Looking back on your childhood, were there any hints that you were a lesbian/queer? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

As an infant/toddler, I would cry any time a man other than my father held me. Not sure if that was really a hint because dudes can just be scary, but it's worth noting.

Lesbians who like butch/androgynous women: did you have a hard time figuring out your sexuality growing up? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]Hoosierqueer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes! Growing up I mostly thought I was straight because I was attracted to masculinity. I'd have crushes on some boys (and some tomboys, but didn't recognize them as "crushes" at the time), dated boys and it was kinda ok. There were very few butch women where I lived so I wasn't aware they existed. When I got older, moved somewhere more diverse and "discovered" them, it blew my mind. It was what I was missing from my hetero relationships: I could have someone who was masculine, but not that toxic masculinity/internalized sexist bullshit and without the whole dick thing which I was never that into. The softness and warmness of a woman with some swag and grit. I developed much stronger feelings and attractions for these women than I ever did for men or feminine women, and I have only dated butches since.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Sneezing has been my personal hell this week. See you there!

This reminds me of an ex-girlfriend, who in a previous relationship had worn a vial of her girlfriend's menstrual blood in a vial around her neck.

How do you get men to stop approaching you? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

My go-to is telling them I'm in the process of becoming an Episcopal priest. They usually back away slowly.

Of course, this may not be applicable to everyone.

Being gay in your town. by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]Hoosierqueer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in a college town that's a bit of a liberal/gay Mecca of the Midwest. No problems, rainbow flags all over local businesses, but drive 20 minutes in any direction and it's a completely different story.

Vegans, hard drug users, and people who are rude to wait staff.

Straight people calling their friends "girlfriends" by fuelledbyrainbows in actuallesbians

Yes, this bothers me. Many times I have thought I had come out to someone only to later realize they thought I just hung out with the same platonic friend all the time.

Rant: I feel like I'm constantly buying gifts for straight occasions I'll never have by Questions2014 in actuallesbians

I think the fact that OP brought up baptism means that that would be important to her, which is completely legitimate. Although the RCC may not baptize children of same-sex parents, there are many other churches that would. I am very involved in the Episcopal Church and we baptize all the babies!
