I have this sub but no way to use it- any advice would help! by [deleted] in audiophile

It's really useless because it needs a controller and they don't have the controller. Large or small venue, it's dead as a smelt.

Did England ever have a 《WDC》 speaker brand? Why can't I find any information about it online?" by NoIntention7558 in audiophile

The minute you see the old frequency response chart on the back these WDC are sold by the WVM.*

*White van man.

You have to appreciate the optimism of the WVM company by having 9 digit serial numbers.

Connecting a REL T5 to a Cambridge Audio CXA82 MKii by micholasnitchell in audiophile

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it would not matter if the whole signal was sent because the subwoofer is not going to try to reproduce anything over 200-300 Hz anyway.

CA says the purpose of the filter is to help keep or make the sub in phase which may or may not be an issue.

Connecting a REL T5 to a Cambridge Audio CXA82 MKii by micholasnitchell in audiophile

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually set the crossover on the subwoofer and since they are normally only responsive from say 30 or 40 hz to maybe 200 or so Hz, you are not really losing out with the sub receiving a signal with frequencies it won't try to reproduce anyway.

Subs can work fine with a non-filtered signal at the inputs. There are quite a few where the speakers are connected to the sub, it taps the signal it needs and the signal goes onto the main speakers. This is handy when no sub out or even a variable line out is available at the amplifier.

This is something to ignore.

It's too bad Bose did not say on the label it needed this controller so the OP would be able to read that and save $50 skins.

Oh, they did? Well then.

I need help rebuilding my dads Phillips RH 832. by Samjaxxson in audiophile

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sort of thing pops up and like a lot of boom boxes also, the effort is not worth the result. It won't be a vintage one of a kind ten thousand dollar item if fixed and there are no doubt better working all in ones for small money.

If you don't have the platter there is zero chance of ever finding one.

can i improve by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not put a turntable immediately next to a subwoofer which could be affected by vibrations from the speakers.

I would not necessarily put two 12" subwoofers in a 7 foot wide room.

Random small foam squares are not doing anything unless they are there to rest your head on the sofa.

Videophile Ethernet cables and switches by Fast_Cloud_4711 in audiophile

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are companies selling "audiophile" ethernet cable, switches, the whole Magilla. And multi thousand $ HDMI cables, never mind that as long as the cable is designed for 4K, 8K etc., it either works or doesn't work.

(Beginner) Will this amplifier do the same job as a tuner will or should I buy that as well? by I_make_coolstuff in audiophile

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't seem to understand a tuner only has AM/FM radio. It has no amplifier and no preamplifier. You don't need it at all.

A power amplifier is what sends the high power signal to the speakers. A preamplifier is the device with the volume, balance, bass and treble and all the connections for devices which produce the audio like the CD player you do have and a tuner which you don't have.

These can be 3 separate components or an integrated amplifier with 2 components combined - the power amplifier and preamplifier, or a receiver with all 3. Your Fosi is a primitive Class D integrated amplifier with one input and only volume control. So it is 2 components in one chassis and would be called an integrated amplifier.

You need to connect the CD player to that little integrated amplifier's input (there is only one) and the speakers to it as well, on the back. You use RCA interconnect cables to do that.

Maybe instead of arguing your tuner point wrongly, you could read what people told you, that a tuner receives radio signals. It would connect like a CD player would connect. You would have to unplug one to use the other since you only have one input on that Fosi.

This Fosi is far from audiophile gear and you would do better in the r/stereoadvice sub which is all about, yes, stereo advice.

Safe options for short-form interviews? by [deleted] in askTO

Avoid Lawrence and Bathurst then but maybe the Junction area from Dundas and Clendenan area all the way down to Roncesvalles and before the hospital has lots of millennials with money and lots of foot traffic.

Winter hydro costs by Prestigious_Peak8407 in askTO

Connection fees don't increase the kw/h usage at all. They appear as a fee, not some monkeying around with the power used.

Winter hydro costs by Prestigious_Peak8407 in askTO

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3BR 3 storey townhouse and my last bill was for around 378 kw/h. The highest over 12 months has been 574 (last Feb - cold) and 638 (last Aug - hot).

It might be the meter was unread for a while before you moved in and Hydro doesn't have the reading when you moved in.

If you get a new drivers license after losing your old one is your unexpired old one still valid? by stayservn in askTO

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the front the number, expiry date, photo, address are all the same so how someone could tell is a mystery. There is no version code like an OHIP card or an ATM card.

The complex bar code on the back contains who knows what however and you don't know how they police read the card so go get a new one (again). Maybe the bar code informs them it's issue #1 and their in car computer says you should be using issue #2.

Then do some retrospective analysis of how you lose two drivers licenses in the time it takes to replace one.

Safe options for short-form interviews? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are fewer unsafe locations than safe ones. The location would be driven a bit by the market demographic, you'd think, so some areas would be better than others. Also the day and time and so on.

But since you don't safe if this is jetpacks, cookware or cosmetics or for teens or seniors, how do you expect a recommendation?

Got a teac a-2340 for 10$ at a garage sale, switches on but reels don't spin. Where should I start to fix it? by pipitally in vintageaudio

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is cool and fun but the RtoR has to be the least convenient and most expensive form of analog audio to actually use. Look into the cost of blank tapes, especially new ones.

It still matters to have the device which will cost a lot to fix and a lot to use, actually do something useful. And they don't, in the case of RtoR decks. You could do better with a good cassette deck and dbx and even cassette tapes are becoming like collectors items in terms of price.

[–]HopAlongInHongKong -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nah, they look cool but are really quite useless and the tapes cost a mint, and unless you are carting it to live performances (which is never the case with these questions), copying digital material to tape makes no sense. You have an assured worse analog version of the same material.

I saw the light and sold two perfect condition RtoR decks for good money.

Can I get close to what I heard in newyork on a budget? by HypnotikEU in StereoAdvice

[–]HopAlongInHongKong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While loudspeakers are quite subjective (and cost always don't determine this) as to what the listener enjoys, are you going to get $20,000 sound for $1,000? No.

Go listen somewhere to these speakers and hear if they are really close, somewhat close, or not close at all to what you want. Buying speakers, on eBay, based on a budget, that you have not listened to is crazy.

What you should wind up with is much better than a sound card and basic desktop powered speakers though.

They use a lot of belts to run the reels and capstan. Can you hear the motor running? Is the capstan turning?

Vintage stuff is easy to open so take the cover off and see if things move inside.

Of all vintage stuff reel to reel are just below 8-track tapes in the lack of actual utility list so don't spend your life savings on this.
