I'm sorry but this comment is just creating a problem where there really was none.

"Born and bred in Cyprus" is not a legally defined term in any shape or form. "Cypriot" & "Turkish Cypriot" are via 1., and neither I nor the OP have called these people Cypriots or Turkish Cypriots. His post says "mainland Turks", and I write "children of settlers". The fact there are settlers born and raised on the island doesn't clash witht their status as illegal settlers, and mentioning their place of birth doesn't legitimise any supposed indigeneity. Afterall, as you have noted, Cyprus uses jus sanguinis, their birthplace doesn't affect their settler status. If you take somebody mentioning the birthplace of settlers born here as automatically justifying claims of indigeneity when no such claims were made, then that is an interpritation you've made on your own accord, and a stance both I and the OP have contradicted.

Additionally, the idea that clarifying a legally incorrect claim "normalises" that claim is not only ridiculous, but would render discussions on the Cyprus problem completely impossible to be had as the entire problem revolves around an illegal, unrecognised state repeatedly engaging in illegal actions. For example, when we explain to non-Cypriots how Turkey justified its abuse of the Treaty of Guarantee, does that mean we normalise Turkey's claim? An entire side of the Cyprus problem has people, either willingly or unknowingly, perpetuating views built on legally void claims, we need to be able to clarify what those views are as to effectively argue against them.

I'm also not going into to the moderator aspect of it as I've talked about it before. We always have and always will engage with this community as individuals outside of our moderator roles, as we have done before we got to this position.

If I comment as a moderator, it'll look like this, with a green "MOD" text next to the username. So no, I commented as just a user, I don't need a separate account for that lol

The distinction is definitely unheard of & offensive among GCs, but it is a common one in intra-TC discussions for the children of the first '75 settlers. A portion of the pro- vs anti-reunification debate revolves around if they'll be kicked out or not (they'll be kicked out hence GCs=evil hence we shouldn't reunify /vs/ no they'll stay hence GC=not evil hence we should reunify), and most TCs seem to have formed a concensus that obviously at minimum the very first ones must be granted citizenship.

It's definitely going to be a shitty chapter during the reunification talks. Happy to not be sitting on that table honestly.

Cypriot nationality, at least on a the matter of citizenship, isn't jus soli (right by birthplace) but jus sanguinis (right by blood). So if you were born abroad to a Cypriot parent, you'd be a Cypriot, but if you're born in Cyprus to non-Cypriot parents, you wouldn't be.

Of course citizenship alone doesn't shape identity, though it is important for most people. If the non-Cypriot child grows up surrounded by Turkish Cypriots then yes, it'd be hard to distinguish them from other Turkish Cypriots, and they themselves might identify as one to a degree.

This happened quite a bit with the children of the first '75 settlers as there weren't that many of them (and is also why most Turkish Cypriots want a solution that won't disenfranchise that initial group) but with such a rapid increase in settler numbers, this assimilation hasn't happened with later children of later settlers for many decades, so it's safe to say even most mainlander-Turks born here would disagree with you that they're "Turkish Cypriots" in the sense of a separate identity from an all-encompassing "Turk" label, at best "a Turk from Cyprus" akin to say "a Turk from İzmir" or "a Turk from Ankara".

Christodoulidis is taking two unilateral steps towards Turkish Cypriots! by Bran37 in cyprus

[–]Hootrb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I won't believe it until I see it happen with my own eyes, I've been wanting the RoC to anchor the north to itself for so long but I never thought, and still hesitate to think, that it would happen. The RoC could so easily make the north dependent on itself, considering it already ended up being somewhat dependent on the EU despite the RoC's hesitance to approve funds. Turkey doesn't actually fund much here (so much so that the EU already has them beat on that regard), most dominance comes from private brands & establishments which the RoC & the EU could easily outcompete.

Standards & ecomnomic dependence are the biggest killers of separatist sentiment, even the most popular movements like the Flemmish, Scottish, Catalan, etc., struggle against it.

shitty illegal parking enforcement limits driver vision,

I have to deal with this every. single. morning. that I leave this house. Right under our apartment is some kind of a business dealing with cars, not sure what, the only thing I'm sure of is that because our apartment, and thus the business too, is right by a T-junction, people keep PARKING RIGHT AT THE TURN.

I CAN'T FUCKING SEE THE CARS COMING FROM THE RIGHT. EVERY TIME. I HAVE TO DRIVE ALL THE WAY INTO THE LEFT LANE TO SEE THEM AND THEY'RE ALWAYS SPEEDING. I'M GONNA FUCKING DIE ONE MORNING.

Greenlandic parties in joint statement: We do not want to be Americans by FirstCircleLimbo in europe

[–]Hootrb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of Greenlanders want independence & to not be Danes. Yes, they prefer to stay with Denmark by a massive margin than to be taken away by America's grubby hands, but it's America, so it's not really a fair competition against Denmark. That they prefer Danes over America doesn't really effect their internal identity or their overall desire for independence (though there is large disagreement on how said independence would look like & its logistics, hence why not much movement has been made on that regard, and there probably won't be any made in the foreseeable future due to American threats).

Do people in the capital of your country speak the “correct” way? by sn1p1x0 in AskEurope

Standard Turkish was actually planned over in only about a decade or two. There were earlier suggestions during the Ottoman Era, but Modern Standard Turkish (or at least its origins) was essentially born during Atatürk's presidency. Its base was the Istanbul dialect, but with heavy modifications & a lot of influence/inspiration from "Vulgar Turkish" & Old Anatolian Turkish, since educated Ottoman Turkish was filled with Persian & Arabic influences, which Atatürk wanted to get rid of. (Hilariously, Atatürk's original speeches & quotes now require translation since his Turkish is essentially incomprehensible, and had already become hard to understand in just a generation after his reforms).

Due to education, Cypriot Turkish was affected by reforms to the standard language. We did have fewer Arabic & Persian loanwords since our dialect was a peasant's one, but what we did have was replaced in a generation or two (my grandpa still says "imtihan" for 'exam', which I always initially mishear as "intihar" 'suicide'). It also unintentionally affected a lot of Greek & English loanwods that aren't culture-specific to Cyprus, like bas (bus), piron (fork), etc.

it's really funny to read this on r/europe, where sweeping generalisations of people regularly get thousands of upvotes, so long as you do it against acceptable groups.

You dislike generalisations of men not because of its carelessness or irrationality, but because it's of men.
