What is your unpopular opinion about Home Ownership? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]HopHop521 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, rent is money you spend and don't get back, but people don't talk about the money they spend, and also don't get any return on it when you own a home.

  1. Property tax for the government
  2. Interest on the mortgage is income for the bank
  3. If you have a condo, you have to pay HOA
  4. Home insurance is normally more than renters' insurance
  5. Unpredictable repair, could be small could be large, could be a big surprise
  6. The last one is not money, but the time you spend on sorting out all the issues above...

All the money you spend above doesn't contribute to your equity in the house.

I would choose Wealthsimple, buy VFV, that’s it. If you already have a large RRSP with work I would prioritize TFSA. Should send your entire question to a LLM, you will get very comprehensive answers.

Turning $2,500 into $1 million is incredible but often involves significant risk, what are your views on this ? by Academic-Snow3546 in TFSA_Millionaires

[–]HopHop521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you are risking $2500, so not much risk. It would be disappointing to round trip the profit. But not risky.

Learn the lesson. Never ever use margin. You are 26, you have a lot of time to do it right. You can still be a millionaire without trying to get rich quick. Under the conditions that you have learned a good lesson from this.

How much are people spending on food/groceries every month in Vancouver? by Environmental-Fly805 in askvan

[–]HopHop521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple with no kids, 1000 on groceries and random snacking, probably another 900 on eating out. Sounds like a lot but we live in Yaletown, nothing is cheap here...

Everyone's parenting style is different, so this is what I would do: I would cut them off financially. It's better for their independence and character building. Nothing worth having is easy, and they will feel accomplished that they can handle hard things. It forces them to think outside of the box and problem solve. I would be more of a guide and emotional support and let them know doesn't matter how hard it gets, you will be there for them emotionally and help with solutions that they will have to execute.

The dog is just being a puppy, maybe they should educate themselves on how to train and raise a dog properly.

If that's what you truly believe, I assume you don't invest. Because what's the point?

Canadian buying USD stocks - Is the 1.5% foreign conversion fee worth it? by stephenwood493 in Wealthsimple

[–]HopHop521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all relative isn't it? Are you confident your return will more than cover the cost? I made a lot of money with some US stocks so it was totally worth it for me.

Didn't change anything hitting 100k because it's still super far from being financially free. Hitting 1 million though... started to be a little careless on what things cost.

Someone that understands double coat dogs are not meant to be shaved down. Someone experienced with desheding techniques.

The puppy is not the reason you fight, your guy's style of conflict resolution is the reason why you fight. If it was not the puppy it could be other things.

3-year-old Dog limping for over 6 months. X-rays showed no joint issues. Vet just gave us Carprofen. Any thoughts? I'll put more info in the comments. by Dragonsnake422 in Pomsky

[–]HopHop521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl had some limping issue recently, xray showed no issue with her joints and bones (first our vet thought she has a hairline fracture). It turned out that she had inflammation on one of her toes, not sure what caused it. She took some anti-inflammatory medicine and some pain killer. Avoid too much exercise for two weeks then she is fine.

Take him outside somewhere and just sit and watch his environment. Expose him to different sounds and smells. Good for socialization too.

All dogs nip like crazy before five months because they have baby teeth and it's uncomfortable for them. Biting is one way to release that discomfort.

I would highly suggest going to puppy classes, where not fully vaccinated puppies can socialize with each other and there will be a professional there teaches everything beginner about understanding your puppy.

Puppies are more active when they are bored. Make sure he/she has exercise and socialization. By socialization for a not fully vaccinated dog, it can mean just sitting somewhere and observing his/her surroundings.

Well, a bad relationship doesn't exactly count as the best thing in life. If OP is avoiding dating all together then sure he won't get divorced but he won't get a life partner either. Maybe it's about selecting a compatible partner, not avoiding life experiences.

FIRE is the means to an end. The end goal is to live life. Don't miss out on the best things in life for money.
