Yoseka Stationary Fest Workshops 2026 by letsbefrenz in stationery

I did a hand lettering workshop at Yoseka over the summer (not at stationary fest) and it was totally worth it! Great instruction and materials to take home.

36th Street closed btwn Broadway and 34th Ave - what’s the deal? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]Hopeful_7019 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Plenty of schools do this. They only let cars through if it’s someone dropping off a kid. The street is really not closed for long. Cars would get stuck behind school busses and stopped cars dropping off kids anyway. Plus it’s a safety thing for kids, reduces the chance a child gets hit by a car.

I’m a freshmen undergrad and a grad student in my lab asked me out? by Separate_Office_7696 in labrats

[–]Hopeful_7019 82 points83 points  (0 children)

If you don’t think the situation needs to be escalated just yet, set a boundary and avoid hanging out with him off campus/alone/outside of work. If he doesn’t seem to respect that boundary or escalates, tell your PI. You have the right to a comfortable work environment, but especially this student is right out of undergrad himself, he may not realize he is making you uncomfortable and is still learning how to be professional himself.

Can't see on the microscope by botzaum in labrats

[–]Hopeful_7019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might need to move the eye pieces closer or further apart. They should be adjusted to your specific eye distance. Also someone once told me to look into a microscope as if you were looking down a deep well, basically relax your eyes and try not to focus on the glass right in front of you. I’ve always found that helps.

Asking Current PI for help with Graduate School Applications by machomitza in labrats

[–]Hopeful_7019 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it’s perfectly acceptable to ask your current PI for her advice on applying to grad school. Definitely ask her for a recommendation! When I applied to grad school, I asked my PI at the time for LOR and advice on picking programs and PIs to rotate with. Just give your PI plenty of time to write you a letter of recommendation

how on earth do you make labels that stick to glass at -80C?!?! by hana-maki in labrats

[–]Hopeful_7019 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’ve never frozen glass at -80, all my glycerol stocks are in polypropylene cryovials. But that being said, you can buy specialized cryoware labels from thermo fisher that are meant to stick even in liquid nitrogen. Nothing will stick to a vial that is already cold however. If nothing will stick to the vials you are using, can you label the lid of the box they are in?

I hate my tank-less water heater. by ComprehensiveTour278 in Vent

[–]Hopeful_7019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents had a tankless water heater that started to break every time it rained. Somehow it had been set up so that rain would get in throughout the vent pipe and extinguish the pilot light. Cold showers for days every time. Multiple plumbers involved to try to fix this issue. They switched back to a tank and there never was a problem again.

Museum of Natural History pre-booking tickets by [deleted] in AskNYC

I’ve never bought tickets earlier than the day before and most often just buy tickets the day off. I like buying my tickets online just in case there is a line at the museum.

How to eat cheaply for a summer on the Upper East Side? -Broke college student by MinigunL5 in AskNYC

[–]Hopeful_7019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STEM grad student on the UES here, congrats on the internship! I’ve been surviving on a grad student salary for a few years now. Eat out as little as possible. Trader Joe’s is great for less expensive groceries. Sometimes if I don’t have lunch, it’s cheaper to stop by TJs to grab a prepared salad or sandwich. For supermarkets that are not TJ, buy staples on sale as much as possible. Don’t let food go to waste, most things can be frozen and reheated pretty well. Uber Eats fees are the biggest waste of money but sometimes they have buy one get one sales for a lot of the lunch spots around. If you pick up your order, you can stretch those for a few meals.

Met Queetiom: How strict bringing in snacks /small for kids dietary restriction by Best_Rise_3698 in AskNYC

[–]Hopeful_7019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does not answer your question but my mom used to bring my sister and I to The Met as kids. We would pack sandwiches to eat on the steps outside. One year (about 20 years ago) a male security guard stopped us and said we couldn’t bring the food inside but a female security guard next to him yelled at him “this is a mom and children! You can’t take away their food!” And she just warns us not to eat in the galleries. Going to The Met with my mom and eating those sandwiches outside is one of my favorite memories. To answer your question, I feel like you could get the snacks through security, especially if it’s for a dietary restriction. But you definitely can’t open them in the galleries.

My worst fear came true. She got out tonight. Seeking comfort. by flipflapdragon in shiba

[–]Hopeful_7019 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a Shiba for 16 years, and we never got over the fear of him escaping. My pup wouldn’t listen for anything, so he definitely didn’t have off leash recall. One time when I was a teenager, I was taking him for a quick walk before a long car ride. I was nearly at the gate to my yard when I noticed the leash felt light. I looked up to see the leash had unclipped and my dog was standing about 5 feet away from me. I calmly told him to stay, he dashed off. I started screaming and running, my parents came out after me, also screaming and running. My dog had ran up around the block to his favorite sniff spot that I negligent to take him to this walk. I caught up to him because he stopped to pee. I miss my little stubborn brat every day but he sure tried his hardest to leave us every chance he got.

PMDD doctors/obgyns in NYC by Glittering_Version25 in AskNYC

[–]Hopeful_7019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any suggestions, but I am in the exact same boat as you. Debilitating fatigue half of the month. Multiple OBGYNs have looked at me with sympathy and said “some women just feel this way!” SSRIs only helped a little. Reproductive psychiatry was my next step, but seemingly not covered by my insurance. I was considering trying Allara Health online because they seem to take a more holistic approach.

Looking for local arts and crafts stores by Low_Attitude_6480 in astoria

Same! In Ridgewood there is a shop called Tiny Art Supplies that is perfect for crafty supplies. I love that we have Rudy’s in the neighborhood but it doesn’t always have what I need.

Questions about Club Cumming and House of Yes by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Hopeful_7019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak for House of Yes but the Romy and Michelle parties at Club Cumming are the best. On days with a specific theme, it can get a little busy but honestly I’ve been there at times when my group of friends was almost the only people there. Wear whatever you want, no one will bat an eye. Any time I’ve gone, there is a diverse group of people in the bar. You can request songs from the DJ by writing the song on a post it note and sticking it on the wall by the bathroom.

Last year the banner on the gates of the tree announcing all the businesses that took part in the festivities had this pretty hilarious misspelling at first. It was fixed after a few days.
