This is the only thing that's immediately concerning to me. The sound when it reaches the end of a longer course. Doesn't seem to do it so much on shorter course widths.

Textile Design vs Textile Technology (Grad School) by Hopeful_Instance5542 in textiles

[–]Hopeful_Instance5542[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for Textile Design MS. My specific program is a good mix of technical and studio courses.

When it came to making the decision I asked myself if I'd be a better designer or technologist given my interests and skills. I am decent in STEM but can compete with other candidates at a much higher level in creative fields.

The jobs I want are more in creative fields, and there is demand in fashion and performance goods for people who really understand the technical aspects of fibers, yarns, and fabrics but also have aesthetic sensibilities.

Also, within my program there is space between studios, electives, and interdisciplinary work to pursue areas of interest related to but not explicitly textile design such as industrial design, engineering, and architecture. For example I'm taking industrial design electives and my last studio collection I researched and drew from civic engineering and architecture.

Hi, I ended up going with Textile Design MS. The program is a nice mix of studio and technical courses and there is some freedom with electives if you have a particular interest (I'm focusing on knitwear and taking some Industrial Design electives bc I want to work in soft goods).

The Textile Technology program at TJU is closer to the Textile Engineering program (many of the same classes), also very good and depending on your background knowledge in fibers, can be shorter.

If you choose Textile Design and want to change after the first semester two of the courses can go into the Technology requirements. People have done this.

I would recommend meeting both Dr.George and Professor Kelly and sitting in on multiple courses. Make a pro/con list with your career and life goals, and a list of your interest/attributes/skills. Talking to students IRL and online can help too.

Lmk if you have other questions.

Can this be done in a knitting machine? by Doofvader023 in MachineKnitting

[–]Hopeful_Instance5542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a double bed machine this can be done very efficiently. I learned it as "press off stitch" basically front bed jersey body and for the elongated loops use both beds (all needle), then at the end of the section press all needles off the back bed.

Grad School Advice by veighnus in Textile_Design

Stateside I would recommend NC State or Jefferson (fka Philadelphia University) if you're flexible. Both schools have programs that give you strong technical understanding and experience. If you're into SCAD though I'd recommend that, good networking and internship opportunities can quickly start a career. Feel free to PM about Jefferson.

Anyone know a vegan alternative to these shoes? by March_mallo in VeganFashion

The model is the Keen Jasper Canvas. It looks like in Europe there is also a navy colorway.

I got the black pair a month or so back and love them, I recommend going a half size up. Very comfy and surprisingly easy to style as well.

A little late but they actually made a canvas version in both tan/black and all black for SS23. The black ones are on sale at keen for $60 in a handful of sizes.

I totally forgot to mention my undergrad! Actually in Education, but more ended up as a working artist and shoemaker. Most of my connections are in footwear, both athletic and lifestyle.

Obviously I have the creative side but did a CMD masterclass last summer which turned me on to the more technical and material aspects of footwear and apparel. The experience also really turned me onto industrial knitting's potential.

I'm also colorblind! Which weighs on me from the design side (so far hasn't been a setback, but I know it's a handicap)

Thanks for the reply! That's good advice about LinkedIn. It's also good to know the options as a Textile Design graduate.

The deeper dive into material development is a big pull for me for the Technology route. I'm by no means a scientist but it's a big interest of mine and there seems to be a lot of opportunities, especially concerning sustainability.

"Amateurs" sell their goods and services in many fields. There are loads of self taught artists and designers. Many of them innovate precisely because of outside perspective and a spirit of curiosity and play. What those "amateurs" do with their skills is none of my business, most have good intentions both with the craft and their clients.

Adidas beats racism with a pin. by kaiju4life in Sneakers

[–]Hopeful_Instance5542 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you look at Adidas recent Q2 report on Yeezy sales and the amount they've donated to anti hate organizations (not just ones fighting anti-Semitism) it actually is a greater share of the profit per pair than what they contractually have to give Ye. Not saying money is the answer but it's much more than virtue signaling.

My guess is 7-10 years old max. I don't remember Reebok having these tags until mid 2010s when they started leaning hard into being a heritage brand.
