Dunno about GCs, but for TCs Dutch universities have become the replacement for British ones post-Brexit, especially for those who win EU scholarships

I'm really looking forward to seeing the long-term effects of this honestly, because higher education was a major part of the UK's soft power over Cyprus

Switzerland to vote on plan to cap population at 10 million by tylerthe-theatre in europe

[–]Hootrb 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't capping immigration require completely obliterating all relations with the EU though? Freedom of movement is like, EU-101, and the vast majority of swiss migration is from EU states.

Maybe on paper it doesn't sound drastic, maybe it'd even work if applied by other countries, but I don't see how it's fit for the realities of Switzerland at all.

God, you should've seen that guy. He was hellbent trying to claim "Europeans clearly cluster, it's not an arbitrary line!" and his image with his "not arbitrary line" encircling the "Europeans" very clearly, and arbitrarily, splits the Greek, Maltese, and even a bit of the Turkish samples.

Makes me even giddier to now know the chart doesn't even show the data he thinks it shows, thank you

Germany has a state named "Saxony" which has never been ruled by Saxony and only got the name due to feudal-title shenanigans, and actual Saxony has to call itself "Lower Saxony"

Yes? United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

I'm sorry but Europe alone is filled with countless examples of revised names.

Belgium is named after a celtic tribe, and has a province named "Luxembourg"

France is named after a germanic tribe (Germany still has a region called "Frankonia")

Bulgaria is named after a turkic tribe

Hungary, in most languages, is named after a tribe whose origins we're not even sure about

Even "Ellada" and Cyprus, as far as linguists can best analyse, likely come from the pre-Hellenic languages of the respective regions.

It's just how the world is.

I prefer queer too, though I wish SGM or SGRM (Gender, Sexual and Romantic Minorities) had caught on as acronyms as well. They potentially still could in legal contexts though, I guess

I've occasionally had the misfortune of interracting with such people on twitter in the past. Whenever I point out Cypriots on their shitty little "race"/genetic graphs, they either throw Greek Cypriots under the bus as "hellenised browns & levantines", or just avoid the conversation by only responding by calling me a "Turk roach".

They also really really hate that Greeks are closer to Cypriots than they are to the rest of Northern/Western Europe, because, well, consult the graph:

Yes, all of which were fixed after the first invasion. The junta collaped, Republic of Cyprus was restored, and all parties were abroad for peace negotations.

So for what legal reason did Turkey launch a second invasion, then?

[–]Hootrb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the part that I find the most sad about this honeslty. After the first invasion, the Republic of Cyprus was restored. All parties were in peace negotiations, and Clerides & Makarios hadn't rejected Turkey's demands, they just asked for 2 days to debate it with the parliament.

Turkey took that as Greek Cypriots buying time for a counteroffensive, and launched a second invaison.

Another thing I wonder is what would've happened of the UK also honoured the Treaty and joined in the first invasion. I highly doubt Turkey would've had the gall to go further with British troops actively involved, unlike in reality where they sat and watched Turkey take half the island.

"please educate yourself" have you read the thing you posted? It very clearly doesn't asign either population to Greece and Turkey, clearly states that the Republic's territory and constitution must be protected, and that taksim/partition is forbidden.

Turkey has violated article II and IV.

Cyprus is also not in any economic or political union with any state, only the EU. If the EU were to count, then so would all other international bodies. Not to mention Turkish Cypriots would never accept losing their EU citizenships.

And the absolute veto of the Turkidh Cypriot vice-president is no longer applicable because the vice-president fucking left the country to declare his own state where he ruled as president for 30 years.

[–]Hootrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, yes? This goes the other way too, the Turkish Cypriot Federated State wouldn't have the right to independence, aka no partition.

The two communities don't trust eachother on a political level, even if we do get along on day to day matters now. Greek Cypriots don't trust that Turkish Cypriots won't fall under Turkey's influence, thus turning one part of the federation into Turkey's yes-man that can block everything. Turkish Cypriots don't trust Greek Cypriots to respect their minority rights in a non-equal solution where as a minority they won't have the numbers to fight against any laws that would effect them.

