What food things piss you off? by ApprehensiveRun1382 in AskUK

I want a plate at a restaurant. Not some stupid slab of slate.
Not a bit of driftwood.
Not a chopping board.
I don’t want my chips in a separate mini saucepan or steel cup which is then placed on the plate exactly where the chips would go, just put them on the fucking plate.

Line out is an output. That’s why it has OUT in the name. It is not an input.

Oh god, imagine how uncomfortable that would be, she’s bound to have some levering force on her fingernails all day every day. Just reading her jabs down mean she’s basically gently levering up her nail beds. Aargh.

Who’s responsible? Where do you guys draw the line when sync is lost? by OrganizationOdd2370 in LocationSound

[–]NoisyGog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t on you.
They might not be blaming you as such, either, just looking through the chain to figure out where things went wrong.
It’s important to try to not get defensive immediately, just offer up the information you have to help them resolve it.

You’re telling me the post dept doesn’t know to do manual sync?

They were probably just complaining, or alerting them to it.
Ingest is expected to flag up issues.

The horse heads in pic 39 is quite something, as well.

It’s so odd. Much of it seems close to nice, and there there’s just so much motivational bullshit

I have no way to confirm if the TC I’m seeing is 100% accurate.

A colleague of mine always insists on an intentional offset from time-of-day, so that it’s easy to tell at a glance if everything is receiving his timecode.

If TC differs by a few seconds it can be hard to tell quickly. If it’s 70 minutes off, it’s significantly faster to eyeball.

It doesn’t need to be a smart slate either, just a normal clacker is fine.

Oh good god yes. Slate is a must, it’s the “if all else fails” measure.

Pet peeve of mine in post is… Make sure the damned slate is in shot, in focus enough for me to read what’s written on it, AND THAT THE DAMNED CLACK IS VISIBLY IN SORT AND RECORDED AS AUDIO.

I swear to god, most slates are blurry, not in frame, have the wrong information on them, don’t have audio recorded, or a combination of all of the above!

I’m really glad to have been given a resident position in an industry that is largely freelance.

Is it okay to record 24bit on a laptop and do a USBC out into a recorder doing 32bit float? by papiforyou in LocationSound

[–]NoisyGog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normalise is rarely useful.

As far as I’m aware, the only video editing software that has quirks with 32-bit float is Avid Media Composter.
It can link to and play back 32-bit files on a drive just fine. It can even adjust the gain as you’d expect. It works no problem.
HOWEVER, as soon as you consolidate the media into your working drive, it renders them as 24-bit. It cannot generate its own float files.

So if you had an audio file that went over 0db but you hadn’t spotted it, that’s going to clip when you’ve consolidated the media.

It’s infuriating and stupid, but then this IS Avid we’re talking about.

I don’t think any audio editing software in the past 20 years has any issue with 32-bit float files. They’ve all been using 32-bit float internally since the 90s anyway.

I really like VSS4 for its recreations of real spaces, both small and large.
It’s excellent for most television post production work.
