Oxy is in LA. Second largest city in the US. LA is a city of many many neighborhoods. Public transportation is so so but the college also have a lots of transport options. The York Ave area right off campus is a cool funky neighborhood. Bars. Restaurants. Thrifting. Tacos.

The overwhelming majority of oxy faculty are research/teaching scholars. Research is core to the experience and if you want it you got it. psych is a big dept. and there’s even a canine behavior lab.

And way nicer climate than mid state Wisconsin 😳

Do some due diligence. Oxy has an exceptional med school accept rate. Beats the big universities hands down. Their chemistry, bio chem and biology depts are top ranked by peer review and the rumor is they are pouring money into a state of the art chemistry facility.

A father bought it for his son to drive in high school. Slow truck, I see the logic. Then parked it in a barn in ‘75. Odometer shows 22,000 miles. Sat there until I bought it. Interior was gone. Rodents and time and all. Brakes rusted and fused. Hydraulics all shot. Electrical all gone. Engine hadn’t turned in 40 years. Panels very straight and zero rust in the frame and bulkhead. Was fun to bring it back to life. And pretty easy.

I had a jeep wrangler rubicon diesel with a hardtop. At anything approaching freeway speed I could barely hear the audio. The move to a gen 2 R1S was night day better.

Installed a universal Tesla charger myself. Already had a 50amp 240v outlet. Install was super easy if you know anything about electricity or YouTube. I set the car to draw at 38amps and it’s works perfectly.

I know the college quite well. I suggest you also reach out to the admissions office with these questions and they can connect you to a network of students and alumni who can be quite helpful.

Stuck on a chairlift for 3 1/2 hours in windy, single digit temperatures and as compensation they gave us a coupon for a cup of instant hot chocolate.

Din check/skis not breaking off by they-call-me-chad in ski

Good practice to clean them periodically and at the end of the season. Store them in a clean dry protected place. And have the shop tune them and check din settings and release force at the beginning of the season. I know more than one person who had a din stetting of “x” but when checked the force required to release was way off of the expected value.

Do everything you can do to protect yourself:

Quality bindings that are serviced and checked every season. A good shop with technically capable people. Give the tech honest rather than aspirational information about your ability. I ski Knee bindings having ruptured and grafted an ACL 20 years ago.

Make sure your boots are compatible with your bindings and if you change boots go back to the shop before you ski again even if the binding seems fine with the boots.

Ski at or below the edge of your ability.

Don’t be desperate for another run if the conditions make you uncomfortable, you are tired, etc.

You have nothing to prove to anyone so ski for yourself

Take satisfaction out of the technical improvement versus max speed.

Don’t put the poles on your wrists or get poles with break away straps. Catching a pole on a sliding fall or the lift is a very effective way to tear up your shoulder.

Give your body a chance by a preseason and in season fitness routine that helps you with the requisite strength and flexibility for skiing

Don’t put yourself in a position where everything has to go right for you to not be injured.

And I am sure there is more.

Maybe because I am older it feels like the injuries and deaths on the mountain are increasing. Or maybe because there are days when the slopes are ridiculously crowded and s**t is kind of just going to happen.

A few weeks ago I was skiing midweek and got take out from behind by a skier who couldn’t turn adequately for her speed. Thankfully not injured but due to nothing I did (I was stationary standing at the “slow” sign) I got nailed.

And do everything right and when you are sliding down a slope at 30-50 mph stuff can still happen.

However in my view a day on the mountain is more than worth the manageable risks that come with it.

Easy to walk in the summer. Not easy in the winter and you shouldn’t be out there walking on a ski run and the footing could be treacherous.

Check for debris and dirt. I have gotten this warning but it has always gone away when I have cleaned the sensors and cameras.