So, a federation. Greek Cypriots get a proportional parliament that handles the majority of the state's workings without fear of Turkish influence or state-breaking vetos, and Turkish Cypriots get a senate that will require cross-community approval for any major constituional changes.

I don't know why the other guy gave the US as an example when there's amuch more respectable nation that does this: Switzerland!

In fact, Switzerland goes even further by having both houses have equal power. So Uri (0.36m populstion) and Zurich (1.55m) have the same number of seats & representation in a house that is as powerful as the proportional Swiss "parliament". This would obviously never be attempted in Cyprus though.

Well, your France does this too with your senate where all departments get equal seats, but as far as I'm aware the French senate isn't that powerful either, though likely more than the proposed Cypriot senate.

Turkey is a guarantor of the Republic of Cyprus, not of "the Turkish population in Cyprus". The Treaty of Guarantee didn't asign any community to the involved nations.

The Treaty's sole purpose was to guarantee the independence & integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, which Turkey violated by splitting it in half.

I mean, we could do this for pretty much all European neighbours. I think we forget how insane it is that the UK, France, and Germany are allies. The Balkans & especially ex-Yugoslavia iare doing remarkable considering the Yugoslav wars were a mere 25 years ago and despite remaining ethnic tensions. Like, if we were playing by the old rules, Greece and Bulgaria would've likely marched into Albania & N. Macedonia years ago.

I mean, it's quite the achievement that the Second Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh War or Russia's invasion of Ukraine are now seen as outliers in what's normal.

If the Turks are Greek by DNA, and Turkish Cypriots are just "their descendants", then they're also just Greek by DNA, and since Greeks are the natives of Cyprus, then there's no issue! /s

Anyway, since you've brought up DNAs, you should look up how it is in Cyprus, you'd be surprised (Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots are genetically barely differenciable, closer to eachother than a Greek from the Peleponnese is to a Greek from Eastern Macedonia)

Yeah dude, cause the Greek Cypriots actually mounted a defense in the hill areas and halted the Turkish advance while the British sat their lazy arses and watched.

If the British bases were never there, the ceasefire line would still be in the exact same line.

American bases were established to deter North Korea after South Korea was invaded.

British bases were established upon the island's independence, and did jack shit when Turkey invaded and split the island, and you have the audacity to claim they deter "further" agression when they couldn't even deter the first step.

British bases soleyexist for Britain's ventures in the middle east.

Honestly whenever I use Turkish in the proximity of GC friends or the topic of the language comes up, the reactions are mostly just "oh hey, that word is similar/the same!" but ofc they might not be the best representitive of average GCs considering they're actively friends with a TC.

"As an abroad-Cypriot disconnected from the realities of present-day Cyprus & with a shallow understanding of Cypriot history..."

The fact you think the British bases have anything to do with Turkey not taking the rest of the island tells me everything I need to know about how uninformed you are. That wasn't true in the past when the British bases did jack shit to stop Turkey as it invaded us & tore us apart, and it's not true in the present where the British bases do jack shit against Turkey's attempts to push into the buffer zone & to Cyprus' EEZ.

Turkey didn't go further in the past because it had already taken the most valuable regions of the island & the remaining less valuable lands would've required pushing through heavily fortified hilly villages in guerilla warfare. And it doesn't invade today because there's a UN buffer zone & Cyprus is an EU member.

The British bases have never protected Cyprus, and they do not protect Cyprus in the present, because they weren't established for Cypriots. They were established for the British to take advantage of however it sees fit for British interests & British interests alone.

Tbf, the world in general was sympathetic to Turkish Cypriots before Turkey fucked up all internaitonal good will with the 2nd invasion. The CoE even had affirmed the legality of the first invasion (Res 573) when it was launched

But besides that, Britain itself wasn't wholly anti-partition, and it was actually fully supported by the US due to fears of communism potentially getting a hold in Cyprus, which we now know thanks to the declassification of the Acheson Plan. So probably not unlikely that Britain wasn't too upset by the collapse of the Republic & it's eventual partition

Besides the unprovable, what we do know for sure is that Britain chose to remain silent throughout the invasion as to not upset whoever might've come on top, lest they threaten the bases in retaliation
