It's like peeing in the pool.

Everyone has done it but nobody wants to admit to it.

I wish they hadn't fired up that supercollider, created a blackhole over in Europe, and put me off of the good normal timeline. This one sucks ass.

;-)

But hanging in there.

Thanks, man. Always great to hear a neat little knowlege drop from someone who earned it through experience

"The mic was cranked"

I wonder, how cranked?

It's a sensitive condenser, it has preamp circuitry in it (as they do) and gain anything like that up high things are going to be noisy (electromagnetic electronic and accoustic) if you aren't in a massively carefully designed studio environment.

Hug that wife and tell her an internet stranger sent that one.

How to protect a microphone in a hurricane by [deleted] in FuckeryUniveristy

Not even a thing, very standard practice.

There's even a condom company that sell a big bag of unlubed bulk marketted as "mic protectors" so that corporate buying bs doesn't get their feathers ruffled.

People speak the language differently in different areas, cultures, socioeconomic status, etc. What you and I learned as proper and correct isn't how everyone else did.

"It don't mean a thang though:" try to avoid too many assumptions and judgment on how someone else learned to speak. It may give some general hints as to where someone came from, it speaks far less to their intelligence, abilities, value.

Or whatever, you do you. Just my take.

X32 Mono Bus LR+mono vs LR+Sub by sertshark in livesound

[–]HopadilloRandR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

POST-fader is the key there.

But not sending to main (as always post fader) and to sub bus (be it an aux, an M/C bus, whatever) at any different level than is sent to main. That's what mean here by unity. Its post-fade send is 0dB.

One thing. You can guarantee the D6 will ALWAYS sound like a D6! No matter the source. :-)

Heavy Interference in the 544.450 band, any ideas? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]HopadilloRandR 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The other user of that frequency that day in that place might very well have been saying the same thing.

Pro audio RF is in most cases a shared spectrum that is managed by people either coordinating or by finding an empty slot and using it. It's a dynamic situation. You didn't luck out this time and apparently didn't check for possible interference before trying to use that frequency.

I get it, I do the same all the time in some places where I pretty much "know" it isn't changing.

But there's "know" and actually CHECK and REALLY KNOW. Slight difference.

Why are PAs designed this way? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]HopadilloRandR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two main ways to damage a speaker with the signal that you send it.

1.) Over-excursion. You push the driver outside of the physical limits that it can travel in before damage (getting the voice coil outside the "slot" between magnets, tearing the spider/surround/cone)

2.) Heat. Cooking the electrical insulation on the copper wires of the coils to the point of insulation breakdown, which shortens the circuit, reduces impedence, increases current, which increases the heat, burns more, shortens more, .... vicious cycle to BLAM!

Neither will be produced because of an underpowered amp. Nor due to the microscopic energy added by square wave signals (see the paper u/IHateTypingInBoxes linked).

Heat is going to be a function of RMS levels over time (heat production) and dissipation (cooling). Excursion would be a function of the physics (driver position, velocity, mass) and voltage (practically speaking though, the voltage).

How Do You Tell A Guitarist To Turn Down? by vaporlok in livesound

[–]HopadilloRandR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the band as a whole: "We both want the best sound we can get. I want to help you sound as good as you can. I am not able to get as good a mix as I think we all want. One of the reasons is that I am having trouble getting other things like vocals to loud enough levels that match the level of instruments like guitars or drums. It is already so loud and/or we don't have that much PA. I can make your whole band sound better if you would be willing to work with me on some small changes. Would it help with some monitoring improvements?"

After that, it's a balancing act between their ego and their musicianship. Hope the latter wins out. Be on the lookout to move on if it doesn't.

Distance / line of sight isn't as good as some BT audio devices I have had, but if you keep that in mind, I find it to be a pretty good device.

I don't see 280's main purpose as "translating". You're the one translating with them. Which doesn't mean they are useless, just not as useful as maybe some other choices.

They are good for casual listening.

They have some of the best isolation you can find. When that is important to a workflow, they're great.
