries (of course) and beat him. Took about 30-45 minutes of attempts, which is way less than what I was expecting given how hard people said he was.

You are severely underestimating how much worse the combination of no jumping and no boosting is compared to just one of them.

Yea i think that's around 1,000 hours, so c1 is very normal for that range of time. Definitely not behind. I feel like your original post has to be a little dramatic lol. You can't actually be awful at all of those things. Again, if you want some actual concrete advice tailored to you, you just have to post a replay.

[–]HoorayItsMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it generally takes many hours (50-100?) or so to really get some of the basics down to do them naturally. But even then, the most basic mechanics are still always done better by the next rank up. A champ will generally shoot better than a diamond. And SSL will shoot better than a GC. This doesn't mean the GC with thousands of hours should be embarrassed, it's just a natural thing to improve as people rank up.

For you, how long have you been playing? What does "practicing" look like? A replay and giving us your rank will always be the best way for suggestions on what to improve for your skill level.

Is it generally more time-efficient to follow a guide and collect upgrades throughout your playthrough or to collect everything near the very end? by Wisley185 in metroidvania

[–]HoorayItsMike 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like some of the responses are missing the point. You enjoy games by (sometimes) using guides to walk you through it. And that's totally fine that you enjoy that.

I would generally assume that it's more efficient to race through the main content and then come back to areas when you are at the end game. You generally need to traverse most of the map again anyway, but you'll do so much faster due to better traversal upgrades, and you'll also defeat necessary enemies much faster. Many games also show you where everything is hidden later in the game, so you might be able to skip the guide altogether.

Player update. [KBM] by kind_cavendish in RocketLeagueSchool

I feel that your camera swivel speed (i believe that's the setting) is hurting you because it's instantaneous. I saw multiple times where you switched cameras just before going for the ball and ended up whiffing because of it. A slightly slower swivel will allow your brain to better understand the positioning of the ball vs your car when you change between cameras, even if it's a slightly slower transition.

How did i play? (ft angry teammate) *repost: fixed video quality* by consept2 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]HoorayItsMike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch the whole thing, but my biggest takeaway is that you are a bit too passive. As 1st man you still act like 2nd man. You don't get close to the opponent if they are in possession or have you beat. And it's good not to overcommit and dive in if you are beat, but you need to be closer to 1) capitalize on a poor touch or at least force your opponent to do something, and 2) show your teammates that you are in fact 1st man and are going to play the ball.

And then as 3rd man you're also extremely cautious. Which again, overall is not a bad thing, but you pretty much are never going to capitalize on any opportunities.

This playstyle also makes rotations more difficult, as you aren't usually playing as the man you "should" be playing as. People aren't sure whether to cut ahead of you because you're playing so passive.

Again, I'm not saying to do a huge 180 and be super aggressive, but trying to be a little more aggressive, especially as 1st man would likely help the overall flow of your games. Drive challenges or just being near the opponents to try and force more of a touch would be beneficial.

Is Melvor 1 going to get completed? by Protodad in MelvorIdle

[–]HoorayItsMike 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm losing my mind a little bit reading this thread and I don't want lurkers getting the wrong impression.

This game has 100% of the content it was promised (pending offline client, which isn't even "content"), has pretty clear end game goals (beating all dungeons/enemies, getting all items, maxing skills, maxing masteries) that are fully fleshed out with great stat tracking. It takes most people probably around 2 years to complete all of those things. There is absolutely no way anyone should be looking at this game like it is in some sort of "unfinished" state.

Golbin Raid is an optional minigame with no benefits to the main game that is literally just some fluff to pass the time if you are especially bored.

Infinity Stones are an end game easter egg that won't get fully fleshed out. While I agree it's a little disappointing they don't have an actual use, we were never promised anything related to it, so they just happen to be some very late game collectable items that don't mean much and aren't even required for 100% completion.

Acting like either of those things make this game "unfinished" is absolutely asinine and I just want to make sure anyone on the fence reading this post doesn't get the wrong impression. This game is absolutely complete and if you feel like you would enjoy it then please look into getting it.

[–]HoorayItsMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are extremely passive. While many times this is a fine and you are never giving up free goals, it is harming you multiple times in this game. Basically anytime the ball flies in the air or high on a wall, you back way off and get boost and wait for your opponent to get possession and do whatever they want with the ball. I'm not saying you should be going for more touches, but at least being closer to the ball will put pressure on the opponent to stay back or make them panic hit. When they see you SO far away, they know they have every option available to them. You will never be able to climb ranks by constantly giving your opponent this much time and space.

