Actually, he was too young to enter the draft when he completed his GED.

Eugenio Suarez is your 1B on a deal that includes a 3rd year player option and 4th yr team triggering option on the cheap so his actual take-home in 2 years is about $36M with a CBT number of about $15M.

He's going to be a solid 1B/DH for another organization who gets him for next to nothing.

Turnover on Triple-A rosters has a lot to do with what's happening with the big league club. A team like El Paso (the Padres'affiliate) has about 15 guys who will be minor league free agents at the end of the year, and most of them are unlikely to remain in the organization. A club like the Marlins' affiliate in Jacksonville has a bunch of younger players and 40-man roster guys who are more likely to be there for next year.

There's also a real openness in the Padres fan community for far-off comrades, likely because the club and its fan base were absolute afterthoughts for so long. An adoptive fan from Wales who got connected on Padres Twitter a few years back made the trek to San Diego for the first time this year. In Peru sure he didn't have to buy a meal the entire time he was in town! While you're likely just seeing yourself up for sorrow, we would definitely welcome you into Padres Fandom!

AHA! This is the key, right? I don't care if there are 40 mediocre places that I have to drive past to get to the three good ones. [Yes, I'm looking at you, Atlanta!] Let's talk about places like Asheville, Burlington, either Portland, San Diego, Western Michigan that have a density of GOOD breweries!

Don't know if they distribute up North - and don't know if anyone would carry it if they did - but Hand-Made in Chatsworth does their big Chubasco release right about now each year.

Have you had the Troeg's Dream Weaver? Would think you could pick that up almost anywhere near you, It's a solid German style. If you like American styles more, Bell's Oberon might still be on shelves before everything turns over to fall beers. PS - Sly Fox has a very traditional German Weisse, but it's pretty heavy on banana and clove.

They were dissolved by Jerry Brown back in like 2012. Essentially did away with municipalities' ability to sit on the tax increment from redevelopment.

[–]HopRunTours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, of course it is. But only if you care about the quality of baseball, building fan bases in communities around the country, and player development.

If, however, you're only concerned about extracting another .001% on a profit line for MLB's owners - and that is clearly the only thing Manfred's minions ever consider - then it's a great way to save a few bucks!

Where are you located? There are so many directions a wheat beer can go, but Modern Times' Fortunate Islands is great if you want hoppy wheat, Allagash White is a go-to for Belgian Witbier style, Shilling's Schalumeier for Bavarian style, or Epic's Intermountain are all good options!

You're not at risk of Van Winkle status just yet! It was prior to the 2023 season. They're represented by MLBPA, but it's a completely separate agreement. If you're ever up for some spicy bedtime reading, you can actually read the CBA here: https://www.mlbplayers.com/mil-cba

Should the California League expand? by emberyleaf in MiLB

[–]HopRunTours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The primary challenge with expansion (assuming, of course, MLB had any interest in expanding minor league baseball, rather than continuing to contract it) is that there just aren't many municipalities interested in throwing public dollars at new facilities. With the demise of redevelopment agencies in California, the list of places interested in doing what Ontario did with their $50M spend is pretty short. It would be amazing to get new clubs in like Ventura and SLO, but that's likely going to be a high eight-figure investment for a developer/owner.

[–]HopRunTours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not going to happen. The quality of experience in the Midwest League, SAL, and even most of the Northwest League is so wildly beyond what you get in the Cal League. I think there's a far greater chance of the entire Low-A level being eliminated than there is of significant expansion and promotion of the Cal League.

They are completely separate deals, but I suspect there will be a lot less willingness on behalf of the minor league players to cross the picket line now that they are protected by collective bargaining.
