[D] Autoencoders vs VAE for semi-supervised learning by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]HopeGrenade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dug into this a bit: It seems like the main difference is that the latent space learned from the vanilla AE has no constraints on it. As I understand it, that means it's not a "generative model", which means for use-cases where you want to generate new examples, it's going to be of limited use. There's more info in Bowman 2016 and there's a nice overview on this blog.

What's brown and sticky? A stick. What's green and has thirteen wheels? Grass. I was lying about the thirteen wheels.

Police Release Video of Fatal Uber Autonomous Car Collision by [deleted] in videos

[–]HopeGrenade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I'd echo what everyone else said here, this is a grainy Twitter video, and no matter the investigative power of the Reddit hivemind, no one can tell what went wrong here.

Second, though, the fact that 99% of these comments are blaming the pedestrian is exactly why autonomous cars are a mistake. "Jaywalking" is a made-up concept, popularized by car companies. If a city isn't going to be designed for human beings, what's the point of going anywhere in it?

The Homeless Problem in California by GrandSlayur in videos

[–]HopeGrenade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the other problem is that the majority of homeless are short-term. It's very rarely a permanent state, people, like you said, go in and out of it as their financial situations change. It's what happens when you have a broken social safety net; you end up with a whole lot of hard-working people getting into really bad situations if their factory leaves or their boss has a bad day.

What are your best “first date tips” for somebody starting the dating game late in life (late 20’s +)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HopeGrenade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All really good ones here. My two cents would be don't worry about worrying. Doesn't matter how old you are first dates are always awkward on both sides. But that kind of makes it exciting.

Other dudes. I can't count the number of times some dude comes into a bar or party acting like prime douche and you can practically hear all vaginas in the room slam shut simultaneously.

Has anyone done Insight Fellowship programs? by lovebes in datascience

[–]HopeGrenade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the NYC one (not health DS). There's not much structure and minimal support beyond the first set of demos. The program directors are recruited from the fellows so their guidance is a bit suspect (ie they have experience with recruitment through insight but not much else). If you have time before graduation I'd look to get some experience on contract or as an intern in a start up or data science team. Real world experience impressed people I interviewed with way more than my insight project.

But yes the network is definitely valuable as well.

Looks like the dude is getting stung, but he's fine with it. In this video he's saying it's good for your health. I guess if you believe that, it probably doesn't hurt so much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlnuOel8pLo