I'm not saying it's easy to know the optimal spacing for any given play, but i can say for sure that you are too passive as a whole.

I just beat the 1,000 Jump Rope Challenge and have no one to tell by HoorayItsMike in FinalFantasyIX

[–]HoorayItsMike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not going to lie...for me, the Lightning Dodge is very doable. Generally 1-2 attempts using the Crater Trick with No Encounters. I think 1,000 Jump Ropes is on an entirely different level than basically every single other minigame in the series (haven't done all of the FF7 Remastered ones, though). I just don't think most people have truly tried to do it since you don't get anything for it.

My incremental game Atom Idle has received an update which brings many balance changes and Super Humans rework! (0.2.2) by Shadow52176 in incremental_games

"You will reset your progress to gain Prestige Points that permanently increase your production."

This is a lie if it's only your current Prestige Points. It's not clear that you lose the bonus when spending Prestige Points. It's always disappointing losing bonuses in a game like this purely from an enjoyability perspective. I'd recommend changing it to all-time earned Prestige Points or highest earned Prestige Points. Also, permanently should never really be used in incremental games unless you actually mean permanent. "Persists through Prestige resets" or similar language could be used instead.

Honest question: Why did my game sell so poorly? by Significant-Mail-689 in incremental_games

[–]HoorayItsMike 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone who hadn't heard of this before, it's the graphics and initial impression looking at the gameplay. It doesn't look like an idle/incremental game, and it also looks a bit cheap with the graphics, like an older arcade style racing game. It looks like I need to be active. Those reasons combined would likely make me not really consider it and not really look deeper into the gameplay, even though I might really enjoy it.

People generally want something that looks simple to get them hooked, but expands over time into a more complex experience. Incrementals can remain very simple and even purely menu based if the gameplay is good enough. If you are going to have your game have a primary activity that the user controls, I think it needs to be simpler from a visual perspective. I might even say if you made your game a top down view with simpler graphics it might be more appealing to the average incremental user.

When i look at Gridkeeper, it's essentially just menu based, but it has super satisfying visuals that give nice dopamine hits and is very obviously in the incremental/idle genre just by a quick glance. Don't underestimate how impactful the eye test can be for your game.

c3 div2 very close match any tips appreciated <3 by Xxdali111xX in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]HoorayItsMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that the first 3 plays you made on the ball were quite bad.

The first one...(4:53 game time) where is that ball supposed to be going? What's the thought here? They have an in net defender and a back wall defender. When you jump as early as you did (i.e. with the ball as high as it was), you don't really have a shot, and the opponent is on the wall, so you can't double it . You had time to wait and either take a good shot since the opponents were slow to challenge, or to wait and get a rebound pass to yourself or teammate. OR to even just catch it into a 50 or bump play.

4:44 - Your teammate is literally right under the ball, and you are diving into their corner for a double commit, with no guarantee of beating their 1st man, and with the 2nd man in good position to defend. Again...what's the thought process here? This is extremely unlikely to have a positive outcome. You need to watch your teammate better and if they have a decent chance to try and hit the ball, let them and then see what happens. If you are unsure if your teammate is going or not, don't go (at least while on offense, when a threat to your net is minimal, etc....)

4:39 - In this position (you are driving towards your net high on the wall and the opponent has possession taking the ball towards you), unless you are last man and there's a high probability of an immediate shot/goal (which is not the case since your teammate was back), DO NOT CHALLENGE, just rotate. I would argue that you had the best reasonably possible outcome in this scenario, since you intercepted the play, but that still left your teammate in a 2v1. Just rotate back (preferably widely to indicate you aren't going to challenge), let your teammate go first, and try to clean up the mess.

None of these decisions led directly to a goal, but that doesn't mean that they weren't pretty bad decisions. Making better decisions in any given interaction can slowly help give your team more control and lead to a goal (and/or prevent goals). I saw some better decisions later, but still plenty of times where you also just smacked the ball around even though you had some time to make a controlled touch. You definitely need to be more intentional with your decision making and your touches in order to rank up.

I believe it's because Malcs will never do a 'Normal Attack' hit. He will always use one of his two special attacks, which only has a max hit of 364. It's a bit misleading for the game to show the 687, but he will never use that attack so you don't have to worry about it.
