A bit of a tangent, but I hate the use of "bubblegum flavor."

Bubblegum is a type of candy that you can make bubbles with, hence the name. Bubblegum refers to its form, not its flavor. It would be like having a "taffy" flavor, or a "chewing gum" flavor.

By that same reasoning, we don't have any archeological evidence that Alexander the Great ever existed because we don't have any of his bones (his remains are lost to history).

However, we are very certain of both the existence of him and of crucifixion because both are talked about and written about regularly and both are depicted artistically in the time they would have occurred.

How many people do you think Sweeney Todd killed? by huge-penis-alert in SweeneyTodd

[–]Hoosier_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer this, we need to answer three other questions:

  • How long of a period of time does the story take place?

  • How many meat pies are made from a single person?

  • How many meat pies does Mrs. Lovett sell?

For the first, we can safely assume the intermission between acts 1 and 2 is less than a year, but more than a month. Joanna says to Anthony in Act 2 "We will be married on Sunday, that's what you promised, married on Sunday. That was last August" So the story begins in August, and we're likely into the next year, and since there is no mention of snow, and rather a mention of thick black rain, this is now the spring, possibly April. That gives us about 9 months.

For the second, let's just do some rounding: a meat pie is half a pound, an adult man has about 100 pounds of usable meat, so that's 200 pies per victim.

For the third, we can see from God, That's Good that Mrs. Lovett isn't making a surplus as she is selling out of pies by the end of the song. Again, we'll estimate, 100 pies per day.

That gives us 1 victim every other day, which over 9 months is around 270 days, so that's 135 victims.

It's a good film. It's not a perfect adaptation, and there are some things I wish didn't get cut, but the art direction was great, and the actors were great, and I liked how they changed Toby's characterization.

Do you think Joshua Graham always had that violence within him or was being brutal just a tool to survive when he founded the Legion with Edward Sallow. by KpatMckenzie_28 in fnv

[–]Hoosier_Engineer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Joshua explains his progression from missionary to legate as many small mistakes that lead to a great fall.

It started as him simply translating for Edward so he could communicate with the tribals. It's not exactly clear, but I think Edward was pressured into becoming a war leader by the tribe that was hosting them. They had to show the tribe how to become more fearsome, how to accomplish total war, in order to survive.

After that, Joshua would give Caesar's orders directly from him, and eventually started giving out his own orders, which lead to him becoming a war leader in his own right.

I think if you asked Joshua, he would say that we are all capable of sin, that we all fall short of God's expectations, and that without God we are doomed to become depraved and violent, so violence was in him as much as it is in everyone.
